Tom held the metal box in his hands. His years of effort had paid off.
Tom had always been interested in mind control. Obsessed, really. He had especially wanted to explore the more prurient options enabled by mind control. So he had gone to college to study the brain and poured over research papers. He had worked hard to fulfill his impure aims.
He’d found subtle evidence that the people who knew the most were the spooks. Er, sorry, the “intelligence community.” They wouldn’t tell him much, but they liked cheap college labor. He’d gained their trust over time through his college and had learned some things. He couldn’t personally reproduce their work, and he couldn’t get everything they knew. Instead, he’d made a physical replica of their prize device, swapped it with a real device, and managed to arrange what appeared to be an accidental destruction of a real device. It felt good to fool the people who were expert at fooling others.
Now, in his solitary apartment, Tom looked over the real device he’d long coveted and now possessed. It didn’t look like much. It was a metal box with a grid on one side and an electrical plug on the other. A smaller socket supported a connection to a computer. The box was small, about the size of a toaster. It didn’t matter what it looked like. What mattered was what it did.
Real-world mind control was probably always going to be limited compared to fantasies. This device, officially called “the educator,” couldn’t make people do things. It couldn’t eliminate or substantially change fully processed memories either. Instead, the educator put subjects into an unconscious and suggestible state. In this state, any suggested new memories would be accepted as long as they didn’t conflict with existing fully processed memories. New events could be added, if they didn’t conflict with important events in memory. Emotions could also be added or changed about how the subject interpreted events in their memory. The subject wouldn’t remember being put in the suggestible state, and the new memories would feel as real as any other memory.
The educator could be configured to leave certain minds alone. This was a safety measure so the spooks wouldn’t be accidentally manipulated by their own device. Tom configured the educator so it would always leave Tom’s mind completely unaffected. As an extra safety measure, he programmed the educator to never modify the memories of men. He wanted to manipulate women, not men. Tom carefully reviewed its manual, helpfully included in the device’s memory. The educator could make people suggestible within 20 feet. It could also put people to sleep up to 500 feet and it supported geofences so users could select exactly whose minds would be put to sleep. The educator was specifically designed so its users could perform a stealthy entrance, add memories, and exit. It was perfect for espionage. It was also perfect for more sensual purposes.
Tom knew exactly who he wanted to target first. He’d long been lusting for a particular girl at his college. Darcie. She was a beautiful and busty junior at the college. When she wore short skirts, her legs turned heads. Tom had lusted after her from the moment he had first seen her.
Darcie had briefly talked with Tom several times at college, but only as short a time as necessary to be polite. They were both students, but in different worlds. They were in different programs, and he was in graduate school. Tom had arranged several “chance” interactions on campus. She had aggressively rebuffed him every time. She had made it clear she wasn’t interested in him. She thought he was far beneath her. She also wasn’t interested in casual sex in general. She was a beauty on the outside, but he felt she’d been a stuck-up nasty bitch on the inside to him. She had been increasingly bitchy and haughty every time he tried to talk with her.
He knew things would change soon.
