Chapter 1 of 3
Charlie paced the small, cluttered living room, her hands gesturing wildly as she replayed the final argument. "I'm telling you, Chloe, I am completely done. No more second chances, no more excuses. Boys are officially cancelled."
Chloe sat cross-legged on the sofa, watching her friend spin in circles like a frayed wire. At nineteen, Charlie possessed a frantic energy that could power a small town, especially when running on adrenaline and indignation.
"Okay, Charlie, calm down," Chloe said, patting the cushion beside her.
Charlie stopped pacing, let out a long, shuddering breath, and collapsed onto the couch. Chloe wrapped her arms around her in a firm, grounding embrace, pulling her close.
As they pulled back, Chloe lingered for a second, her nose catching a familiar, comforting trace in the air. She leaned in closer, taking a gentle sniff of Charlie's neck.
"Mm, you smell nice," Chloe murmured, a slight smile touching her lips. "What is that?"
Charlie blinked, momentarily distracted from her heartbreak, and touched her collarbone. "Oh—um, vanilla and sandalwood. I think. Or maybe the amber spray you left in my bag last week."
"Well, keep wearing it," Chloe said softly, her eyes lingering just a moment too long before shifting back to the safe territory of outrage. "Now. About this boyfriend of yours..."
The hours dissolved into the steady hum of conversation, the kind that only two lifelong friends could sustain, drifting effortlessly from angry post-mortems of the breakup to old memories and shared silences.
Eventually, Charlie’s erratic energy burned out, leaving her curled up horizontally on the sofa with her head resting comfortably in Chloe’s lap. Chloe’s fingers moved rhythmically, gently stroking Charlie’s hair in a soothing, familiar gesture that instantly bridged the gap between their chaotic present and the safety of their early teenage years.
Charlie closed her eyes, letting out a soft sigh as the tension finally began to leave her shoulders. But the quiet didn't last. The analytical gear in Charlie's mind clicked back on, fuelled by a mix of exhaustion and blunt honesty.
"Look, Chloe," Charlie murmured, staring up at the ceiling. "You have never actually had a boyfriend, so I don't really think you would understand. I mean... you're a, you know."
Charlie trailed off, her tongue catching on the words as it always did.
It was a familiar hesitation, one that had lingered between them ever since Chloe came out at sixteen. While Chloe had long since grown comfortable in her own skin, Charlie still occasionally stumbled over the boundaries of a conversation she never quite knew how to navigate without feeling clumsy.
The hand in Charlie’s hair paused for a fraction of a second before resuming its slow, rhythmic stroke.
"I might not know what it's like to date a cheating jerk," Chloe said quietly, her voice a soft hum against the quiet of the room, "but I know what it's like to care about you, Charlie."
That was always the dangerous part. The problem wasn't just that Charlie loved Chloe; it was how she loved her, and how terrifyingly safe it felt to sink into that affection. It was the warmth of those old play-fights in the back garden, the breathless wrestling matches that always ended in helpless laughter, tangled limbs, and merciless tickling until one of them begged for mercy.
Charlie swallowed hard, staring at the ceiling. She had denied it a thousand times—to her friends, to the mirror, and most fiercely to herself. She didn't have feelings for Chloe. They were just best friends. Sisters, almost.
Except sisters didn't replay that one hazy Tuesday night in their minds over and over again. They hadn't kissed—not a sloppy, desperate teenage French kiss, but something soft, fleeting, and achingly intimate in the quiet dark of Chloe's bedroom. A secret shared between breaths.
Charlie’s chest tightened, a familiar knot of guilt twisting inside her. She came from a strict church family where the blueprint of life was carved in stone: boys, courtship, marriage, and children. Anything else was labelled a sin, whispered about in hushed tones after Sunday service, and strictly forbidden. To her parents, it was boys all the way, no exceptions, no deviations.
"You're quiet," Chloe whispered, looking down at her. Her gaze was steady, carrying an unspoken understanding that saw right through Charlie's tangled thoughts.
"Just thinking," Charlie murmured, closing her eyes tighter as a stray tear escaped, tracking warm down her temple. "My family... you know how they are, Chloe. If they could see us right now..."
"They can't see us," Chloe said softly, her thumb gently brushing the tear away from Charlie's cheek with an unbearable tenderness. "It's just us."
"Why can't I just meet a male version of you, Chloe?" Charlie mumbled into the cushions; her voice laced with a mixture of exhaustion and playful frustration. "Someone who actually gets it, doesn't lie, and doesn't treat me like an option.
Chloe let out a soft, knowing laugh. "Good luck finding a guy with my exact blend of charm and patience."
Instead of answering with words, Chloe shifted her weight. Before Charlie could process the movement, Chloe hooked her fingers under the hem of Charlie's crop top, lifting it up past her tummy in one swift, practiced motion.
Charlie gasped, a startled shriek turning into a high-pitched squeal as Chloe leaned down and blew a loud, vibrating raspberry right onto her bare belly button.
