Chapter 4 of 20
The autumn chill had settled firmly over Rochester, and a persistent dampness seeped through the walls of the Spences' terraced house, mirroring the cold dread that had taken root in Chloe's soul. Her days had become a litany of servitude, a performance of degradation Annie choreographed. But it was the evenings that had evolved into a unique and exquisite form of psychological torture.
Dinner was the centerpiece of this nightly ritual. Chloe would slave over the stove, preparing meals that Gary and Annie would consume with an air of casual entitlement, their conversation flowing around her as if she were an inanimate object. They would discuss their days, their plans, their shared jokes, while Chloe sat hunched at the far end of the table, a ghost in her own home, pushing food around her plate, her appetite having vanished weeks ago. When they were finished, the plates would be pushed towards her without a word, the clatter of cutlery a signal for her to begin her work of clearing and cleaning, their backs already turned to her as they retreated to the living room.
One Tuesday evening, as Annie's perfume and Gary's aftershave mingled in the air, a familiar, hot coil of resentment tightened in Chloe's gut. She had been scrubbing a stubborn stain on the kitchen floor for twenty minutes while they laughed at something on television. She stood up, her hands raw, her knees aching, and a surge of adrenaline, wild and unfamiliar, coursed through her. She was going to walk in there and scream. She was going to smash something. She was going to remind them that her name was Chloe and she was a human being.
She took a step towards the living room, her hands clenched into fists. But as she reached the doorway, Annie glanced up from the sofa. No anger in her expression, no surprise. Just a single, arched eyebrow and a look of profound, weary disappointment, as if Chloe were a misbehaving child who had just ruined a party. The look was a physical blow, more effective than any slap. It extinguished her rage in an instant, leaving behind only the cold, familiar ash of her submission. She turned silently and went back to her scrubbing.
The dynamic between Gary and Annie had grown exponentially more perverse. Gary, once a man of quiet routine, was now utterly beholden to Annie's capricious desires. He had to beg for her attention, for her touch. Annie delighted in this, insisting he strip naked in the hotel room before she would even consider granting him a moment of her time. She would make him kneel, his head bowed, while she circled him, her heels clicking on the grimy carpet, her commentary a relentless stream of degradation aimed at Chloe.
"Look at you," she'd purr, running a long, red nail down Gary's spine. "So desperate for it. And yet you go home every night to... that." She'd say the word 'that' with a curl of her lip, as if describing something unpleasant found under a rock. "Does she even feel like a woman, Gary? All sharp angles and bones. No softness. No warmth. Not like me." She'd press her generous curves against his back, her breasts cushioning him. "You prefer fucking me, don't you? Admit it. Tell me how much better I am."
And he would. His voice, thick with shame and lust, would confirm his betrayal. "I prefer you, Annie. You're... you're what I need." Each admission was another brick removed from the foundation of his marriage, and Annie, the master architect of his ruin, would reward him by finally letting him have her, encouraging his most primal instincts, all while recording his depravity on her phone.
A few nights after her failed rebellion, Chloe was in the kitchen, loading the dishwasher, the muffled sounds of their laughter from the living room a constant soundtrack to her misery. Annie, in one of her nightly moods of teasing cruelty, had her hand riding high up Gary's thigh, her hand stroking him through his trousers as she whispered filth in his ear. She was getting him worked up, knowing full well she had forbidden Chloe from touching him, from comforting him, from being a wife to him in any way. She loved sending him to bed hard and frustrated, his mind a mess of conflicting desires, his body aching for a release only she could provide.
"You're so hard for me," Annie giggled softly. "Poor Gary. All that need, and nothing to do with it. Maybe you should just go take a cold shower. Or maybe... you should just beg a little more."
A sudden, sharp crash from the kitchen broke the spell. A ceramic serving plate, slick with soap, had slipped from Chloe's trembling hands and shattered on the tiled floor. The sound was like a gunshot in the tense atmosphere.
Annie's face twisted in fury; her sensual mood evaporated. "For fuck's sake!" she hissed, turning away from Gary. "Can't that useless cow do anything right?" She grabbed Gary's hand. "Come on."
They found Chloe on her hands and knees, meticulously gathering the sharp, white shards, her body rigid with the expectation of punishment. Annie leaned into Gary, her lips brushing his ear. "That's where she belongs," she whispered, then flicked her tongue out to taste the salt on his neck. "On her knees. In the dirt. It's her natural state."
Chloe looked up, her eyes wide with fear, to see them standing over her, a united front of judgment and contempt. Annie's expression was one of cold calculation, but there was something else in Gary's eyes—a flicker of something new. Emboldenment.
Annie whispered again, her voice a venomous caress. "She needs to be punished for being so clumsy. For interrupting us. For being so... pathetic."
Gary took a deep breath, his chest puffing out slightly. It was as if Annie's words had unlocked a part of him he'd never known existed. "Chloe," he began, his voice stern and unfamiliar. "Look at you. You're letting me down. You're supposed to be my wife, but you can't even manage to keep house without breaking things. You're letting Annie down, being such a terrible hostess. Is this how you treat all your guests?"
Chloe stared at him, her mouth agape. This was worse than any slap. The man who had once brought her tea in bed when she was ill was now dressing her down for the benefit of her tormentor. A sob escaped her lips. She looked past Gary and saw Annie, standing behind him, her arms crossed, a smirk of pure, unadulterated triumph playing on her lips.
"I'm sorry, Gary," Chloe wept, her voice cracking.
"Sorry isn't good enough," Gary snapped, his confidence growing with each word. "Apologize to Annie. She's the one you've inconvenienced."
Chloe's gaze dropped to the floor. "I'm sorry, Annie," she whispered through her sobs.
"Louder," Gary commanded.
"I'm sorry, Annie," Chloe said again, her voice raspy with humiliation.
Gary's face was a mask of cold authority. He reached to his waist and, with a smooth, practiced motion that chilled Chloe to the bone, undid his leather belt and slid it from the loops of his trousers. He doubled it in his hand, the black leather seeming to absorb the light in the room.
"Stand up," he ordered. "Bend over the table."
Chloe's mind screamed in protest. This was too much. This was a line she could not cross. She started to shake her head, to beg, to argue. But then she saw it. Over Gary's shoulder, Annie had silently raised her phone, the screen glowing, her thumb poised over a button. The threat was unspoken, absolute. The pictures. The videos. Her ruin.
Defeated, Chloe slowly pushed herself to her feet. She walked to the heavy oak table where they had shared countless family meals, where she and Gary had once planned their honeymoon. She placed her palms flat on the cool wood and, closing her eyes, bent over, presenting herself for her punishment. The world shrank to the sound of her own ragged breathing and the whistle of the belt cutting through the air just before it bit into her flesh.
