Chapter 8

The dress arrives at six. It's not the green velvet from last night. This one is black, sleeveless, cut low at the front — a deep V that stops just above her navel, held together by a single silk tie at her sternum. The back is open to her waist. The fabric is charmeuse, liquid and cool, draping over her body like water.

Serena stands in front of the mirror and ties the silk knot. The dress fits perfectly. It's designed to expose everything — the line of her collarbone, the curve of her breasts, the flat plane of her stomach, the surgical scar beneath her left rib that she's hidden for eight years.

She touches the scar. A thin white line, the memory of shrapnel in Fallujah. She's never worn a dress that showed it.

There's no choice. The dress is the only option in the wardrobe.

She steps into the heels — black, four inches, straps that wrap around her ankles. She brushes her hair down, lets it fall across her shoulders. She applies the red lipstick, blotting, pressing her lips together.

She looks at herself in the mirror and sees a woman being prepared for display.

Marta collects her at ten to seven. She leads her through the house, not to the dining room but to a part of the estate Serena hasn't seen — a wing at the back, through a set of double doors, into a room that opens into a formal salon.

The salon is large, high-ceilinged, lit by crystal chandeliers. A dozen people stand in clusters — men in dark suits, women in gowns, glasses of champagne catching the light. A fire crackles in a marble fireplace at the far end.

Madame Korvin stands near the fire, talking to a heavyset man with a gray beard. She's in navy blue tonight, a gown that leaves her shoulders bare, the pearls at her throat catching the firelight.

She looks up as Serena enters. Her eyes travel the length of her — the dress, the heels, the exposed scar — and she smiles.

"Gentlemen," she says, her voice carrying. "May I present my newest acquisition."

The room turns.

Twelve faces. Twelve sets of eyes. They travel the same path Madame Korvin's did — from Serena's face to her collarbone to her breasts to her stomach to her scar to her thighs to her ankles and back up again.

Serena stands in the doorway. She holds herself still. She does not cross her arms. She does not look away.

The heavyset man approaches. He's taller up close, his beard streaked with gray, his eyes small and bright. He stops a foot from her and studies her the way a man studies a horse at auction.

"Turn," he says.

Serena looks at Madame Korvin. Madame Korvin nods.

Serena turns. Slow. A full circle. The dress moves with her, the silk catching the light, the open back exposing the line of her spine, the curve of her waist, the dip at the base of her back.

She faces him again.

"Beautiful," he says. "But thin. Does she eat?"

"She eats," Madame Korvin says. "She's built for function, not decoration. You can see it in the muscle definition." She steps closer, her hand finding Serena's wrist, lifting her arm. "Feel."

The heavyset man reaches out. His fingers press into Serena's forearm, testing the muscle beneath the skin. His hands are warm, damp. He holds her arm longer than necessary.

"She's been trained," he says.

"She has."

He releases her arm. His eyes travel down to the scar beneath her ribs. "And this?"

"A souvenir from a previous employer." Madame Korvin's voice is smooth, unhurried. "She's not a doll. She's a tool. You don't buy a tool for its appearance — you buy it for what it can do."

The heavyset man grunts. He steps back, reaches for his champagne, and turns away.

Serena stands in the center of the room, her arm still tingling from his touch, her scar exposed, her body discussed like a piece of equipment.

The conversation resumes around her. The guests return to their champagne, their networking, their deals.

Serena doesn't move. She stands where she was left, a display piece in a salon of predators, and waits for the next instruction.

---

An hour passes. Serena is moved through the room on Madame Korvin's arm, introduced to a dozen men and two women, each introduction the same: My newest acquisition. She's from America. Former military, if you can believe it. Turn for them, Elise.

She turns. She stands. She is touched — a hand on her arm, a finger tracing the edge of her scar, a palm pressed flat against her lower back where the dress ends and skin begins. She does not flinch. She does not pull away. She counts her breaths and her exits and her enemies.

The heavyset man — his name is Gregor, she learns, he runs shipping routes through the Black Sea — approaches her again near the end of the evening. He's drunker now, his cheeks flushed, his eyes less focused.

"You're quiet," he says.

"I don't have anything to say."

"That's wise." He steps closer. His hand finds her hip, rests there. "Most of the women here talk too much. They try to charm me. You don't."

"I'm not here to charm you."

"No." His hand slides to her waist, his thumb pressing into the space between her ribs. "You're here to be looked at. To be touched. To be evaluated." His thumb traces the edge of her scar through the silk. "Do you know what I think?"

"What do you think?"

"I think you hate this." His breath is warm, sour with wine. "I think every second of this is a humiliation you're enduring for reasons I don't understand. And I think that's what makes you interesting."

