Chapter 7 of 20

Ghost and the Heir

Jack Harlan stepped out of the private shuttle onto the polished black stone of the Elysium Academy’s visitor arrival plaza. At twenty-eight, he carried the quiet weight of his recent inheritance—vast estates, factories, and the social obligations that came with them. His tailored dark suit felt too formal for the warm afternoon, but it helped him maintain the composure he was rapidly losing.

His friend Marcus had practically dragged him here. “You’ve been buried in lawyers and ledgers for months,” Marcus had said. “Come see the auction preview. Train a slave or two as a hobby. It’ll clear your head.”

Jack had agreed mostly to shut him up. Legalized slavery was normal in Elysium—efficient, he’d been told—but he had never imagined himself participating. It felt… archaic. Cruel, even. Yet here he was.

A sleek attendant in a crisp uniform greeted him. “Mr. Harlan, welcome. We have a private tour prepared. Many fine trainees are ready for the upcoming auction.”

The facility was disturbingly modern: clean lines, soft lighting, the faint scent of leather and disinfectant. They passed observation windows where trainers worked with hooded, bound slaves. Jack’s stomach tightened at the sight of a young woman locked in a heavy wooden frame, her body marked with fresh cane stripes, a thick machine rhythmically working between her spread thighs. Another was sealed in a full latex deprivation suit, twitching as low electricity played across her skin.

This is what I’m considering buying? he thought, a wave of misgiving hitting him hard. A person. Reduced to this.

He almost turned around. The whole thing felt wrong—despite how normalized it was in their society. He had built his life on order, contracts, and mutual respect in business. Owning another human being as a toy seemed like crossing a line he wasn’t sure he wanted to cross.

Then they reached the private viewing suite.

The attendant pulled up several profiles on a large screen. “Here are some promising candidates currently in advanced training. This one might interest you—Trainee S-4721.”

The profile image appeared.

Jack froze.

Red hair. Pale skin scattered with delicate freckles. Hazel eyes that looked equal parts terrified and quietly resilient. The photo showed her on her knees in a heavy leather harness and chastity belt, collar locked around her slender throat, a bit gag holding her mouth open. She looked heartbreakingly similar to her—Liora, the woman he had loved and nearly married three years ago. The same soft features, the same shade of auburn hair, the same scattering of freckles across the bridge of her nose.

Liora had betrayed him—sold corporate secrets to a rival and disappeared with another man. The pain had nearly broken him. He had thrown himself into work to forget her.

And now this girl… Sophie… looked like a ghost of what might have been.

He scrolled through the training footage and notes. Recent sessions showed her gradual breaking: sealed in sensory deprivation, caned while reciting obedience rules, locked in an adult high chair and conditioned to beg for needles. The quiet way she submitted, the tears, the way her body still trembled with unwanted arousal despite everything—they stirred something dark and hungry in him.

“She’s still quite new to full service training,” the attendant noted. “Naïve. Quiet. Very responsive to denial and psychological work. Her family background adds an interesting edge—daughter of a convicted rebel.”

Jack’s fingers tightened on the edge of the table. Misgivings still churned in his gut. This is wrong. She’s a person, not a replacement for Liora. Yet the resemblance pulled at him like a magnet. The idea of taking this fragile, breaking girl home… training her himself… watching those hazel eyes look up at him with total, conditioned devotion… it ignited something primal he hadn’t felt since before the betrayal.

“Tell me more about her current status,” Jack said, his voice steadier than he felt. The misgivings were still there, but they were being slowly, inexorably drowned out by intrigue.

The attendant smiled knowingly. “She’s scheduled for more intensive sessions over the coming days. Would you like a live observation window, or perhaps a private meeting after the auction preview?”

Jack leaned back, eyes fixed on Sophie’s photo.

“Yes,” he said quietly. “I think I would.”
