Chapter 9 of 22
The ring of the burner phone was a shard of glass in the quiet of her living room. Katherine flinched, the sound a physical assault. She had been sitting in a stupor, her mind replaying the horrors on the cracked screen of the phone. Three rings. The threat was real. She scrambled to answer, her movements clumsy.
"Pentagon Car Park, level four. Blue BMW, you have twenty minutes," Jamie's voice said before the line went dead. No greeting, no preamble. Just an order.
Katherine moved on autopilot, her body acting while her mind remained a block of ice. The drive was a blur of rain-slicked streets and headlights. She found the blue BMW parked in a dim corner of the concrete behemoth, its engine idling. Katherine pulled her own A6 in next to it and killed the engine, the sudden silence deafening. She took a breath and got out.
Jamie was in the driver's seat, one hand on the wheel, the other tapping a rhythm on the door. She didn't look at Katherine as she slid into the passenger seat. "Got a file on your desk. Eyes Only. Labeled 'Project Nightingale.' You're going to lose it," Jamie said, her gaze fixed on the damp concrete wall in front of them. "And you're going to start whispering in your partner's ear about a new lead. A Russian syndicate operating out of the docks. Make it convincing. You're good at that, aren't you, little piggy?"
Katherine stared out the windshield, her jaw tight. "And if I don't?"
"Then Daddy dearest gets a very special delivery from one of his constituents. Every bloody clip, all sixty-seven gigs of it, sent to every news outlet in the UK," Jamie said, finally turning to her, a predator's smile on her face. "He won't just be ruined. He'll be a national joke. A footnote in a history of depravity. Now, get out."
Heaving a sigh of pure defeat, Katherine reached for the handle, ready to escape back into the rain. But as she did, Jamie's hand shot out, tangling violently in her hair and yanking her head back. Katherine cried out in pain, her body jerking back into the seat.
Jamie's face was inches from hers, her breath warm against Katherine's ear. "Now, now, little piggy," she whispered, her voice a dangerously soft hiss. "You call me Mistress." She pulled her hair again, harder, a sharp, punitive tug that made Katherine wince. "Is that fucking understood?"
"Y-yes, Mistress," Katherine bleated, the words tasting like battery acid in her mouth.
"Good little sow," Jamie released her hair with a shove and threw a thick manila envelope onto her lap. "Now look in the envelope."
Katherine fumbled with the clasp, her hands trembling. Inside was a stack of crisp, used twenty-pound notes. It had to be thousands. "What the fuck is this for?" Katherine almost shouted, her anger momentarily overriding her fear.
"You work for us now; it's only fair you get paid," Jamie said with a dismissive shrug. "Now get out of my car and get to it."
Shaken, Katherine slipped the envelope into her coat pocket. She opened the door, the cold night air rushing in. As soon as she slammed it shut, Jamie roared the engine and sped off, her taillights disappearing into the shadowy pillars of the car park.
Katherine got back into her own Audi, the smell of Jamie's perfume and leather clinging to her coat. She slammed her fist against the leather-bound steering wheel, a guttural scream tearing at her throat. They owned her. Her father. Her career. Her very soul. Before she could even process the contemptuous cash, the burner phone on her seat pinged. A message from an unknown number. It had a video file attached. With a sense of dread, she pressed play.
It was a fisheye view from inside Jamie's car. The camera was perfectly angled to capture both of them in the front seat. She watched herself get in the car and the tense conversation. She saw the violent hair pull, the whispered command. She saw herself take the envelope, saw her own lips form the words, "What the fuck is this for?" She saw Jamie's smirk as she drove away. They had recorded it all. The encounter, the money, the bribe were made to look like a dirty cop's clandestine payoff.
They had choreographed the whole fucking thing. Every move she made, every forced step she took, was just another part of their performance. Katherine felt herself being dragged down further and further, entangled in a web, and with every move this gang made, she sank deeper into a darkness she wasn't sure she could ever escape.
