Chapter 12 of 26
The evening that followed was a study in quiet surrealism. Amy, her body still humming with the phantom memory of its ordeal, moved through the familiar motions of domestic life like an automaton. She was surprised. Jack was more conversational than he had been for years. He didn't retreat to his armchair with the financial news; instead, he joined her in the dining room, a glass of wine in hand. He chatted about his day, the petty politics of the office, and a difficult client he had managed to placate. He asked about hers, his eyes holding a genuine interest that she hadn't seen in him for a long time.
She blushed as she remembered her day, the rubber hood, the forced orgasms, the stinging leather. "Oh, you know," she mumbled, "Just... things. The house." She felt a gulf between them wider than the Medway itself. He was talking about tax codes; she had been a live-streamed fetish toy. The disconnect was so profound, it was almost funny.
Eventually, she faked a yawn. "I think I'm off to bed," she said, suddenly desperate for the solitude of the darkened bedroom.
"I'm a little tired too," he replied, draining his glass. "I might just join you."
Panic, sharp and ridiculous, seized Amy. It was a silly, primal panic. He wasn't allowed to see her naked. Geraldine had forbidden it. Her body was no longer her own to share. Plus, there were the marks. Five wonderful, stinging red lines that crisscrossed her buttocks, a secret map of her submission. They were a brand, a testament to her afternoon, and she couldn't let him see them.
Luckily, as usual, he took his time in the bathroom, his habit of scrolling through emails on his tablet while he used the facilities giving her a precious window of opportunity. She darted into the bedroom, her heart pounding, and quickly undressed, slipping a modest, long-sleeved cotton nightie on just moments before he came in. He slid under the duvet, and she lay rigid beside him, waiting.
Then the next weird thing happened. He shifted, and his strong arm came over her shoulder, drawing her in against his side. It was a gesture of intimacy so long absent that it felt alien. He kissed her forehead, a soft, paternal kiss. She was surprised, and a wave of something she couldn't identify—guilt, affection, pity—washed over her. She lay there in the circle of his arm, her body aching from Geraldine's punishment, but she wondered, if her hand explored lower, if she touched him, would he be hard? The thought was a betrayal, but she couldn't help it. She lay awake long after his breathing had deepened into sleep, her mind a chaotic mess of Geraldine's commands and Jack's simple, unknowing affection.
