Chapter 4 of 26
"Excellent," Eleanor said, a note of satisfaction in her voice as she closed the file. She steepled her fingers, her gaze sharp and analytical. "Now, let us be clear about the methodology. What we do is not random cruelty; it is a precise, multi-layered process designed to dismantle a man's ego and rebuild it to our specifications."
She leaned forward, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial tone. "We begin with his world, his empire. Arthur's business is his true pride, his identity. It is also his greatest vulnerability. We will start there. Not by destroying it, but by systematically introducing chaos. Small, untraceable errors in logistics. Misdirected shipments. An anonymous tip to the tax authorities about a minor irregularity. We will make him question his own competence and his staff's loyalty. We will erode his confidence from the outside in, making him feel powerless in the one area where he believes he is a god. This mental siege is crucial; it weakens his foundations, making him receptive to what comes next."
Eleanor paused, letting the image of Arthur's crumbling empire settle in Doris's mind. "Once he is sufficiently softened, we will move to phase two. You will both receive an invitation to a very exclusive, very private health retreat. A seven-day intensive wellness program, gifted to you by a 'grateful' business associate. It will seem like a godsend to Arthur, a chance to escape the pressures we will have so carefully manufactured."
"Upon arrival, you will be separated. You, Doris, will be treated like the queen you are. Massages, gourmet food, beauty treatments, personal attention. You will flourish. He will see this. He will see you radiant, relaxed, and utterly happy without him. Meanwhile, he will be subjected to a regimen designed to break him physically and mentally. Intense physical exertion to the point of exhaustion, a highly restrictive diet, sleep deprivation, and constant psychological pressure. We will strip him of his name, his clothes, his identity. We will break his body to break his will."
She looked at Doris intently. "This brings me to a delicate point. Our methods include corporal punishment. It is a highly effective tool for shattering arrogance and instilling obedience. Do you have any issue with that?"
Doris didn't hesitate. The image of Arthur sneering at her over the dinner table was fresh in her mind. "No," she said, her voice cold and hard. "No problem at all."
"Good," Eleanor nodded. "It is important that you are in agreement. There is one more element to the retreat. During those seven days, you will be assigned a suitor. Their purpose is twofold. First, to provide you with the genuine affection and attention you have been denied. Second, to be seen by Arthur. The suitor can be male or female, whichever you prefer. You are free to pursue a physical relationship with them, or you may simply use their presence to inspire a crippling jealousy and a desperate sense of loss in your husband. We find this is a powerful catalyst for his reprogramming."
Doris felt a strange, illicit thrill at the thought. The sheer, audacious reversal of their roles.
"After the retreat," Eleanor continued, "you will return home. Arthur will be broken and compliant but untrained. This is where the final phase begins. We will assign you a new housekeeper. She will be one of our people. She will be strict and guide you, Doris, on the best way forward with Arthur. She will teach you how to manage him, reward his good behavior, and correct his mistakes. You will be the mistress of your house, and he will be your most devoted, and most frightened, servant."
Eleanor picked up her pen. "We have a great deal of work to do. I need you to write down everything. His daily routine. His passwords. The names of his poker friends. Every secret he has ever told you. Leave nothing out. This is the ammunition we will use to win your war."
