Chapter 2 of 8
Consciousness returned to him in broken, nauseating fragments. The first assault was the smell — an overwhelming, thick stench of wet rot, black mildew, old urine soaked deep into the concrete, and the sour, sickly-sweet reek of human shit left to ferment for months. The metallic bite of rust hung heavy in the damp air.
The cold hit next, sinking into his bones like needles. The floor beneath him was slimy, uneven, and covered in grit and tiny shards of broken glass that dug painfully into his bare knees and shins. His clothes had been completely stripped away while he was unconscious, leaving him naked and vulnerable. Heavy, rusted steel manacles — antique prison chains — locked around his wrists, ankles, and throat. The links were deliberately short, forcing him into a permanent, painful hunch. Every small movement ground the rough metal deeper into his raw skin.
A single bare bulb swung lazily on a frayed cord above, casting long, sickly shadows across walls glistening with black mold and dark, crusty stains that could have been blood, shit, or worse. Dented metal buckets lay overturned in the corners, their spilled contents dried into foul brown puddles. Fat rats skittered boldly across the floor, unafraid of the new arrival.
Then came the sound of boots — slow, deliberate, heavy — descending the old wooden stairs that creaked like breaking bones.