He holds her gaze. Serena holds his.

"Madame Korvin has a talent for finding women who are broken in interesting ways," he says. "You're her best find in years." He releases her hip, steps back. "Enjoy your stay, Elise. I suspect it will be longer than you expect."

He walks away.

Serena stands alone in the center of the salon, the chandeliers blazing above her, the guests circulating around her, the heat of his hand still burning through the silk at her waist.

She doesn't move for a long time.

---

The guests begin to leave at eleven. Madame Korvin stands at the door, receiving their goodbyes, her smile fixed and warm. When the last car has pulled away, she turns to Serena.

"You did well tonight."

Serena doesn't answer.

Madame Korvin crosses the room. She stops in front of Serena, close enough that Serena can smell her perfume — sandalwood and jasmine, the same as this afternoon.

"I know it was difficult," she says. "Being touched. Being discussed. Being treated as property." Her voice drops, softer now. "But you survived it. And you'll survive it again. That's what you do, isn't it? You survive."

Serena's throat is tight. She doesn't trust her voice.

Madame Korvin's hand comes up to her face, palm cool against Serena's cheek. "You're not property, Elise. You're a guest. But this is the price of admission." Her thumb traces Serena's cheekbone. "Tonight, you were seen. Tomorrow, you'll begin to be known."

She withdraws her hand. "Marta will take you to your room. Rest. Tomorrow will be different."

Serena follows Marta through the dark corridors, the heels clicking on the marble, the house settling into silence around her. She reaches her room. The door clicks shut behind her. No lock to turn — the key sits on the writing desk, as before.

She stands in the center of the room, alone, the black dress still clinging to her body, the ghost of Gregor's hand still burning at her waist.

She doesn't undress. She doesn't lie down.

She crosses to the window and looks out at the dark lake, the silver moonlight, the iron fence that borders the property, and she lets herself feel the weight of what she endured tonight — the turning, the touching, the discussion of her body as if she weren't in the room.

Her hands are shaking.

She doesn't know if it's rage or shame.

She doesn't know if there's a difference anymore.

---

She doesn't sleep. The hours pass in the dark, the moon tracking across the window, her body still strung tight from the salon. She lies on the bed in the black dress, the silk twisted around her thighs, her eyes open, counting the cracks in the ceiling plaster.

Just after three in the morning, she hears footsteps in the corridor.

Heavy. Deliberate. Not Marta's light tread.

She sits up. The footsteps stop outside her door. The lock clicks — not a key, but someone working it from the other side with the same trick she used on her first night. The door swings open.

Irina Volkov stands in the threshold.

The light from the corridor catches her silver-streaked hair, her pale gray eyes, the high collar of her black tactical suit. She's come from the island. She's followed her here.

"Get up," Irina says.

Serena doesn't move. "What are you doing here?"

"Madame Korvin requested my services for your evaluation." Irina steps into the room, closing the door behind her. "You lied to Petrov. You lied to Madame. You think we don't know, but we know everything." She stops at the foot of the bed. "Get. Up."

Serena stands. Her bare feet on the cold floor. The black dress twisted around her body. She faces Irina, her chin lifted, her hands loose at her sides.

"You think you can fight me," Irina says. "You're trained. You're fast. But you've been performing for days — playing the compliant acquisition, swallowing your rage. You're exhausted. You're hungry. You haven't slept." She tilts her head. "I'm going to show you exactly how fragile your training is when the body has nothing left."

She strips off her jacket. Underneath, she wears a thin black tank top, her shoulders bare, the muscles in her arms visible in the low light.

"Fight me," she says. "Or I'll take it out of your hide either way."

Serena moves first.

She's fast — faster than Irina expects, a strike aimed at the throat that Irina deflects with a forearm, the impact jarring up Serena's wrist. She follows with a knee, a pivot, an elbow aimed at Irina's temple. Irina takes the elbow on her shoulder, grunts, and catches Serena's arm in a lock that twists her off balance.

Serena hits the floor. Hard. The air punches out of her lungs.

Irina doesn't give her time to recover. She's on top of her, her weight pinning Serena's hips, her hand fisting in the silk of the dress at Serena's throat.

"You're good," Irina says, her voice low, almost admiring. "But you're not good enough."

She yanks. The silk tears. The dress splits from collar to hem, exposing Serena's chest, her stomach, the scar beneath her ribs. The cold air hits her skin.

Irina stares down at her. "You were a SEAL, yes? All that training. All that conditioning. And here you are, on your back, in a torn dress, about to learn what happens to women who think they can outplay Viktor Petrov."

