Chapter 9 of 21
The two days blurred into a single, uninterrupted nightmare of pain and submission. When the older woman finally tired of her sport, she re-clipped the leash to his collar. He didn't need to be told what to do. He fell to his hands and knees, his body trembling with exhaustion and a strange, hollow ache. He crawled behind her, his head bowed, across the thick Persian rugs and out of the study. The journey was a mosaic of sensations: the soft whisper of her silk trousers, the faint, clean scent of her skin, the rhythmic click of her heels on the polished wooden hallway floor. He was a pet, being led to its kennel. The thought no longer brought shame; it brought a flicker of relief.
She led him into a bedroom that was as grand and imposing as she was. A massive, four-poster bed dominated the room, but her attention was directed to a corner, where a tall, black cage stood. It wasn't like the crude metal box in the other room. This one was made of ornate, black-painted iron bars and furnished with what looked like a thick velvet cushion and a soft faux-fur blanket. It was a gilded prison, a comfortable cage. She unhooked the leash and pointed a single, elegant finger inside. He crawled in without hesitation, the thick cushion a welcome relief for his battered body. She swung the door shut, and the lock clicked with a soft, definitive thud. She didn't look back. She simply walked towards the bathroom, leaving him alone in the dim light of the bedside lamps. The cushion's comfort was overwhelming. His body, pushed far beyond its limits, surrendered. His eyes grew heavy, and he sank into a deep, dreamless sleep.
But the sleep wasn't dreamless for long. His mind, untethered from the constant, sharp edge of pain, began to drift through the wreckage of his memories. He saw the party again, the faces of the powerful men debasing themselves, but this time, the scene was different. He wasn't just an observer. He was with someone. Another woman. She was crouched beside him behind a heavy velvet curtain, her own camera in hand. He could feel the warmth of her shoulder against his, smell the faint, citrusy scent of her perfume.
"Got him," she whispered, her voice a low, excited murmur. "The Commissioner. This is gold, Paul."
The name hit him like a physical blow. Paul. He was Paul. The name was a key, unlocking a door in his mind. He was a private investigator. And the woman beside him... she was his partner. Her name was Sarah. He could see her face now, sharp, intelligent, with a determined glint in her eyes as she captured the damning evidence.
The memory shifted. He and Sarah were in a cramped office, surrounded by whiteboards and newspaper clippings. The name "The Sisterhood" was written in the center of the main board, circled in red. They were a shadowy organization, a cabal of impossibly influential women who had insinuated themselves into every level of the English government, the judiciary, and the police force. But that was just the public face. Their tendrils went deeper, into international politics, corporate espionage, and a much darker side of organized crime. They didn't just wield power; they cultivated it, using blackmail, coercion, and the kind of depraved secrets he had witnessed to control their assets. He and Sarah had been hired to investigate the disappearance of a politician, and they had stumbled onto the Sisterhood's trail. They had gotten too close. He remembered the fear in Sarah's eyes the last time he saw her, the urgency in her voice.
"If they get you, Paul, they won't just kill you. They'll unmake you." He had laughed it off, confident in his skills. Now, the memory of his own arrogance was a bitter taste in his mouth. He was Paul. And he was being unmade.
