Chapter 24 of 25

The Witch's Due

The shimmering aura of golden light receded as she stepped fully into the throne room, settling around her like the last sigh of a dying star. In the sudden, charged silence, the being's true form was starkly revealed. Her ageless beauty was even more imposing up close, a classically sculpted face set with eyes of molten gold that held no hint of the subservience that plagued every other soul in this house.

George's brow furrowed in confusion, a dangerous flicker of vulnerability in his expression. Those eyes… they plucked at a chord of memory so ancient and buried it was almost indistinct. A ghost from a life he had consciously erased, a time before his transformation. He saw a wrinkled face, a gnarled hand, a voice chanting in a torchlit dungeon. But the connection was tenuous, a fractured echo he couldn't piece together.

Lilith, however, had no such trouble. A strangled, surprised yelp escaped her lips, a sound of pure, animalistic shock as though she had been bitten by an unseen serpent. Her body recoiled from the newcomer, the consummate queen suddenly looking like a cornered prey animal.

"Agnes," Lilith breathed, the name a curse and a prayer in one.

The being's smile was terrible in its triumph. "You remember me, then. Good. It is important the condemned knows the name of her executioner." The voice was a chorus, ancient and resonant, the voice of the woman who had sent him on his path.

George’s mind raced. Agnes. The witch. The crone who had given him immortality, who had cursed him with a barren seed. The one who had sent him hurtling through time with the singular, burning purpose of finding the woman who had killed his father. A memory, cold and sharp, pierced through his centuries-won composure. Agnes hadn't just given him the drive; she had planted it like a seed in his mind, feeding it with her own quiet, focused magic, ensuring his obsession would never wane.

"You... you followed me," George stated, the revelation dawning with the force of a physical blow. "All this time."

"Of course, my little prince," Agnes purred, her golden eyes never leaving Lilith. "I was the hidden force, the shadow at your back. You were my hunting dog, George. I let you run, sniffing out the trail, building your power, doing the messy work of acquiring the resources I would need. Your cruelty was a convenient tool. My goal was ever, and only, her."

She pointed a single, elegant finger at Lilith, who was now standing frozen, her face a mask of disbelief and fury. "He was my true love, you see. Your king. We were to rule through the eons together, a partnership of old magic and noble blood. But you, with your impulsive, whorish power, you couldn't wait. You murdered him and jumped through time with a stolen spell, leaving me with nothing but his cooling corpse and a promise to keep."

Understanding crashed in on George. He wasn't a master of his own destiny; he was an instrument of another's revenge.

Lilith, her paralysis finally breaking, began to chant, her hands weaving complex patterns in the air. The words were ancient, guttural, the language of pure magic. But the spell felt thin, brittle, like fine old porcelain that had been left untouched for too long. Magic was a muscle, a skill, and Lilith had grown soft, indolent in her power, preferring to rule through psychological torment rather than honing the raw, elemental forces she once commanded.

Agnes watched her with a look of profound pity. "Oh, Lilith. You have dined on the scraps of dominance for so long you have forgotten the taste of true power." Agnes didn't chant. She didn't gesture. She simply spoke a single, liquid syllable that seemed to unmake the very air in the room.

Lilith's chant died in her throat, her mouth hanging open in a silent scream. The power she had summoned dissipated like smoke in a hurricane.

"As my hunting dog sharpened his teeth on the weak," Agnes continued, her voice echoing in the sudden, deafening silence, " I have honed my craft. You have five centuries of rust on you, my dear. I have five centuries of practice."

With a flick of her wrist, George and Lilith were ripped from their thrones by an invisible, irresistible force and slammed to the floor, landing hard beside the now-forgotten Alistair Thorne, who stared in uncomprehending terror.

"Your power begins in the tongue," Agnes said, walking slowly toward them. "So we shall begin there." Another word, and a searing pain shot through their jaws, their tongues feeling as if they were being boiled in their own mouths. They tried to scream, but only choked; guttural sounds emerged. Their speech was gone, stolen by a spell.

"But physical tools are so... permanent," Agnes mused, as a shadow detached itself from the doorway. A man in a doctor's coat entered, rolling a small, stainless steel medical tray. His eyes were glassy, his movements robotic, completely enthralled.

Agnes knelt beside Lilith, cupping her chin in a surprisingly gentle grip. "You took my love's voice from him with your spell. Now I shall take yours from you with knife and steel." She nodded to the surgeon, who approached with a gleaming scalpel. Lilith's eyes widened in pure, absolute horror, her body thrashing against the magical bonds holding her down. Agnes merely watched, a faint, contented smile on her face, as the surgeon performed his grim work with cold, methodical precision. The same procedure was repeated on George, silent screams of agony wracking their bodies as their ability to speak was carved from them forever. They were brought to heel, not with the slow, psychological artistry of seduction, but with the brutal finality of a butcher.
