Chapter 2 of 2

Hell is Freedom

A year later the halo was still there.

Lila woke with it. She felt it when she stood, when she walked to the bathroom, when she sat down to put her shoes on. The tight metal band shifted against the base of her clit with every step. The micro-spikes rubbed in small, constant strokes. Most days it kept her in a low, stubborn heat she could not fully ignore. She had learned to walk carefully. It never helped much.

Work was easier if she stayed on her feet in short stretches and sat with her knees together. Even then the ring made itself known. A long meeting left her wet and sore at the same time. She went to the restroom, locked the stall, and breathed through it until the worst of the pulse faded.

Showers were worse. Water hitting the metal sent a bright line of sensation up through her. She had stopped using the handheld spray below her waist. It was not worth the way her knees went weak against the tile.

At night she sometimes tried to finish herself. The orgasm always came. So did the pain. The spikes bit as she clenched. The orgasm did not come clean. Afterward she lay still and waited for her heartbeat to stop grinding the ring against her.

The Lexicon sat on the top shelf of her closet, closed and quiet.

She did not take it down. Not yet.

His name was Matt. They had been on three dates. He was fine. Kind, a little nervous, good with his hands.

In her bed he kissed down her stomach and knelt between her thighs. His mouth found her and he made a small, confused sound.

“Is that… metal?”

“Yes,” Lila said. “Leave it.”

He hesitated, then licked her anyway. His tongue dragged over the tight band and the swollen flesh it held. The spikes bit. Pain and pleasure hit her at the same time and a broken sound came out of her that did not belong in a normal bedroom.

Matt flinched. He pulled back, touching his mouth. A thin line of blood sat on his tongue.

“It cut me.”

He sat up. The look on his face was not anger. It was discomfort, the kind that meant he was already leaving in his head.

“I don’t think I can do this,” he said.

He got dressed. He was polite about it. He did not ask what the ring was for.

After the door closed Lila lay there with the halo still wet from his mouth and the spikes still working. The bed felt too quiet. The room felt too ordinary.

After Matt she stopped looking for ordinary.

She found the other rooms. Sex parties. Dungeons. People who did not flinch at metal. Bondage that left marks. Whips. Hands and implements that understood pain as part of the point. She let them have her. She asked for more when it was not enough.

It worked, in its way. The orgasms built and bit and fed what the halo had left in her. She came hard in those rooms, shaking, the spikes grinding with every clench, and for a few minutes her body believed it had found the thing it wanted.

Then the lights came up. The scene ended. Someone offered water. Someone asked if she was all right.

She was. That was the problem.

It was never the basement. It was never the machine. It was never the measured voice and the chains that did not ask if she wanted to stop. These people were playing at intensity. Her body remembered the real thing.

She went home.

The Lexicon sat in her lap.

Lila looked through it the way she had on other nights. The last page waited. She already knew the texture of it. She had known for months.

If she finished it, would Los come back?

The thought should have been enough to make her put the thing down. She had escaped that basement. She had been left on the concrete, marked and wrecked, and she had gotten up and kept living. Why the fuck would she call that back.

Her clit throbbed against the halo. The spikes answered with their small, familiar bite.

The world had been dull since that day. Food. Work. Other people’s hands. Even the rooms that tried to hurt her properly. All of it sat behind glass. The basement had been the only hour that felt like it had weight.

She looked at the last page.

Right or wrong did not feel like a useful question anymore.

She finished the book and spoke her desire.

“I miss that day.”

The air ripped open with a wet metallic sound. Chains uncoiled from the dark and Los stepped through.

Black leather. Old jagged blades at his waist. Bald head, skin pale white. Ritual cuts and scars across his face. Eyes an abyss of black. The large iron ring sat behind his skull, held there by spikes driven inward from the inside of the halo.

Lila’s body knew him before her mind finished the thought.

Fear hit first. Hard and clean. Every survival instinct screamed that this was the end, that she had opened the last door on purpose and there would be no basement floor to wake up on this time. Her mouth went dry. Her hands shook around the Lexicon.

Under that fear was the hunger.

It had been living in her for a year. In the ring. In the dull rooms. In every experience that had failed to match this. She felt it rise through the panic like heat through ice.

