Chapter 8 of 26
While Arthur was being stripped of his identity in a concrete box, Doris was being enveloped in luxury. Elara led her not down but up a grand, sweeping staircase to the top floor of the manor. The door to her suite was a heavy, carved-oak door, and it swung open to reveal a space that was the polar opposite of Arthur's cell.
The room was vast, bathed in the soft, golden light of late afternoon streaming through a huge, unbarred window overlooking the manicured gardens. The floor was covered in thick, plush carpet that swallowed the sound of her footsteps. A king-sized four-poster bed, draped in the finest white linen, dominated one wall. Across from it, a deep, claw-footed bathtub sat before a crackling, already-lit fireplace, with a bottle of champagne chilling in a silver bucket beside it. This was not a room; it was a sanctuary.
"I hope everything is to your satisfaction, Doris," Elara said, her voice a soothing melody. "Your companion for the week will arrive shortly. We took the liberty of drawing you a bath. Is there anything else you need before I leave you?"
"No, this is... perfect," Doris breathed, her eyes wide with disbelief. This was power. Not the crude, barking power Arthur wielded, but a quiet, absolute power commanding comfort and beauty.
Elara bowed slightly and retreated, closing the door softly behind her. Doris walked to the window, her reflection a ghost against the glass. She already looked different. The tension around her eyes had vanished, replaced by a calm, predatory stillness. She turned at a soft knock at the door.
"Come in," she said, her voice firm.
The door opened, and a man stepped inside. He was exactly as she had requested, based on the discreet online profile Eleanor had provided. He was not devastatingly handsome, a deliberate choice. A model or an Adonis would have felt like a fantasy, a betrayal of the reality she was trying to reclaim. This man was ordinary-looking, with kind eyes and a gentle smile. He was perhaps forty, with a lean, toned physique that spoke of regular, disciplined exercise rather than gym-obsessed vanity. He was dressed simply in a linen shirt and trousers. He was, in essence, a plausible alternative. A real man. And should she require it, Eleanor's notes had promised, he was exceptionally skilled in the arts of pleasure.
"Doris," he said, his voice warm and respectful. "My name is Leo. It's a pleasure to finally meet you."
"Leo," she replied, testing the name. It felt safe, normal. "Please, come in."
He moved with an easy grace, his eyes never leaving hers, making her feel like the only person in the room. On the small table beside the champagne bucket sat a single cream-colored card. Doris picked it up, her fingers tracing the elegant embossed logo of the retreat. Beneath it was a short typed note.
"You can view Arthur's progress at any time; simply follow this unique link. Enjoy your stay and make the most of everything."
It was signed, simply, "Eleanor."
A cold, sharp thrill shot through Doris, a stark contrast to the room's warmth. She turned to Leo, who was watching her with an understanding, non-judgmental expression. "Would you excuse me for a moment?" she asked, her voice steady. "There's something I need to see on my tablet."
"Of course," he said softly. "Take your time. I'll be here."
Doris walked to the chaise lounge by the fire, her heart pounding a slow, heavy rhythm. She unlocked her tablet, her fingers trembling as she typed the web address from the card. The screen loaded, revealing a simple, secure login page. She entered the temporary password Eleanor had given her.
The screen changed. It was a live feed. The image was stark, black-and-white, shot from a high corner of the room. It was Arthur's cell. He was pacing the small space like a caged animal, his face a mask of fury and fear. As she watched, the door opened, and two women in simple, severe uniforms entered. One carried a clipboard. Arthur began to shout, gesticulating wildly, but the women were unmoved. One of them said something, her voice too low for the microphone to pick up, and Arthur's shoulders slumped in defeat.
Doris zoomed in slightly on his face. She saw the sweat beading on his forehead and the desperation in his eyes. She saw the man who had treated her like dirt for twenty years, reduced to a helpless, terrified specimen in a lab. A slow, satisfied smile spread across her lips. She looked up from the screen, across the room, to where Leo stood, patiently waiting. He met her gaze and gave her a small, encouraging nod.
She looked back at the tablet, at the image of her broken husband, and felt a surge of power so potent it left her dizzy. Was this really her new reality, her new life? One thing she did know for sure, she was going to enjoy every single second of it.
