Chapter 15 of 21
As he lay curled at the foot of Zara's bed, his body aching but his mind strangely calm, his thoughts drifted back, not to the happy memories with Sarah, but to the beginning of the end. He saw himself as he was then: Paul, the private investigator, cocky and confident, sitting in his office with Karen. He remembered how she had played him, a masterclass in manipulation. She hadn't just seduced him; she had constructed a fantasy tailored perfectly to his ego.
She had started by validating him.
"Paul, what you and Sarah have uncovered... It's brilliant. Truly. But you're out of your depth. This is bigger than some missing persons case. This is a matter of national security."
She had laid it on thick, feeding his sense of self-importance. She had created a world where he wasn't just a PI but a crucial asset for a clandestine intelligence agency. He remembered the thrill that had shot through him. He was James Bond, not some gumshoe from a dingy office. Then she had turned on the charm. It was subtle at first, a lingering touch on his arm, a look of admiration that lasted a second too long. She found excuses to be alone with him, to "discuss strategy" while Sarah was out chasing leads. She built a bubble of intimacy around them, a world where she was the only one who truly understood the stakes and the only one who truly appreciated him.
The seduction itself was a masterpiece of psychological warfare. She hadn't just jumped into bed with him. She had created a scenario where it was his idea, his choice. They were working late one night, the tension between them thick enough to cut with a knife.
"I can't stop thinking about what you're risking," she had said, her voice low with concern. "If they knew... Sarah doesn't see it, but I do. I see the courage it takes."
She had leaned in then, and the kiss had felt inevitable, a reward for his bravery. When she had suggested tying him to the bed, it was framed as a game, a playful exploration of trust and power.
"Let go, Paul," she had whispered, her eyes dark and sincere. "Let someone else be in control for a change. You deserve it." And he had fallen for it, completely. The thought of being dominated by this beautiful, powerful secret agent was the ultimate aphrodisiac.
Once he was tied, once he was helpless, she had fucked him, not just with her body, but with her words. She rode him, her movements slow and deliberate, her voice a hypnotic murmur in his ear.
"You're so strong, Paul. So brave," she had praised, as he strained against his bonds. "Tell me everything. Show me how good you are. Let me help you put some sense back in this world."
And he had, babbling every detail, every lead, every fear, pouring out his entire operation as his body convulsed in pleasure. He had told her everything, convinced he was being a hero, a valuable partner. He remembered the smug, self-satisfied feeling that washed over him as he lay there, spent and trussed up like a turkey. He had done it. He had bedded and befriended a member of the secret service. He had played the game and won.
The memory was no longer just painful; it was a source of profound, soul-crushing shame. He saw himself so clearly now: not a clever hero, but a vain, egotistical fool, so easily manipulated by a pretty face and a few well-chosen words. He had handed them the keys to his own destruction, and he had thanked them for it.
