The Gathering Storm - A Group XS Story

"You wanted to see me, Judge Kellerman?"

"Yes, Lynne, please come in. Have a seat."

Lynne walked into the judge's richly furnished courtroom chambers and went to the chair in front of his desk. If she'd known she'd have been meeting with Judge Kellerman today she certainly would have dressed more modestly. The lascivious judge eyed her chest hungrily as she bent down into the chair. She tried to adjust her skirt as far down her legs as she could.

"What can I do for you, sir?" Lynne asked.

"The other judges and I have noticed the excellent work that you've been doing lately and we wanted to commend you for it," Judge Kellerman explained.

"Thank you, sir."

"As it happens, I had scheduled a little getaway for my wife and myself to the Caribbean - an absolutely lovely little resort - but unfortunately I have been assigned an important trial and will not be able to go. Since the tickets are not refundable and would be going to waste I thought I would show my appreciation for all your hard work by giving them to you!"

Lynne was taken aback. This was certainly very generous, but there was really only one person she wanted to spend time with on a tropical island, her girlfriend, Catherine. Their relationship had been kept secret for fear of their torrid lesbian romance affecting how people would see them at work - Lynne, a courtroom reporter, and Catherine, an up and coming public defender. Unfortunately, she knew (and so did the judge) that Catherine was totally swamped with work right now. There was no way she could dart off to paradise with her for a few days.

"Um, I don't know," Lynne hesitated.

"It's all expenses paid. I've already approved your time off for the trip. There's even a limo that will drive you to the airport. What have you got to lose? Don't you have some strapping young lad to take you?" He knew full well about Lynne and Catherine's relationship from the Group XS surveillance of their shared apartment, but wanted to needle her about it anyway.

"Well, not exactly," Lynne replied.

"What about a friend or a sibling? I've heard you make mention of a younger sister. Bring her along!"

That actually wasn't a bad idea, Lynne thought. Her sister, Charlotte, was on a break from fashion school and was between jobs while she worked on her portfolio.

"Alright. Thank you, Judge Kellerman. This is so unexpected and generous. I really appreciate it. I don't know how I'll make this up to you!"

Judge Kellerman slid the tickets across his desk. "I'm sure you'll find a way," he smiled. "Get ready for the trip of a lifetime!"
