Chapter 20 of 51
She sleeps with her cheek on the cold concrete, her body curled into itself, and dreams of nothing she can remember when she wakes.
The light is the same. The walls are the same. The silence presses in, indistinguishable from the moment she closed her eyes. She doesn't know if she slept for hours or minutes. Her body feels heavy, her limbs loose, the kind of deep rest that comes after exhaustion has burned through every reserve.
She sits up. Her neck is stiff from the concrete. Her ribs ache when she breathes. She reaches for the water, drinks, and the coolness spreading through her chest is the only sensation that tells her she's still in her body.
She doesn't know how long she waits.
The door opens.
Leila stands in the threshold. No tray today. No stool. She steps inside, closes the door, and stands with her back to it, her arms crossed.
"Stand up."
Serena stands.
"Dress."
Serena crosses to where her clothes lie folded on the cot — the black sports bra, the high-waisted shorts. She pulls them on. The fabric feels strange against her skin after hours of bare air.
"Follow me."
Leila opens the door. She steps into the corridor without looking back.
Serena hesitates. Then follows.
---
The corridor is narrow, white-walled, lit by the same harsh fixtures. They pass closed doors — three, four, five — before Leila stops at one and opens it.
Inside: a bathroom. White tile. A shower with a glass door. A toilet. A sink with a mirror.
"You have fifteen minutes," Leila says. "Hot water. Soap. Towel behind the door. When you're done, come back to the room."
She turns and walks away.
Serena stands in the doorway of the bathroom. The mirror shows her own face — hollow-eyed, hair matted, a cut on her lower lip where she bit it in her sleep. She looks like someone who's been in a cage.
She steps inside. She closes the door.
The shower is the first hot water she's felt since Montenegro.
She stands under it longer than fifteen minutes. No one comes to stop her. The steam rises around her, the water beating against her shoulders, her back, the fading bruises on her thighs. She washes her hair with the soap that smells of olive oil and something floral. She scrubs her skin until it's pink.
When she steps out, wrapped in a thin towel, she feels like a different woman.
She walks back to the white room.
Leila is sitting on the floor in the center, cross-legged, waiting.
"Better," she says. "Sit."
Serena sits. Her hair is still wet, dripping onto the concrete.
Leila watches her. Her eyes are calm, measuring, the same patient gaze she's worn since the moment they met.
"I want to talk about the night in Budapest," Leila says. "The evaluation. Irina. Claude. What happened after they tied you."
Serena's stomach tightens. "Why?"
"Because it's the first time someone made you beg. I want to understand what that felt like."
"I remember what happened."
"I know you remember the events." Leila leans forward. "I want to know what it felt like in your body. When Irina knelt behind you. When you felt the silicone press against you. When she pushed inside. What did your body do?"
Serena's hands are fists in her lap. "It—" She stops. Swallows. "It resisted."
"At first. And then?"
And then it betrayed you. The thought surfaces unbidden, bitter and familiar.
"It responded," she says.
"How?"
"I got wet."
Leila nods. "And when she made you come — because she did, you know she did — what did that feel like?"
"Like being hollowed out."
"Good." Leila's hands rest on her knees. "That's the closest you've come to honesty about it."
She reaches into her pocket and pulls out a strip of black cloth — silk, perhaps, or satin. She holds it up.
"I'm going to blindfold you. Then I'm going to touch you. I want you to tell me what you feel — not what you think about it, not what it means, just the physical sensation. Do you understand?"
Serena's pulse quickens. "Yes."
"Then close your eyes."
Serena closes her eyes. The silk wraps around her head, cool and smooth, blocking out the light. The world narrows to sound and sensation — her own breathing, the rustle of Leila's clothes, the distant hum of the light fixture.
"I'm going to touch your face first," Leila says. "Tell me what you feel."
Fingers on her cheek. Light. Warm.
"Your fingers. They're—" She stops. "Soft. Warm."
"Good. Keep going."
The fingers trace her cheekbone, the bridge of her nose, the curve of her jaw. They're unhurried, deliberate, mapping her face the way a blind person reads braille.
"Your jaw is tight," Leila says. "Unclench."
Serena unclenches her jaw.
"Better. Now your throat."
The fingers find her throat — not gripping, not threatening, just resting against her pulse. She can feel it beating against Leila's palm, fast and irregular.
"What do you feel?"
"Your hand. My pulse."
"What else?"
Fear, she thinks. Want. The two things I can't separate anymore.
"Warm," she says. "Your hand is warm."
Leila's hand slides down — her collarbone, her sternum, stopping at the hollow between her breasts.
"I'm going to touch your body now. Keep telling me what you feel."