"Hey—stop! No, wait—!" Charlie laughed wildly, the heavy thoughts of cheating boyfriends and strict church rules instantly evaporating under the sudden assault.
Chloe blew another long raspberry, her warm breath making Charlie wriggle and twist against the cushions. Instinctively, Charlie pulled her knees up tight to her chest, curling her bare toes as helpless, bubbling laughter ripped out of her.
"Chloe, I swear to god—if you do it again—" Charlie wheezed, trying to swat her hands away while simultaneously curling into a tighter ball to protect her ribs, a helpless smile breaking completely across her face.
"Oh really?" Chloe challenged with a grin.
Another wet, sloppy raspberry hit Charlie’s exposed belly button right on target.
"Ahhhh, right, you are dead!" Charlie shrieked, the playful panic overriding everything else.
In a sudden surge of adrenaline, Charlie lunged forward, wrapping her arms securely around Chloe’s waist. With a clumsy, laughing heave, they both tumbled off the sofa and rolled onto the soft rug of the lounge floor. Charlie landed squarely on top, her weight pinning Chloe’s wrists to the floor above her head.
For a second, the breathless laughter hung in the air between them. The playfighting had stopped as quickly as it started, replaced by the heavy, sudden shift of proximity.
Charlie looked down, gazing directly into Chloe’s face. Up close, Chloe’s eyes were bright, framed by loose strands of hair from the tumble, completely unbothered by being pinned.
"You know you want to," Chloe murmured, her voice dropping to a low, steady hum as she looked back up at Charlie without a shred of fear. "I have always been here for you, Charlie. You know that."
Charlie hesitated, the weight of a lifetime of expectations hanging by a thread, before she lowered herself down. She met Chloe’s lips with a hesitant, trembling softness.
The moment their lips touched, the hesitation broke. Chloe’s hands slipped free from Charlie's grip, sliding up to wrap firmly around Charlie’s back, pulling her close in a fierce, sudden embrace. As they rolled together on the soft floor, tangled in a flurry of laughter and breathless sighs, the kiss deepened from cautious to undeniable
When they finally broke apart for air, Chloe shifted, kneeling up on the rug. Her chest rose and fell, her eyes dark and searching as she looked down at Charlie, then glanced meaningfully toward the open door leading to the bedroom.
"So, you want to?" Chloe asked softly.
Charlie scrambled up onto her knees, her hair completely unspooled into a wild, messy bird's nest around her face. She looked at Chloe, terror and longing warring openly in her expression.
"I do," Charlie whispered, her voice shaking slightly, "but... that means we can’t go back, Chloe. Once we cross this line, everything changes."
Chloe reached out, her fingers gently cupping Charlie’s flushed cheek, grounding her against the panic.
"How about we call it an experiment?" Chloe offered, a reassuring smile touching her lips. "If you like it, we can try other things. If you don't... we stop, and we are still best friends. No pressure. Deal?"
"Ok."
Charlie stood up, grabbed Chloe’s hand, and pulled her down the short hallway into the bedroom, wasting no time before throwing herself backward onto the mattress. She bounced slightly, looking up at Chloe with a mix of nervous anticipation and a defiant spark in her eyes, brushing a wild strand of hair out of her face.
"I'm your little experiment, Chloe," Charlie said, a teasing lilt to her breath masking the tremor in her voice. "How shall we proceed? This is your domain, not mine."
Chloe followed, stepping up to the edge of the bed with a soft, confident smile. She looked down at Charlie—tangled hair, flushed cheeks, and all—and climbed up beside her, leaning in close.
"Well, Professor," Chloe murmured, her hand tracing a slow, deliberate line up Charlie's arm, "Step one is entirely up to you."
Charlie didn't hesitate. With a swift, decisive motion, she slipped out of her remaining clothes, shedding the last remnants of her confusion and hesitation. She lay back against the mattress, completely exposed and offering herself up to the moment with a daring, vulnerable sort of abandon.
Chloe paused, her breath catching as she took in the sight of her. Charlie’s skin looked impossibly smooth and soft, completely bare, radiating a warm, nervous heat under the bedroom light.
"First," Chloe murmured, her voice dropping to a low, deliberate purr, "I need to inspect you inch by inch."
Chloe moved to the foot of the bed, her fingers brushing over Charlie’s ankles. Reaching into the drawer of the bedside table, she pulled out a pair of smooth silk scarves. With practiced care, she looped the fabric gently but securely around Charlie's ankles, tying them off to the sturdy wooden bed posts. Moving upward, she repeated the motion with Charlie's wrists, securing them wide against the headboard.
Charlie let her head fall back against the pillows, a long, shivering sigh escaping her lips. For the first time in years, she felt completely weightless untethered from the expectations of her family, the sting of her ex-boyfriend's betrayal, and every rule she had ever been forced to follow. She was entirely in Chloe's hands, and it felt like heaven.
A girl knows what another girl likes, Charlie thought to herself, a hazy, delirious warmth spreading through her chest as Chloe leaned over her with a knowing smile. And Chloe, who knew her better than anyone in the world, was ready to prove it.
