Chapter 3 of 18
The driver's grip was an iron shackle on David's bicep, guiding him not by force but by the unshakable authority of a man who knew his territory. They moved through the grand, echoing halls of the priory, his bare feet silent on the ancient flagstones while the driver's polished shoes clicked with a rhythmic, final sound. He was a parcel being delivered. They descended a short flight of stone steps into a cavernous kitchen, a place of industrial-sized stainless steel and simmering pots. The air was thick with the scent of baking bread and something else, acrid and chemical. Two other maids in identical uniforms scurried to the far wall, eyes averted, pressing themselves flat against the stone as they passed. No one looked. No one spoke.
At the far end of the kitchen, the driver pushed open a heavy, soundproofed door and led David down another, narrower flight of stairs. The air grew colder and damper. The room at the bottom was a shock of clinical white. Floor, walls, and ceiling were covered in stark, gleaming tiles, the grout a pristine, antiseptic gray. In the center of the room, a stainless-steel drain was set into the floor, and a heavy steel chain hung directly above it from a pulley system on the ceiling.
The driver uncuffed David's hands, only to immediately recuff them to a short chain. He then used a hooked pole to lower the main chain and secured David's cuffs to it. With a grinding of gears, he winched the chain upward, pulling David's arms high above his head until he stood on the balls of his feet, stretched taut and vulnerable. His naked body was a pale canvas against the sterile white.
The driver's work was done. He turned, but instead of leaving, he looked up and saw Isabella, who stood waiting by a cart of implements. In two swift strides, he was on her, grabbing her arm and pulling her close. He mashed his lips against hers in a rough, possessive kiss born of desperation and frustration.
For a moment, she was frozen. Then, with surprising strength, she shoved him hard against the tiled wall. "No!" she hissed, her voice a venomous whisper. "Don't you dare!"
"Isabella, for God's sake," the driver, Roger, growled, his face a mask of angry need.
"Her ladyship is watching," she spat, jabbing a finger toward a small, dark dome in the ceiling—a camera. "You know the rules. You are not allowed to talk to me, let alone touch me, unless she says so. It doesn't matter if we are husband and wife. We belong to her now. Both of us. All of us. You'll get us both punished!"
A muscle twitched in Roger's jaw. He stared at her, a storm of conflicting emotions warring in his eyes, yet the threat in her words was absolute. Defeated, he straightened his jacket, shot one last longing look at his wife, then turned on his heel and slammed the heavy door behind him. The sound echoed in the tiled room like the clang of a prison cell.
Isabella stood for a moment, her chest heaving. Then her professional mask slid back into place. She picked up a high-pressure hose from a wall fitting. Without warning, she turned it on David.
The water was ice-cold, a physical assault that stole his breath. The jet stung his skin, blasting away the grime from his journey and the last of his dignity. He gasped and shivered, turning his face away as the water sluiced over him, running down his body and disappearing into the drain below.
When she was satisfied, she shut off the water and wheeled the cart closer. On it were bowls, towels, and an array of sharp-looking razors and creams. She lathered his chest and legs, her touch efficient and impersonal as she scraped away his body hair. But when she moved lower, to his genitals, her touch changed. It grew softer, more deliberate. She knelt, her face inches from him, and with expert, careful strokes, she began to shave his testicles. The intimate contact, the warmth of her hands in the cold room, was a violation so profound it was almost worse than the beating. He felt a betraying stir in his loins, a shameful, involuntary response to the stimulus.
A slow, sadistic smile touched Isabella's lips. She saw his erection and paused in her work, her gloved hand lingering. "Oh," she whispered, a sound of mock surprise. She began to stroke him, her touch practiced and knowing. Her eyes were unfocused, a faraway look in them as she played with him, her movements absent, almost mechanical. She was missing her husband's touch, using David's body as a poor substitute, a brief, stolen moment of intimacy in a world that forbade it. The humiliation burned through David, a fire hotter than the freezing water. He was not a person to her; he was a tool for her fleeting comfort.
After a minute, she seemed to remember herself. She let go, her expression hardening again. She set a simple, backless wooden chair directly behind him. With a loud clank, she released the winch, lowering the chain just enough for him to slump into the chair, his arms still pulled taut above his head. His head bowed in defeat.
She picked up a set of electric clippers. David flinched as the buzzing clippers touched the nape of his neck. He watched in the polished surface of a nearby cabinet as dark tufts of his hair fell onto the white tiles. She removed the guard and ran the clippers over his scalp, leaving a shadow of stubble. Then, with a warm towel and shaving foam, she lathered his head and, using a straight razor, scraped it clean. He was bald now. Smooth. Sterile. Just as she had been instructed. He was no longer David Carter. He was a blank slate.
Deep in the bowels of the priory, in another, colder room, a different maid, a young woman named Mary, approached a figure chained to the stone wall. This was Roger's prison. The chains held his limbs outstretched, and a heavy, custom-fitted metal cage encased his head, forcing it upright. A padlock hung from the front.
Mary carried a bowl of steaming porridge. It was thick and gray, flecked with an alarming amount of red pepper. "Extra spicy," as ordered. She unlocked the cage with a small key, the sound echoing through the damp cellar. The front of the cage swung open.
"Breakfast, Sir," she said, her voice flat.
His eyes, visible through the bars, were desperate. He tried to turn his head away from the bowl, from the inevitable burn, but the cage held him fast. He could move only his eyes.
"Come now," Mary chided, her patience worn thin. "Don't make this difficult." Pinching his nose shut, she waited. When he gasped for air, she shoved a spoonful of scalding, spicy porridge into his mouth. He choked, eyes watering, but he had no choice but to swallow. She fed him quickly, methodically, spoon by agonizing spoon, her face a mask of indifference. When the bowl was empty, she grabbed a rough cloth and wiped his face, clearing away the mess and his tears.
She swung the cage door shut, the lock clicking with a definitive, final sound. She gave a perfunctory curtsey to the chained, caged man, then turned and left, her footsteps echoing away until Roger was alone again in the chilling dark, the fire in his mouth a dull reminder of his place.
