Chapter 15 of 18
The steel door groaned open down the hall. Kaylah didn’t flinch, just curled tighter on the thin mattress, her body humming with a raw ache as the chemical fog lifted. Her skin remembered what her mind refused: the weight of him, the slickness between her thighs, the slow seep of his release drying on the sheet.
The world had narrowed to this cell and the man they called her boyfriend. A Black man whose name she had just recently learned, whose body she knew too well. Her faith, her marriage—all of it felt like a story about someone else. She was just a body waiting—for the next high, the next violation.
She pulled the thin sheet to her chin—a useless gesture—and waited for Torres’s boots on stone, for the black box with its “local love potion.” She was done fighting.
Torres paused in the cell entrance, the orderly behind him in a white smock holding the familiar black box. In the next cell, the pale man with sunken eyes who once was her husband gripped the bars. He said something—a name, maybe—but she barely registered him. Just another prisoner watching. She turned her face away from his stare and toward her Black boyfriend, Reggie, beside her in the bed instead.
Torres followed her glance, then looked at her red panties discarded beside her crumpled prison uniform on the floor and smiled. The technique never failed, even on the most resistant ones. After three weeks of drugs and relentless attention from her Black boyfriend, the once-proper Señorita Kaylah had stopped fighting it. Defeat looked like lace on cold stone.
“Time for some more of our local love potion, señorita,” Torres said, his voice sickingly sweet and tender.
A tremor started in her hands. She swallowed hard, the craving a physical ache deep in her belly.
“Please,” she whispered, the word scraping out. “Captain Torres… I’m not protected. Do you have… something? For him and me?” She couldn’t bring herself to say ‘condom’, couldn’t look at Reggie beside her in the bed.
Torres’s mouth stretched into a thin, cruel line. “A regrettable oversight, señorita. You and your boyfriend have been… very active. If you wish to avoid complications, you should be more prudent. We don’t supply condoms—they numb the feeling, get in the way of real connection. But there are alternatives. Have him withdraw, or perhaps you could try other avenues. I’ve been keeping track of your cycle. It's your fertile period.”
Unnoticed by Kaylah, the orderly set a tube of lubricant by the cell’s sink to assist with using one of the other avenues Torres spoke about.
Torres's grin widened. “Now that you know your boyfriend inside and out, Señorita Kaylah, what do you think of his manhood?”
The words landed where he meant them to. She sighed and turned her back to him, the sheet pulled over her shoulders.
She could feel his stare on the back of her neck. She shut her eyes against it. The room held its own kind of quiet, the kind before thunder.
“Don’t be embarrassed,” Torres went on, his voice clean and unhurried. “I’ve seen the size of your ex-husband when he jerks off watching you two. A pathetic little man. I knew once you got used to your Black boyfriend’s size—once you’d slept with him a while—you’d come around. It’s natural. White girls like you end up preferring a superior Black man. There’s no shame in it.”
She pressed her eyelids together harder. Torres reminded her how once she’d been a woman of faith and vows; now they had taken everything that set her apart. She hated the drugs—what they did to her body, what they made her feel—and still some part of her wanted more with every passing minute. Her face burned at his taunts.
Was it true? Had she grown accustomed to Reggie—to the drag as she stretched around him, his hard muscles pinning her down, the flood of pleasure when he forced an orgasm out of her? Guilt came for her in waves she couldn’t reason with.
A fragment of memory surfaced—her boyfriend’s whisper close to her ear.“Make me hard, baby,” he had said into the shadows, his nude body straddling hers.
“We just finished. Not again, baby,” she had answered, everything dim.
“Come on, baby. You know what you supposed to do for me.”
In that moment, her husband had vanished from her mind entirely
“Alright, baby,” she had replied, reaching down. Her fingers found him already half-hard, the skin loose and warm.
The weight of him in her hand was something her body had catalogued without her permission—the specific heat, the give of it.
She registered the texture of him against her palm the way you register a familiar door handle in the dark, without needing to think.
“That real nice, baby. Now tell me what you suppose to do.”
“Make you hard,” she had mumbled.
“And?”
“Love you…put you in my pussy...take your entire Black cock,” she repeated, feeling him grow heavier in her grip.
“You making me hard, baby. Now make sure you wet.”
She remembered dragging the smooth head of his cock across her clit—her sex growing wetter. Then guiding his shaft inside, wrapping her arms around him…
Another memory: him withdrawing before he finished, bringing his glistening cock to her mouth instead. She worked his shaft with both hands while she swallowed from him, his taste familiar.
Even drugged, she could not have felt that way—could not have done those things. The thought horrified her as she sobered more.
Torres’s laugh cut the air. “Despierta, puta.” His voice was a low snarl. “Your pathetic ex-husband is weeping at the bars again. He wants to whisper his little prayers before your next dose of medicine ruins his chance.” He gestured toward the red lace panties.“Put those on first. You're a mess, and you look high as hell.”
Her eyes flew open. She sat up too fast, the sheet sticking to her thighs and belly, cold and slick. The smell of sex rose from the fabric. “Please,” she stammered, “let me wash first.” She could feel it drying on her skin—his, hers—a film of shame. It was a small thing to ask, but it was all she had left.
