Chapter 19

The darkness of the cell was absolute, but it was no match for the darkness of his memories. His mind, seeking refuge from the present, fled back to the last time he had felt hope, the last time he had been Paul, the investigator, the partner, the man with a purpose. He was back in Cambridge, the cold night air a welcome shock after the cloying, perfumed atmosphere of the house. He and Sarah had slipped out through a back gate, their hearts pounding, their cameras filled with enough evidence to bring down a government. They moved quickly through the shadowed streets, their footsteps echoing in the silence. They were meeting a contact.

They found her in a narrow, windswept alley behind a row of closed shops. She was a woman of about thirty-five, her face pale and drawn, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and determination. She was a solicitor, Paul remembered; her name was Anna. Her uncle and her brother had both fallen under the Sisterhood's spell. Her brother was one of the men in the kennels, a junior minister with a promising career, now reduced to a whimpering pet. She had no idea where her uncle was, just that he was supposed to be at the house tonight, part of some "inner circle" gathering. She had been trying to get him out for years, and in the process, had uncovered the true, terrifying scope of the organization.

"It's worse than you can imagine," she whispered, her voice trembling as she handed them a thick, bulging folder. "They have people everywhere. Not just politicians. Judges, journalists, CEOs. They don't just control them; they own them. They hollow them out and turn them into their puppets.”

She looked over her shoulder, her eyes darting into the shadows.

"This is everything I have. Financial records, witness statements from people who were too scared to go public, names, dates. Please," she said, her voice cracking, "be quick. And be careful. They don't tolerate loose ends." She squeezed Sarah's arm, a gesture of desperate solidarity, and then melted back into the darkness, leaving them alone with the weight of her findings.

They retreated to their dingy office, the folder spread across their desk like a treasure map. The rest of the night was a blur of coffee-fueled intensity as they cross-referenced Anna's data with their own. The picture that emerged was staggering, a vast, interconnected web of corruption and depravity that stretched across the entire country and beyond. They had it all. They had the proof. They had the names. They had the smoking gun. As the first grey light of dawn filtered through the grimy window, they looked at each other, exhaustion warring with a surge of adrenaline. They had done it. They had the weapon to destroy the Sisterhood.

"You should take it to Karen," Sarah said, her voice firm. "She's the only one who can handle this. She has the resources, the authority. It's too big for us.”

Paul agreed. It made sense. It was the only logical move. He gathered the photos, the notes, and Anna's folder, his hands steady with a sense of righteous purpose. He was no longer just a PI. He was a patriot, a hero delivering the crucial intelligence that would help his country. He drove to the safe office, the folder on the passenger seat beside him, a symbol of their victory.

He felt invincible. He walked into the office, his head held high, ready to be congratulated, ready to join the fight. He had no idea.

No Idea that Karen had nothing to do with any government agency.

No idea that Sarah was destroying everything back at their flat as per Karen’s instructions.

No idea that final, smug, triumphant walk into Karen's office would be his last day of freedom.

No idea that the folder in his hand wasn't a weapon. It was his own life sentence.