Her hand moves lower. Her palm cups Serena's breast through the sports bra, her thumb tracing the curve. Serena's breath catches.
"Your hand," she says. Her voice is thinner now. "On my chest."
"Good. What else?"
"Pressure."
"Where?"
"Where your thumb is. Circling."
"Circling what?"
Serena's throat tightens. "My nipple."
"Can you feel it through the fabric?"
"Yes."
"Is it hard?"
Yes. The word sticks in her throat.
"Say it," Leila says. "There's no one here but us. Say what you feel."
"Yes."
"Say the words."
Serena's hands grip her own knees. "My nipple is hard. I can feel it through the bra."
"Good." Leila's thumb presses harder, circling slowly. "That's the first honest thing your body has told me today."
She withdraws her hand.
Serena feels the absence like a wound.
"I'm going to touch you between your legs now," Leila says. "I want you to tell me what you feel. Not what you think you should feel. What you actually feel."
Her hand settles on Serena's inner thigh. Serena flinches — the muscle memory of Katarina's knee, Katarina's fingers. But Leila's touch doesn't hurt. It's just there, warm, patient, waiting for Serena to relax.
"I feel your hand," Serena says. Her voice shakes. "On my thigh."
"Good. Is it uncomfortable?"
"No."
"Is it something else?"
Yes, she thinks. It's something I don't want to name.
"It's—" She stops. Swallows.
"Take your time."
"It's what I needed someone to do to me in Budapest," Serena says. The words come out raw, scraped from somewhere she didn't know she was reaching. "Before. After. During. Someone to touch me like I was a person, not a—"
She stops.
"A what?"
"Not a thing they were breaking."
Leila's hand is still on her thigh. Warm. Still.
"That's the most honest thing you've said since you arrived," Leila says.
Her hand moves higher. Her fingers find the seam of Serena's shorts, rest there.
"I'm going to touch you now," she says. "Not to hurt you. Not to punish you. Just to remind you that your body can feel something other than pain and fear."
Her fingers press through the fabric, finding the heat beneath.
"Tell me what you feel."
"Your fingers. Through the shorts."
"Where exactly?"
"On my—" She stops. Her face burns.
"Say it."
"On my cunt."
"Good. Is it wet?"
Yes. The word is there, on her tongue, waiting.
"Yes."
Leila's fingers press harder, moving in slow circles. Serena's hips shift, her breath quickening.
"I'm going to put my hand inside your shorts," Leila says. "Tell me if you want me to stop."
Her fingers slide beneath the waistband. They find skin, then heat, then wetness. She doesn't enter — she just rests there, her palm cupping Serena through her underwear, her fingers still.
"Tell me what you feel."
"Your hand. My—" She gasps. "The wetness."
"Is it yours?"
"Yes."
"Good. That's your body telling the truth."
Leila's fingers move — not much, just a shift, her thumb pressing against Serena's clit through the damp fabric. Serena's hips buck. A sound escapes her — high, thin, embarrassing.
"I'm going to make you come now," Leila says. Her voice is calm, conversational. "Not because I want anything from you. Not because you've earned it. Because your body needs to remember what pleasure feels like without pain attached to it."
Her thumb works in steady circles. Serena's hands grip the concrete, her head falling back, her breath coming in ragged pulls.
"I don't—" she starts.
"You don't what?"
"I don't want to—"
"Yes you do." Leila's voice is patient. "Your body wants this. Your mind is the only thing fighting it. Let go, Elise. Just for this moment. Let go."
The orgasm builds slow — not the sharp, forced peak Katarina ripped from her, but something warmer, deeper, rising from a place she'd sealed shut years ago. She fights it. Holds it back. Her jaw clenches, her hands white-knuckled on the concrete.
"Let go," Leila says again. Her thumb presses harder. "You're safe. You're not being punished. Just let go."
The wave breaks.
Serena comes with a sound she doesn't recognize — not a cry, not a sob, something in between, something that's been waiting in her chest for years. Her body shakes, her hips rolling against Leila's hand, her head falling forward.
Leila holds her through it. Her fingers slow, gentle, until Serena's trembling stops.
She withdraws her hand.
The blindfold comes off.
Serena blinks in the harsh light. Her face is wet. She doesn't know when she started crying.
Leila sits in front of her, her hand resting on her own knee, her expression unreadable.
"That's enough for today," she says. "You can shower again if you want. Food will come in an hour."
She stands.
Serena doesn't move. She can still feel the ghost of Leila's hand between her legs, the warmth of her palm, the impossible kindness of being brought to pleasure without a single word of threat.
This is the method, Leila said.
And Serena is only now understanding how much more dangerous it is than pain.
