Chapter 21

She lies on the cot and stares at the ceiling and tries not to think about Leila's hand.

The orgasm is still in her body, a low hum beneath her skin, a warmth that won't fade. She presses her thighs together and feels the ghost of pressure, the memory of fingers that didn't hurt her, didn't take from her, didn't leave her hollow.

This is the method.

She tries to reconstruct it — the sequence, the questions, the way Leila guided her toward honesty like a hand on a back, gentle but unyielding. It was a technique. She knows that. Leila is extracting information the way a surgeon extracts a tumor — cleanly, precisely, with instruments designed to minimize damage to surrounding tissue.

But knowing it doesn't stop her body from wanting more.

---

She eats when the food comes. She drinks the water. She sleeps.

When she wakes, the door is open.

Leila stands in the threshold, holding a small ceramic bowl and a cloth. She steps inside and sits on the floor, cross-legged, and gestures for Serena to do the same.

"I brought oil," she says. "Olive. From the valley."

She sets the bowl between them. The oil catches the light, pale gold.

"I'm going to touch you again," Leila says. "But this time, I want you to touch me back."

Serena's chest tightens. "Why?"

"Because submission isn't just about receiving. It's about choosing to give. I want you to choose, Elise. I want you to put your hands on me because you want to, not because I'm taking something from you."

Serena's hands stay in her lap.

"You don't have to," Leila says. "We can sit here in silence for another hour, another day. I have time. But I think a part of you wants to know what it feels like to touch someone without it being a negotiation, a transaction, a prelude to violence."

She dips her fingers in the oil. The scent rises — green, grassy, clean.

"Come here."

Serena shifts forward. Her knees touch Leila's knees.

Leila's oiled hands rise to Serena's face. She cups her jaw, her thumbs tracing Serena's cheekbones, the bridge of her nose, the line of her brow. The oil warms against her skin, smooth and strange.

"Your turn," Leila says. "Put your hands on me."

Serena's hands rise. They hover, uncertain. Then they settle on Leila's shoulders — the cotton of her shirt, the warmth of her body beneath.

"Good," Leila says. "Now close your eyes."

She closes her eyes.

Leila's hands work her face — her temples, her jaw, the hinge of her jaw where tension has settled like concrete. Her thumbs press in small circles, releasing, softening. Serena's head drops forward. Her breath comes slower.

"Your hands," Leila says. "Don't stop."

Serena's hands move — from Leila's shoulders to her neck, her thumbs tracing the column of her throat. She feels Leila swallow under her touch. Feels the pulse there, steady and calm.

"Good," Leila says again. "Now I'm going to undress you. I want you to keep your hands on me while I do it."

Her fingers find the hem of Serena's sports bra. She lifts it, slow, the fabric peeling away from Serena's skin. The air is cool on her chest, her stomach, her ribs. She shivers.

Leila sets the bra aside. Her oiled hands return to Serena's shoulders, her collarbone, the slope of her breasts. She traces without urgency, mapping territory she's already learned.

"Keep your hands on me," she says.

Serena's hands slide to Leila's waist. She feels the shape of her — compact, dense, muscle layered under skin. She's never touched Leila before. She's never touched anyone without an agenda.

Leila's hands move lower. They find Serena's waist, her hips, the waistband of her shorts. She hooks her thumbs and pulls them down.

"Lift your hips."

Serena lifts. The shorts slide away. She's naked now, sitting cross-legged in the white room, her hands on Leila's waist, Leila's oiled hands on her thighs.

"Put your hands on my shoulders," Leila says. "And lean back."

Serena leans back. Her weight shifts to her hands, her chest open, her thighs parted.

Leila's hands slide up her thighs. Slow. Oiled. Her thumbs press into the muscle, working the tension that's lived there for weeks. Serena's breath catches.

"Tell me what you feel."

"Your hands. The oil."

"Where?"

"On my thighs. Moving up."

"Where are they now?"

Serena's throat is dry. "At the top of my thighs."

"Inside or outside?"

"Inside."

Leila's thumbs press higher, finding the crease where thigh meets hip. She works in slow circles, her touch firm, unhurried.

"Tell me when you want me to touch you," Leila says. "Not if. When."

