Chapter 10

The next morning, the heavy steel door screeched open, and Tom descended into the cellar. He moved with a brisk, purposeful energy, his presence filling the damp space with an immediate sense of dread. James, who had drifted in and out of a troubled, exhausted sleep on the concrete floor, flinched at the sound, his body tensing instinctively. Tom said nothing. He simply walked over, a heavy, jingling object in his hand.

He grabbed James by the hair, forcing his head up. James felt the cold, unyielding weight of a thick metal collar being placed around his neck. It was heavier than the first one, a brutal band of steel designed for permanence. With a loud, definitive click, Tom padlocked it shut, the sound echoing in the silence like the sealing of a tomb.

Next, Tom knelt and unlocked the chain from James's ankles. For a moment, James felt a flicker of hope, a foolish, desperate thought that he might be freed. But Tom simply grabbed the new collar, using it as a handle, and dragged him. James scrambled on his hands and knees, the rough concrete scraping his skin, as he was hauled from the cellar, up a flight of steep, wooden steps. He was pulled through a kitchen – a brief, dizzying glimpse of clean, white surfaces and a table laden with food that made his stomach cramp with hunger – and out into a small, concrete courtyard.

The morning sun was blinding. Tom dragged him to the far side of the courtyard, to a thick iron downpipe that ran from the roof to the ground. He took a length of chain from his pocket, wrapped it securely around the pipe, and padlocked the other end to the heavy ring at the front of James's collar. James was now chained, his hands still bound behind his back, his head held uncomfortably close to the cold brick of the house.

Tom then walked over to a reel on the wall and unwound a high-pressure hose. He aimed the nozzle at James and, without a word, without a warning, squeezed the trigger.

The blast of ice-cold water was a physical assault. It hit James's chest like a fist, knocking the breath from his lungs. He gasped, a strangled cry escaping his lips as the powerful jet scoured his body, the pressure stinging his skin. He danced and staggered as much as he could, a frantic, pathetic shuffle, his movements severely restricted by the collar and the chain. The water was in his eyes, his nose, his mouth, choking him. He tried to turn away, but the chain held him fast.

Tom continued his work in silence, a methodical, impersonal cleansing. He sprayed every inch of James's body, washing away the filth, the vomit, the piss, the dried blood. He hosed his hair down, forcing his head back with the pressure of the water. It was a brutal, violent baptism, stripping away not just the grime but the last vestiges of his humanity. He was an object being pressure-washed.

Finally, Tom stopped. He wound the hose back up with methodical precision, turned, and walked back into the house, leaving James chained to the pipe, shivering violently in the warm morning air.

James looked around, his teeth chattering. Surely somebody would see him. A neighbor? A postman? But his hope died as he took in his surroundings. He was in a small, completely enclosed courtyard. On one side was a high, wooden fence, solid and imposing. On the other three sides were the high, brick walls of the house itself. He was in a pit, a private, open-air prison. Luckily, it was a warm day, and as the sun beat down on his wet skin, the shivers soon disappeared, replaced by a dull, aching warmth.

He heard a car pull up on the other side of the back fence, followed by the low hum of a garage door opening. Then, two female voices, laughing and chatting. A gate in the fence swung open, and Nichola and another woman he didn't recognize walked through, carrying bags from a high-end deli. They were dressed in stylish, expensive clothes, the very picture of casual, affluent beauty.

If they spotted him, they chose to ignore him. They walked past him, just a few feet away, their conversation never faltering. Nichola was saying something about a ridiculous client at work. The other woman, a striking redhead with sharp, intelligent eyes, was agreeing with her. They carried on chatting as they walked into the house, the warm, delicious smell of fresh bread and roasted chicken wafting from their bags and filling the courtyard. James's mouth watered, and his stomach, empty for days, let out a loud, embarrassing grumble. He was invisible. He was nothing. He was just part of the scenery.

The sun began its slow descent, casting long shadows across the courtyard and turning the house's brick walls a warm, golden hue. James's skin, now dry, felt tight and sore from the brutal hosing. He had been chained to the pipe for hours, his muscles cramping, his thirst returning with a vengeance. He had tried to sit, seeking relief from the strain on his neck, but the chain was too short, forcing him to remain in a perpetually hunched position. He was an ornament of suffering, left to bake in the sun.

Finally, the back door opened. Tom emerged, his expression as blank and unreadable as ever. He walked over, his heavy footsteps echoing in the enclosed space. He produced a key and, with a series of metallic clicks, unlocked the padlock. James felt a momentary sense of relief, only to have it shattered when Tom grabbed the collar again and dragged him up.

He was pulled across the courtyard and into the house, his bare feet leaving wet prints on the clean, tiled floor of the kitchen. The smell of food was intoxicating, a cruel reminder of his own gnawing hunger. Tom didn't pause. He dragged him down a short hallway and into a large, tastefully decorated living room.

And there they were. Nichola and her friend sat together on a plush, cream-colored sofa. They sipped white wine, the bottle chilling in an ice bucket on the coffee table in front of them. The friend, whom he now knew was Jenny, was the striking redhead he had seen earlier. She was even more intimidating up close, her eyes a cool, appraising green.

Tom unceremoniously shoved James forward, sending him stumbling into the center of the room. He stood there, naked, chained, and utterly humiliated, a stark contrast to the elegant, comfortable scene playing out before him.

Jenny stood up, placing her wine glass on the table with a delicate clink. She walked towards him, pulling on leather gloves, her movements fluid and predatory, like a big cat stalking its prey. She circled him slowly, her eyes raking over his body, a clinical, assessing gaze that made his skin crawl. She noted the heavy collar, the chafed wrists, the spiked cage. She completed her circle and stopped in front of him, turning to Nichola.

"Any limits?" she asked, her voice a low, purring contralto.

Nichola took a sip of her wine, a small, amused smile tugging at her lips. "We still need him alive for now," she said, her tone casual, as if discussing the terms of a rental agreement. "And able to sign papers if he's needed. Other than that," she added, her smile widening, "he's yours for the night."

Jenny's smile was dazzling, a flash of white teeth that held no warmth. She turned her full attention back to James. She took his chin in her hand, her grip surprisingly strong, her gloved fingers digging into his flesh.

"Do you hear that, lover?" she whispered, her voice a venomous caress. "You're my bitch tonight."

She let go of his chin, and for a split second, he thought it was just a threat, a piece of psychological theater. He was wrong. Her hand moved with blinding speed, a sharp, explosive motion. Her fist, a hard, compact knot of bone, slammed into the side of his face, just below his left eye.

The pain was instantaneous and blinding, a white-hot nova that exploded in his skull. The force of the punch knocked his head sideways and sent him stumbling backward, his feet tangling beneath him. He almost lost his footing, his arms flailing uselessly behind his back. He managed to stay upright, his head ringing, the world spinning.

His tongue shot to the spot where she had punched him in the mouth. His lip was already swelling, a fat, throbbing sausage of flesh. He could feel the split in the skin, and a slight, coppery taste of blood filled his mouth. He looked at her, his vision swimming, and saw no anger, no passion, just a cool, detached amusement. She hadn't done it because he had provoked her. She had done it because she could. Because he was hers for the night.