She did not run.

She held onto the hunger instead.

Los regarded her for a long moment. The quiet was only broken by the faint echo of screams behind him.

“You finished it yourself,” he said.

“Yes.”

A chain flicked out of the air and opened a thin line across her upper arm. The cut was shallow and precise. Surprise hit first. Then fear. Then the heat that always followed the halo’s bite. She sucked in a breath and did not step back.

“Why.”

Lila’s mouth was dry. Part of her was still standing in the year she had spent trying to live around the ring, telling herself she had escaped. That part wanted to say she had made a mistake.

The other part had finished the book on purpose.

“Nothing else was enough,” she said.

Another chain appeared at her hip, kissed a bright cut into her, and vanished. Pain flared. Lust followed it so fast she hated how clean the sequence was. Her clit throbbed against the old halo.

She thought, too late, that she could still drop the Lexicon. That she could still ask him to leave. The thought died as soon as it formed. She had finished the book. There was no version of this where she went back to dull rooms and careful walking.

“You were left whole,” Los said. “Most are not. And still you returned.”

“I know.”

“Do you.”

A third chain slashed across the top of her breast. She jerked. The sound that came out of her was not only pain. He watched that sound the way another man might watch a face.

“I spent a year trying to copy the feeling,” she said. “People. Rooms. Pain that was supposed to be the same. It wasn’t. I kept the ring. I kept the book. I knew what finishing it meant.”

Her pulse was high. Fear still sat in her gut, screaming that this was the end. Under it the wanting was louder. She had asked for this. There was no turning back, and the worst part was how little that changed the wanting.

Los inclined his head a fraction.

“Then we will finish what the first ring began.”

The chains came back for her clothes first.

They raked across her shirt and opened it in long, precise cuts. Fabric tore and fell. Her bra followed in bloody strips. The metal dragged over bare skin and left thin red tracks. Her pants went next, then what was under them, until she was standing in the ruined pieces with the old halo uncovered and already wet.

Then the hooks found her.

They punched into her shoulders, her sides, the meat of her thighs. The pain was immediate and familiar. This time the chains did not haul her off the ground. They hung loose from the wounds, heavy enough to drag, light enough that she could still move. Every shift made the metal tug in her skin. She had room to take it.

Los freed his cock. The Jacob’s ladder caught the low light in two rows. The Prince Albert sat dark through the head.

“You will not be held still,” he said. “Stillness is for the impure."

He turned her, put her how he wanted her, and pushed in.

The pierced head forced her open first. Then the bars dragged through her one after another as he sank to the hilt. He did not rush. The first stroke was slow enough that she felt every ring and bar. The second was the same. He set a pace that belonged to him and did not vary it.

Lila pushed back onto him.

“You shake,” he said.

“I know what this is.”

“No. You know what it was. This is the remainder.”

A thin chain flicked across her ribs, left a cut, and vanished. Surprise, fear, lust, in that order. She kept moving.

The original halo bit with every impact. She chased both of them. Her body finally had the source it had been starving for, and her body answered even while the fear under her ribs kept telling her there would be no waking up on the floor this time.

Thin chains dropped to her ankles.

Two tight bands locked on with soft clicks. Micro-spikes lined the inside. The next time she pushed back the rings ground in and a broken sound tore out of her.

“The first ring taught the center,” Los said. He did not slow. “These teach the rest.”

He took her wrists and forced her arms out to the sides. More bands closed around them. Another pair of clicks. The spikes found the thin skin over the veins. Now every stroke fed the old ring and the new ones at once. She could still move. Moving made it worse. She moved anyway.

“Why do you meet the stroke,” he asked.

Because copies had not been enough. Because Matt’s mouth had flinched. Because the dungeons had ended and left her empty. Because she had finished the book with her own hands.

“Because I asked for it,” she said.

He gave a quiet sound that was not quite approval.

“Then take it.”

He kept the same deep, measured rhythm. The ladder dragged. The Prince Albert kissed the end of her and withdrew. She was wet, shaking, hooked and marked and still pushing onto him, the slow burn building instead of breaking.

He did not stop fucking her.