Serena's jaw tightens. Her body is screaming for it — the heat between her legs, the ache, the memory of how good it felt to come without pain.

"I want—" she starts.

"Say it."

"I want you to touch me."

"Where?"

The word sticks. Then breaks free. "Between my legs."

"Good." Leila's hand slides higher, her palm settling over Serena's cunt. She doesn't move. Just rests there, warm, grounding. "Is this what you wanted?"

"Yes."

"What else do you want?"

Serena's breathing is shallow. Her hips want to move, to press into Leila's hand, but she holds still.

"I want you to—"

"To what?"

"To make me come again."

Leila's mouth curves. "You're learning to ask."

Her fingers begin to move — slow, deliberate, tracing through the wetness that's gathered there. She finds Serena's clit and circles it with the same patience she's shown all morning, the same unhurried attention.

Serena's head falls back. Her hands grip her own thighs. She doesn't fight this time. She lets the sensation build, lets it rise through her body like water filling a basin.

"That's it," Leila says. "Don't hold it back."

The orgasm crests — slower than the first time, deeper, spreading through her pelvis and up into her stomach, her chest, her throat. She makes a sound, low and long, her hips rolling against Leila's hand.

Leila works her through it, drawing out every pulse, every tremor.

When Serena's body stills, Leila withdraws her hand. She wipes it on the cloth beside her.

"Was that different from the first time?"

Serena's eyes are still closed. Her chest rises and falls. "Yes."

"How?"

"It was—" She searches for the word. "Mine."

Leila nods. "That's the difference between taking and receiving."

She stands. She crosses to the door.

"Rest. Tonight, I'll bring you dinner. We'll talk about what happens next."

"What happens next?"

Leila turns. Her face is unreadable in the harsh light.

"Viktor wants to see you. He's coming to the facility in three days. By the time he arrives, I need to know whether you're ready to perform for him — or whether I need to keep you here longer."

She leaves.

The door closes.

Serena sits naked on the cold concrete, her skin still slick with oil, her body still humming with the aftershocks of her own pleasure.

Three days.

She doesn't know if she's counting down to freedom or to something worse.

---

She doesn't see Leila for the rest of the day.

The food comes — bread, olives, cheese, a small bowl of soup — delivered by a silent woman in gray who doesn't meet Serena's eyes. The water is refreshed. The bucket behind the screen is emptied.

Serena sleeps. She dreams of nothing. She wakes to the same white light, the same silence.

The door opens.

It's not Leila.

Nadia stands in the threshold. Her face is pale, her scarred hand flexing at her side. She looks thinner than she did in Montenegro, the hollows of her cheeks deeper.

"Serena."

Serena sits up. "Nadia. What—"

"I have two minutes." Nadia steps inside, leaves the door cracked behind her. "Leila doesn't know I'm here. If she finds out, she'll separate us completely."

She crosses the room in three strides. Kneels in front of Serena.

"Listen to me. Viktor arrives in three days. He's bringing Madame Korvin and Irina. They're going to watch whatever Leila has planned for you."

Serena's stomach drops. "All of them?"

"All of them." Nadia's voice is low, urgent. "This isn't training anymore. This is a showcase. Petrov wants to prove to his network that you've been fully broken. That you're not a threat anymore."

"What does that mean for you?"

Nadia's jaw tightens. "It means I'm being transferred back to Budapest after the showcase. Leila has no use for me here. And Madame Korvin doesn't take back damaged goods."

She reaches into her pocket. Pulls out a folded piece of paper. Presses it into Serena's hand.

"There's a number on this. A man in Marrakech. He owes me a debt from my SRI days. If you can get to a phone, call him. He'll extract you."

Serena stares at the paper. "Why are you doing this?"

"Why do you think?" Nadia's eyes are dark, unreadable. "Because you're the first person in two years who looked at me like I was still a person. Because I've watched you get up every time they put you down. And because I don't want to watch you stay down."

She stands. She crosses back to the door.

"Three days," she says. "If you're going to run, run before the showcase."

She slips through the door. It closes behind her.

Serena sits alone. The paper is warm in her hand.

She unfolds it. A number. Ten digits. No name.

She memorizes it. Then she tears the paper into tiny pieces and swallows them, one by one, the ink bitter on her tongue.

Three days.

The countdown has begun.