Her hand comes down on Serena's bare thigh. Hard. The crack of palm on skin echoes in the room.

Serena gasps. She doesn't cry out — she bites it back, her teeth clenching, her body jerking under the impact.

Irina hits her again. The other thigh. The same sharp crack, the same bloom of heat.

"You will count," Irina says.

"No."

Irina's hand comes down again. And again. Four. Five. Six strikes, each harder than the last, each landing on a different patch of skin — thighs, hips, the soft curve where ass meets thigh. The room fills with the sound of wet slaps and Serena's ragged breathing.

By the eighth strike, Serena's thighs are burning. By the tenth, she can feel the welts rising.

Irina pauses. Her hand rests on Serena's hip, her fingers tracing the edge of the torn silk where it still covers Serena's cunt. "Still won't count?"

Serena shakes her head, her breath coming in short, sharp gasps.

"Good," Irina says. "I prefer them stubborn."

She pushes the torn silk aside. Her fingers are cold, clinical, as they press between Serena's thighs, finding her slick despite everything — the body's betrayal, the way arousal rises with adrenaline and pain and the raw shock of being taken.

"Look at that," Irina murmurs. "You're wet. All that fighting, all that resistance, and your body knows exactly what it needs."

Her fingers slide inside.

Serena's back arches. A sound escapes her — not quite a cry, not quite a moan, something caught between pain and the shock of being filled without permission. Irina's fingers are thick, calloused, moving with a rhythm that feels practiced, deliberate. She knows exactly what she's doing.

Irina's fingers pump, slow and merciless. Her thumb presses against Serena's clit, circles once, twice, while her free hand holds Serena's hip to the floor, pinning her through the aftershocks of the spanking.

"You like this," Irina says. "You hate it and you like it. I can feel you getting wetter. Your body doesn't lie, even when your mouth does."

Serena shakes her head, her hands fisting in the torn silk beneath her, her breath catching on every thrust of Irina's fingers.

Irina's fingers curl inside her, pressing upward, finding the spot that makes Serena's vision blur. "Tell me you want to come."

"No."

Irina's thumb presses harder. Her fingers move faster, three now, stretching her, filling her. The pleasure builds, unwanted, inexorable, a wave rising from somewhere Serena can't contain. Her hips start to move, betraying her, grinding against Irina's hand.

"Tell me you want to come, and I'll let you."

Serena's hips buck. Her breath is ragged, her teeth clamped so hard her jaw aches. She shakes her head again, but her body is already clenching around Irina's fingers, the orgasm tearing through her whether she wants it or not.

She cries out. A raw, broken sound. Her back arches off the floor, her thighs clamping around Irina's hand, her cunt pulsing around the fingers inside her, the wet sound of it filling the room.

Irina waits. Lets her ride it out. Then she pulls her fingers free, slow, deliberate, and wipes them on the torn silk of Serena's dress.

"Good girl," she says. She stands. Looks down at Serena, sprawled on the floor, the dress shredded beneath her, her thighs slick and red from the spanking, her breath still ragged, her face wet with tears she didn't realize she was crying. "Madame wants you broken, not destroyed. She'll be pleased with tonight's progress."

She walks to the door. Pauses. Looks back.

"Tomorrow, we do it again. And the day after that. And every day until you stop fighting and start accepting."

She leaves. The door clicks shut. The lock engages.

Serena lies on the floor in the dark, the torn silk beneath her, the cold air on her skin, the evidence of her own arousal cooling on her thighs, the welts from the spanking throbbing in time with her heartbeat.

She doesn't move for a long time.

When she finally stands, her legs are shaking. She crosses to the bathroom, steps into the shower, and turns the water as hot as she can stand it. The spray hits the welts on her thighs and she hisses, the heat and the pain blending into something she can't separate.

She stands under the stream and doesn't cry.

But it's close.

She presses her forehead against the cold tile and lets the water run over her, washing away the evidence of what happened, but not the memory. The memory is etched into her now — the crack of Irina's palm on her skin, the stretch of fingers inside her, the orgasm that tore out of her throat like a confession.

Tomorrow, we do it again.

She turns off the water. She stands dripping in the dark bathroom, naked, exposed, the welts rising on her thighs, and she makes a decision.

She's not going to break.

She's going to survive this. She's going to learn the layout of this house, the schedules of its guards, the weaknesses of its women. She's going to find a way to signal Marcus. She's going to finish this op, and when she does, she's going to burn this place to the ground.

But first, she has to survive tomorrow.

She wraps herself in a towel, crosses to the bed, and lies down on her stomach, the welts too tender to bear any pressure.

She closes her eyes.

She doesn't sleep.

But she plans.