One hand left her wrist. The loose chain took the weight of her arm and let it hang, hooked and marked, still free enough to move. His mouth closed over her left nipple.

The heat was sudden after so much metal. Wet. A slow pull that made her back arch into him. For a few seconds there was only that, the soft drag of his mouth while the ladder kept working her in the same unhurried rhythm.

Then the ring found her.

A tight band slid around the base of the nipple and locked with a small click while his mouth was still on her. Micro-spikes bit in. The pleasure did not leave. The pain opened underneath it like a second layer. She made a raw sound and pushed back onto him harder.

Los lifted his head.

“You leaned into it.” He said quietly. “That is new.”

He took the other nipple.

Same heat. Same pull. She knew what was coming and still leaned into his mouth. The second band closed. Another click. The spikes sank in. Now both peaks were ringed, and every thrust sent a bright, ugly line from her clit halo up through the new metal on her chest.

The new rings on her chest pulled in time with the rest. The loose hooks in her skin. Each movement fed all of them. The pressure was constant, a tortured circling that never quite peaked and never eased.

“You chased copies of this,” Los said. His pace did not change. “Do they compare.”

“No.”

“Say what does.”

She could barely get air. Fear still sat in her. So did the knowledge that she had asked for this.

“You,” she said. “This. The first day. All of it.”

A stray chain opened a thin cut along her stomach and vanished. She jerked on him and the nipple rings bit in answer.

He kept the same deep stroke. No hurry. No heat in his face. She was shaking apart around the thing she had spent a year trying to find again, and he used her like the work was simply being completed.

He never changed rhythm.

When he finished he was buried to the hilt. She felt him empty into her in slow pulses, the metal bars still pressed deep inside her. He did not make a sound. He did not speed up. He simply filled her and held there while she broke.

The orgasm she had been chasing since the basement tore through her. Every ring bit at once. She came apart on it sobbing, shaking, still pushing back onto him because stopping was not possible. This was the hour the other attempts had failed to give her.

Los withdrew. The piercings on his cock dragged one last time. He did not look altered. The work, for him, was simply complete.

A final chain lowered a dark, seamless collar. The inner surface was lined with the same micro-spikes as the rest. He took it from the chain and held it out to her.

“Hell does not take,” he said. “Hell receives. You must open the final door yourself, Lila.”

She stared at the collar. Her hands were shaking. Fear still sat in her, screaming that this was the last yes, the one that would not leave her on a floor to wake up human. Under it she was quiet and certain.

“The Lexicon exists to ask a question,” he said in that same calm, measured voice. “Say yes and be free.”

This time she knew what answering meant.

“Yes.”

She took the collar. She slid it around her own neck. The band closed with a soft metallic click and the spikes bit in a ring around her throat.

She locked herself to Hell.

Later…

The corridor was not a corridor in any human sense. The walls were almost geometry, almost flesh. Distance did not behave.

Long black hair framed a face that had gone pale, pure white. She wore tight red leather. The hook wounds in her shoulders, sides, and thighs had never closed, thin trails of blood running from each one. The original chains remained in them, and more had been added, so many that they hung and dragged behind her like a trailing dress of metal. Nothing held the other ends. They simply followed. Each step tugged the hooks in her flesh and set the whole wake of chain moving.

The rings worked as she walked. Ankles. Wrists. Nipples. The old halo at her clit. The collar at her throat. They shifted in small, constant increments and drew blood as they moved. Pain and pleasure arrived together until they were no longer separate things. The promise of the first ring had been kept. Her body had been rewritten around that truth.

She still had the memories. The basement. Matt. The dungeons. The year of careful walking. They sat in her like facts, not wounds. The feelings attached to them had thinned. What remained was a quiet happiness, the kind that came from finally standing at the center of the thing she had been starving for.

She was less. She was more. She did not miss the difference.

A door waited. She opened it.

Inside was a quivering mess of a human. Vera. What was left of her. Eyes too wide. Body marked by a year of Hell and none of the understanding.

Lila looked at her stepmother and felt very little.

“Hello, stepmother,” she said. “It hurt at first. It hurts now. But I understand now what the hurt was for.”

She left the door open long enough for that to land. Then she closed it.

Whatever came after belonged to her now.
