Chapter 13

The menacing crackle of the cattle prod was the only sound in the room. James stared at the blue arcs of electricity, his mind recoiling in horror. This was a new level of pain, one he hadn't even conceived of. Jenny seemed to savor his terror, holding the prod for a moment longer before the crackling ceased.

"First lesson," she said, her voice dropping to a cold, instructional tone. "When I give a command, you obey. Instantly. No hesitation. No thinking. We're going to start with something simple."

She knelt down and, with practiced efficiency, began to unbuckle the numerous straps that crisscrossed his body. One by one, they came away, each release a small mercy that only served to highlight his complete helplessness. Finally, only the cuffs on his wrists and ankles remained. He lay on the floor, a mass of aching, bruised flesh, his limbs trembling as they were finally freed from their contorted prison.

"Kneel," she commanded.

He was slow. His body, stiff and sore, protested the movement. It took him a couple of seconds to push himself up, to get his knees under him.

CRACK-CRACK!

The prod was pressed against the small of his back. The pain was instantaneous, a white-hot, electric fire that convulsed his entire body. He screamed, a raw, choked sound, and collapsed back onto the floor, his muscles spasming uncontrollably.

"I said kneel," Jenny said, her voice utterly devoid of emotion. "Instantly."

He scrambled, his movements fueled by a primal terror of the pain. He forced his aching body to obey, pushing himself up until he was kneeling, his head bowed, his entire being focused on the floor in front of him, waiting for the next command.

"Good," she said, as if praising a dog for a simple trick. "Now, crawl to the door and back."

He began to crawl, his movements clumsy and painful. Every movement sent a fresh wave of agony through his body. He made it to the door and began the slow journey back.

CRACK-CRACK!

The prod touched his buttock. He yelped and flinched, his body jerking forward. "Faster," she said simply.

The training continued throughout the day. It was a relentless, systematic process of erasure. She taught him to heel, to walk behind her left knee, never straying more than a foot. He learned it after three shocks. She taught him to present, to kneel with his head on the floor and his ass in the air whenever she entered a room. He learned it after two. She taught him to eat and drink from bowls on the floor, using only his mouth. He learned it after the prod hovered menacingly over his neck, the threat of it more terrifying than the pain itself.

She broke him down into a series of simple, animalistic actions. There was no more James, the programmer. There was no more thought, no more logic. There was only command and response, pain and obedience. By late afternoon, he was a perfect, trembling puppet, his body moving automatically to anticipate her whims, his mind a blank, terrified void.

As dusk fell, they heard a car pull up outside. Jenny's face lit up with a genuine, excited smile. "They're home!" she chirped, like a child waiting for her parents. "Time to show off my new pet."

She clipped a leash to his collar and led him out of the room and down the stairs. He crawled on his hands and knees, his head down, the leash a constant, humiliating reminder of his status. She led him into the living room and commanded him to kneel in the center of the floor, his forehead pressed to the carpet.

The front door opened, and Nichola and Tom walked in, laughing and chattering. They looked relaxed, dressed in expensive, casual clothes. They were glowing with the health and happiness that only a luxurious mini break, funded by someone else's money, could provide.

"Hello, darlings! Did you have a lovely time?" Jenny asked, her voice bright and breezy.

"It was magnificent," Nichola sighed, dropping her designer shopping bags on the floor. "The spa was to die for. And you should see the restaurant we went to last night."

Tom grinned, clapping a hand on Jenny's shoulder. "You've been busy, I see."

"Oh, we've had a very productive day," Jenny said, her voice filled with pride. She nudged James with her foot. "Chattel, up. Present."

James's body moved on its own, trained by hours of pain and fear. He rose to his knees, then crawled forward, pressing his mouth first to each of Nicholas's shoes, then to both of Tom’s while thrusting his bruised and battered ass into the air, a perfect, submissive arch.

Nichola circled him, her expression one of cool, analytical curiosity. She looked him over, noting the new welts, the fresh bruises, the trembling in his limbs. She reached down and grabbed his hair, pulling his head up. His eyes were vacant, his face a mask of utter defeat.

"Well, well," she said, a slow smile spreading across her face. "You really have been a busy bee. He looks… perfectly broken."

"I prefer the term 'optimized," Jenny said with a smirk.

Nichola laughed, a delighted, musical sound. "I'll say. He'll be much more useful this way." She let go of his hair, and his head fell back to the floor with a soft thud. "Good work. You've earned a bonus."

Tom looked down at the kneeling, trembling man. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his wallet. He took out a wad of notes and handed them to Jenny.

They carried on chatting and laughing, leaving him kneeling on the floor. A final, crushing confirmation of his new reality. He was nothing. He was a toy, a training exercise, a source of amusement, and a source of money. And as he knelt there, his forehead pressed to the carpet, he knew, with a certainty that chilled him to the bone, that there was little of James left. Chattel was being created to replace him.

The sound of the front door closing as Jenny went to meet her Uber marked the end of the performance and the beginning of the sentence. The cheerful, brittle energy she had brought to the house vanished, leaving a cold, heavy silence in its wake. James remained kneeling on the floor; he didn't dare move.

Tom walked by, looking down at James with contempt. "Waste of good money," he grumbled, his voice losing its forced jolliness and returning to its usual low, gravelly rumble.

Nichola, however, seemed energized. She circled James slowly, her expensive heels clicking on the hardwood floor, a predator surveying her kill. "Oh, I don't know," she mused, reaching down to trail a single finger along his spine, making him flinch. "I think it's a sound investment. Look at him. He's house-trained."

She stopped in front of him and nudged his chin up with the toe of her shoe, forcing him to look at her. Her face was a mask of cool amusement, but her eyes held a new, calculating light. "The weekend's over, Chattel. Time to get you settled into your new routine."

Tom clipped the leash to James's collar, using it to haul him to his feet. He didn't speak, simply dragged James from the living room, down the hallway, and towards the cellar door. James stumbled, his legs still weak from the day's "training." The cellar was no longer just his prison; it was his home.

Tom shoved him inside, his bare feet slapping on the cold concrete floor. Nichola followed, carrying a small, metal pet bowl. She placed it in the corner. "Dinner," she announced, her voice flat. Inside the bowl was a pile of bland, grey-looking mush, the consistency of wet cement. It smelled of nothing.

She looked down at him, her expression devoid of any pity. "You'll eat when we tell you to eat. You'll sleep when we tell you to sleep. You'll exist to serve us. That is your function now. Understand?"

James just stared, his mind a blank slate of terror and obedience.

Without another word, they turned and left, locking the heavy steel door behind them. The bolt slid home with a deafening, final clang. James was plunged into darkness, the only light coming from the small, grimy window high on the wall. He was alone, with only the silent, watching eyes of the house and the unappetizing meal in the corner for company. The long, slow night of his new life had begun.
