Chapter 6 of 25
The Houston skyline glittered outside the penthouse office of Vigilant Industries, a testament to three centuries of accumulated wealth and influence. George stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows, his reflection superimposed over the city lights—the same face that had haunted courts and markets across time, now wearing the bespoke suit of a modern tech billionaire. His agelessness required careful documentation management, handled with ruthless efficiency by teams of lawyers and forgers who never understood the full scope of their service.
"Your 3:00 is here, Mr. Vigilant," his assistant announced through the intercom. George didn't turn to acknowledge her—Chloe had been recruited from the highest echelons of corporate law, a brilliant mind now dedicated entirely to his service. Her professional demeanor concealed the collar she wore beneath her silk blouse, the marks his attentions had left across her body, the absolute psychological surrender that made her invaluable.
"Send her in," George directed, adjusting his cufflinks automatically.
The woman who entered moved with liquid confidence that immediately caught George's interest. Expensive suit, impeccable posture, eyes that assessed more than observed—all markers of the predators he usually hunted rather than the prey who sought him out.
"Mr. Vigilant, I'm Victoria Sterling," she said, extending a hand that George ignored deliberately, watching as she withdrew it with the faintest flicker of irritation before masking it perfectly. "I represent certain interests who believe we have mutually valuable information to exchange."
"Sterling?" George repeated, turning finally to face her fully. "Any relation to Alexander Sterling?"
"His sister," Victoria confirmed, her expression carefully neutral. "Which is precisely why I'm here. My brother has been... preoccupied with certain personal pursuits for the past several months. Pursuits that have affected his business interests and his judgment."
George gestured toward the seating area, where two of his attendants immediately appeared from hidden alcoves to serve refreshments. Both had been high-powered executives before their "recruitment"—men and women broken and remade to serve his every whim. Victoria watched the display with practiced composure, though George noted the subtle strain around her eyes.
"Alexander Sterling recently transferred controlling interest in his portfolio to a blind trust administered by a 'Lilith Enterprises'," George said, watching Victoria's reaction closely. "A transfer that coincided oddly with his withdrawal from public life."
Victoria's composure fractured for just a moment—the widening of eyes when she heard the name, the instinctive pivot toward the door before training took over and she steeled herself to stay.
"Then you already know why I'm here," she replied when she could trust her voice.
"Your brother paid a substantial sum for consultation services with a specialist in behavioral modification," George continued casually. "A specialist who subsequently acquired control of his business empire through methods that, while technically legal, border on psychological warfare."
"The 'specialist' calls herself Lilith," Victoria said softly. "Though that's clearly not her real name."
George felt something shift inside him—a current of excitement so intense it almost made him tremble. For centuries, he had pursued her, never knowing which century she had transported herself to. Now, after all this time, there was finally substance.
"Everything has a price, Ms. Sterling," George said, his voice carefully measured. "Information about this Lilith would be exceptionally valuable to me."
"My concern is my brother," Victoria countered, recovering her composure. "He's not himself anymore. He speaks of her with... reverence. Complete psychological surrender. I want him back, or I want her exposed."
George smiled faintly, recognizing the desperation beneath the professional facade. "And what makes you think I would help you rather than acquire your information and pursue my own agenda?"
"Because your reputation suggests certain ... specialized interests," Victoria replied. "Interests that might align with mine. I've researched your business practices, Mr. Vigilant. The pattern of acquisitions across centuries, starting with European financial markets in the 1600s. The striking resemblance of early portraits to your current appearance. The convenient deaths of business rivals throughout history. You're not like other men, and neither is this Lilith."
Interesting, George thought. Someone had pieced together enough of his history to be dangerous, but not enough to know the full truth of his existence.
"What exactly are you proposing?" he asked, motioning for one of his attendants—Juarez, a former competitor who now served as his personal bodyguard/plaything—to pour him a drink.
"An alliance," Victoria said directly. "I provide you with everything I know about Lilith—her location, her methods, her business interests. In return, you help me break her hold over my brother and reclaim control of his empire."
George swirled the amber liquid in his glass, considering. "And if I decline?"
"Then I go to others with what I know about both you and Lilith," Victoria replied coolly. "Not your entire history, of course—just enough to complicate your business interests and hers. I don't care about exposing immortals or time travelers; I care about my brother."
George nodded slowly. Honor among thieves, or at least among predators. He could respect that.
"Tell me everything," he directed. "Now."
"Lilith operates primarily from an estate in Kent, outside Maidstone," Victoria began, her words confirming what George had already suspected from financial tracking. "She calls herself a 'dominance consultant' for the ultra-wealthy, but that's just the surface. What she really does is complete psychological reconditioning. She breaks people down and rebuilds them into her perfect servants."
"Like your brother?"
"Worse than you can imagine," Victoria replied with genuine pain. "He was always dominant in business—ruthless, controlling. Now he refers to himself as 'property,' keeps his eyes downcast, speaks only when spoken to. He manages her financial empire with perfect efficiency, but his personality is... gone. Replaced with something devoted to her service."
"Her other clients?" George asked, though he already knew the answer.
"Dozens at least," Victoria confirmed. "All beyond wealthy—tech moguls, politicians, celebrities. All transformed into her devotees. She runs what amounts to a private army of powerful men and women who serve her completely while maintaining public facades of normality."
George felt his excitement grow with each detail. This was exactly what he had become himself—what he had been working toward across centuries. A network of power built on the psychological domination of others. Could she truly be Lilith? His Lilith?
"She holds a gathering each month," Victoria continued, her voice dropping slightly. " Her inner circle attends. That's when she's most reachable, most vulnerable."
"Vulnerable?" George repeated with amusement. "She sounds anything but vulnerable."
"Everyone has vulnerabilities," Victoria countered. "Even someone like her. And she doesn't know anyone is hunting her. She believes herself to be the hunter, not the prey."
George smiled. She had never met him, never faced an equal who understood precisely what she was and how she operated. The hunter would become hunted, the predator would become prey.
"Arrange for my invitation to her next gathering," George directed. "Tell her I represent certain Middle Eastern interests looking to acquire her behavioral modification methods for their intelligence operations. Offer her an obscene amount of money—enough to ensure she meets with me personally."
"And my brother?" Victoria asked.
"Once I have Lilith where I want her, your brother will be the least of her concerns," George promised. "I'll make sure he's released from her... condition."
As Victoria departed, George moved to stand before the window again, the city lights now seeming dim compared to the brilliant possibility of finally finding the woman who had set him on this journey three centuries ago. All the wealth, all the power, all the psychological destruction he had wrought—all of it leading to this moment.
After so many lifetimes, after becoming the very monster Lilith had awakened in his father's dungeon, he would finally stand before her again. Not as the naive prince she had seduced and abandoned, not as the subjugated servant she preferred, but as her equal in every way.
"I'm coming for you, Lilith," he whispered to the city below. "And this time, we'll rule together—or not at all."
