Chapter 3 of 26
The two weeks that followed were a special kind of hell, a limbo of Amy's own making. The silence from Geraldine was absolute, a void that seemed to mock the frantic beating of Amy's heart. She checked her phone with a desperation that bordered on mania, her stomach lurching at every vibration, only to plummet when it was another mundane notification. The rambling club meeting was a torment of absence. She scanned the familiar faces, the tweed and the Gore-Tex, but Geraldine's formidable presence was nowhere to be seen. The walk felt more pointless than ever, the mud sucking at her boots like the very earth was trying to drag her back down into her old life. At home, Jack was his usual, dependable self. He'd ask how her walk was, and she would mumble a non-committal answer, her mind replaying the sting of a hand on her bare skin, the low, authoritative voice that had woken a part of her she never knew existed. She felt like a fraud, a secret agent living a double life in her own head, a life that had apparently been canceled without her consent.
The thrill of the punishment had faded, replaced by a gnawing sense of rejection and a profound, aching frustration. She had been tested and found wanting. The brief, incandescent moment of feeling truly alive was extinguished, and all that was left was the grey ash of her former existence. She almost threw the phone away, almost resolved to delete Geraldine's number and accept her fate. But she couldn't. The memory was too potent, a drug she had tasted once and now craved with a cellular hunger.
Then, on a mundane Tuesday morning, as she was listlessly dusting the mantelpiece, the doorbell rang. It was a courier with a plain brown cardboard box. There was no sender's name, just her address typed on a label. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she carried it to the kitchen, her hands trembling slightly. With a knife, she carefully sliced through the tape. Inside, nestled in layers of expensive tissue paper, was not one item, but a collection. Lingerie. But not the kind she owned. Her drawers were filled with sensible, practical cotton bras in beige and white, serviceable briefs designed for comfort, not seduction. This was different. This was a language she didn't speak.
There was a bra of deep emerald green silk, so fine it felt like water. Another in burgundy satin, trimmed with delicate black lace. There were panties to match, thongs so skimpy they were little more than strings, and high-waisted briefs in sheer black mesh that left nothing to the imagination. And stockings. Sheer, seamed stockings held in place by a delicate black lace suspender belt with tiny satin ribbons. The fabrics were luxurious, decadent, utterly alien. She held up a pair of the silk stockings, the material impossibly smooth and cool against her fingertips. This was lingerie for a woman who was desired, a woman who took risks. A woman who was nothing like her.
As she was staring at the scandalous collection, her phone buzzed on the counter. The text was from the same unknown number. "These are the only lingerie pieces you will wear from now on. Come to my house this afternoon at 3 pm. Bring all of your sensible underwear with you. Wear the black silk set, including the stockings."
A wave of heat washed over Amy, a cocktail of sheer terror and exhilarating thrill. This was it. The silence had been a test, a period of withdrawal to make her appreciate the next fix. The command was absolute, leaving no room for negotiation. Bring all of your sensible underwear. The implication was clear. A ritual. A burning of bridges. She looked at the clock. It was just after eleven. She had four hours.
The afternoon passed in a haze of nervous energy. She showered, her skin feeling hypersensitive, every nerve ending tingling with anticipation. She went to her bedroom, to the underwear drawer, and with a sense of solemnity, she began to pull out every cotton bra, every practical brief, every pair of beige tights. She made a pile on the bed, a small mountain of her former life, a testament to thirty-five years of comfortable, predictable marriage. Then, she turned to the box.
Dressing was an act of transformation. The black silk bra was unlike anything she had ever worn. It was a half-cup design, lifting her breasts and presenting them high, the lace-topped cups so low they barely covered her nipples. The feel of the cool, smooth silk against her skin was electrifying. Next came the matching panties, a mere triangle of silk and lace at the front, with a thong back that settled between her buttocks, a constant, intimate reminder of their presence. She sat on the edge of the bed to attach the stockings to the garter belt, her fingers fumbling with the tiny metal clips. The sheer nylon whispered against her legs as she pulled them up, the delicate seam running perfectly down the back of her calves. She stood before the full-length mirror, barely recognizing the woman who stared back. Her reflection was flushed, her eyes wide and dark. The lingerie was exquisite, expensive, and it made her feel powerful and vulnerable all at once. She pulled on her dress, a simple wrap, but she could feel the secret armor beneath it, the silk and lace against her skin, a constant, thrilling friction.
The drive to Geraldine's was a blur. Her hands were slick with sweat on the steering wheel, her stomach a knot of nervous excitement. She had never felt like this, not even as a young woman on the eve of her honeymoon with Jack. That had been a sweet, gentle anticipation. This was a fierce, terrifying current, a feeling of being pulled towards a precipice she couldn't wait to leap from. She parked and walked to the door, the bag containing her old life held tightly in her hand, her legs shaking so much she wondered if they would hold her.
Geraldine opened the door before she could knock. She was dressed simply, in black trousers and a white shirt, but her presence filled the doorway. Her eyes swept over Amy, from her face down to her feet, and then back to her eyes. A flicker of satisfaction crossed her face. "Good," she said, her voice that same low, commanding purr. "You're learning. Come in."
She led Amy not into the house, but through the kitchen and out into the back garden. It was a large, wild space, overgrown in places but with a certain rugged beauty. At the very back, near a high brick wall, stood a large metal burn barrel, the kind used for garden waste. Geraldine stopped beside it and turned to face Amy. She held out her hand. "Your old life," she said simply.
With trembling hands, Amy opened the bag and began to pull out the cotton and nylon garments, dropping them into the barrel. The beige, the white, the sensible, the practical. It looked pathetic and drab against the dark metal. Geraldine took a box of matches from her pocket, struck one, and tossed it into the barrel. The flames caught quickly, licking at the fabric with a hungry orange glow. Amy stood and watched as the fire consumed her past, the acrid smell of burning nylon and cotton filling the air. It was a funeral pyre for the woman she used to be. She felt a strange sense of loss, but it was drowned by a surge of liberation so powerful it made her dizzy.
