Chapter 10

While Arthur was swallowed by darkness, Doris was bathed in light. The fire crackled, the champagne chilled, and Leo stood by the window, a patient, respectful presence. He was the perfect gentleman. He spoke of art, of travel, of books, his conversation easy and intelligent, never once making her feel as though he were performing for her. He was simply present.

"I think I'll take a bath," Doris said, testing the waters, testing him.

"An excellent idea," Leo smiled, his eyes warm. "Allow me. I drew it earlier, but I would be honored to refresh it for you. And to pamper you, if you'll allow me. Nothing more, I promise. Just to wash your hair and help you relax."

The offer was so genuine, so utterly alien to the transactional nature of her marriage, that it almost took her breath away. But a part of her, a part that was still clinging to the old Doris, hesitated. The intimacy of it felt like too much, too soon. "Not just yet," she said, her voice softer than she intended. "Thank you, Leo. That's a very kind offer."

"Of course," he replied without a flicker of disappointment. "I'll just wait for you on the balcony. The evening is lovely."

He stepped outside, giving her complete privacy. Doris sank into the hot, fragrant water, the steam enveloping her, washing away the lingering tension of the journey. She closed her eyes and let out a long, slow breath. This was what she had been missing. Not just sex, not just attention, but care. Genuine, uncomplicated care.

When she emerged, wrapped in a thick, luxurious robe, her skin glowing and her hair damp, she felt renewed. She took her time drying her hair and dressing in a simple summer dress.  Leo was waiting, and he took her for a walk around the manicured grounds, his arm linked through hers. He pointed out constellations in the clear night sky and told her the history of the old estate. Doris was amazed; there was never a nervous silence, never a moment when he struggled for something to say. He was interested in her, asking about her tastes, her opinions, her dreams, things Arthur hadn't bothered with in decades.

Dinner was in the manor's four-star restaurant, a candle-lit affair with crisp white linen and hushed, attentive service. Leo chose the wine, a rich, complex Burgundy that paired perfectly with her food. He laughed at her stories and listened intently when she spoke. He looked at her, not as an object or an accessory, but as a woman. It was intoxicating.

He walked her back to her suite, the silence between them now comfortable and companionable. At her door, he paused. "Thank you for a wonderful evening, Doris," he said, his voice low. "I've enjoyed every moment."

He leaned in slightly, not for a kiss, but as if to give her the option. It was the perfect end to a perfect evening, a natural, beautiful prelude to inviting him inside, to finishing the night in his arms, in her bed. But Doris hesitated. A powerful wave of emotion washed over her, a confusing mix of desire and a fierce, protective instinct. She wasn't ready for that. Not yet. The pleasure was too new, too precious to share. She wanted to own it for herself first.

"Goodnight, Leo," she said, her voice barely a whisper. "It was... perfect."

He understood. He simply smiled, gave a slight bow, and retreated down the corridor. Doris closed the door, her heart thumping. She didn't feel regret. She felt power. The power to choose. The power to say no.

She slipped out of her dress, into the robe, and lay down on the vast, comfortable bed, the cool sheets a welcome caress. She picked up her tablet from the bedside table, her movements deliberate. The screen glowed in the darkened room, and she navigated back to the secure link.

The feed from Arthur's cell was still active, now using a night-vision lens that cast everything in a sickly, monochromatic green. He was curled up on the cot, a pathetic, huddled shape. The heavy collar was a dark band around his neck, the chain from his ankle snaking across the floor to the bedframe. As she watched, one of the nurses entered, her face a ghostly mask in the green light. She carried a bowl of thin, gruel-like porridge and a bottle of water. She didn't speak. She simply placed them on the floor beside the cot. Then she left.

Arthur smelled the bowl and put it back down. He picked it up. The bottle was returned to his cot.

Doris watched, her expression unreadable. She saw her husband, the tyrant, the adulterer, the man who had made her feel small and invisible for twenty years, being broken down, piece by piece. She saw him reduced to an animal in a cage. And as she watched, a slow, cold smile touched her lips. She felt a surge of satisfaction so deep and profound that it was more pleasurable, more satisfying, than any touch Leo could have offered. This was her true completion. This was her perfect ending to the day.
