Chapter 22

"Tomorrow morning. A car will take you to Casablanca. A private plane to Geneva." Viktor finishes his wine, sets the glass down precisely. "Leila will accompany you for the first forty-eight hours. To ensure the transition is... smooth."

He stands. The meeting is over. He doesn't offer his hand.

"Rest tonight. You'll need your strength."

He crosses to the door, pauses, looks back at Serena. His eyes are flat, the gray of winter sea, holding nothing back.

"And Serena — I've been watching you since Dubrovnik. I know exactly what you're capable of. Don't think about running."

He leaves.

Madame Korvin rises, smoothing her cream silk. She pauses beside Serena's chair, close enough that Serena can smell her perfume — jasmine, old money, the same scent she wore in Budapest.

"You've grown, my dear." Her voice is warm, almost kind. "Leila's done good work with you. I do hope we get to visit again after Geneva."

She follows Viktor out.

Irina lingers. She stands in the doorway, her gray eyes finding Serena's. She doesn't speak. She doesn't need to. The look says everything: I knew you'd end up here. I told you so.

She leaves.

The door closes.

Serena sits alone in the receiving room, the fire unlit, the mountains dark beyond the windows. Leila's hand finds her shoulder — warm, present.

"Come," Leila says. "I'll help you prepare."

---

Leila's hand is warm on her shoulder. Grounding. Present.

Serena doesn't shrug it off. She doesn't lean into it either. She sits in the burgundy dress, the fabric heavy against her skin, and watches the darkening mountains through the window.

"I don't need help," she says.

"I know." Leila's voice is quiet. "But I'm offering it anyway."

She waits. Serena stands. The dress falls to her ankles as she rises, and she follows Leila out of the receiving room, down the corridor, past the white room where she spent her first days, past the bathroom where she showered, past the room with the mattress where Leila held her.

They stop at a door Serena hasn't seen before. Leila opens it.

Inside: a bedroom. A proper bed with white linens. A window that looks out at the mountains, the last light fading to purple. A basin of water on a low table, steam rising. A towel folded beside it. A clean set of clothes — black trousers, a white blouse, simple and new.

"Wash," Leila says. "Dress. Sleep. I'll wake you an hour before dawn."

She turns to leave.

"Leila."

Leila stops. Doesn't turn.

"Why are you helping me?"

The silence stretches. Leila's hand rests on the doorframe.

"Because Viktor thinks he's breaking you for his purposes," she says. "And I want you broken for mine."

She leaves.

The door closes softly.

---

Serena washes. The water is warm, scented with something floral — jasmine, perhaps, or the same perfume Madame Korvin wore. She scrubs her skin, her hair, the spaces between her fingers where the oil from Leila's hands has dried. She dresses in the clean clothes. The fabric is soft, new, smelling of cotton and sunlight.

She lies on the bed. The mattress is soft. The pillows smell of lavender.

She doesn't sleep.

She lies awake, staring at the ceiling, and runs through every scenario she can imagine for Geneva. The client. The performance. The moment when she might have to choose between compliance and Nadia's life.

The number is still in her memory. Ten digits. A debt in Marrakech.

She doesn't know when she'll get to a phone. She doesn't know if the number will still work. But she holds it in her mind like a talisman, like a thread she can follow out of this maze.

---

A hand on her shoulder. Gentle.

Serena opens her eyes. She hadn't realized she'd closed them.

Leila stands beside the bed. The room is dark, the sky beyond the window just beginning to lighten — a deep blue, the first edge of gold at the horizon.

"It's time."

Serena sits up. Her body is stiff, her eyes gritty. She hasn't slept, not really, but her mind has been somewhere else — a gray space between waking and dreaming.

She stands. Follows Leila through the dark corridors.

The facility is quiet. The stone floors cold under her bare feet. They pass the receiving room, the courtyard window where the olive tree is a dark silhouette, the white room where she spent her first days.

At the entrance, a figure waits.

Nadia.

She stands by the door, her arms crossed, her scarred hand flexing at her side. She's dressed in the same gray clothes she wore on the journey from Budapest, her cropped hair silver in the dim light.

Their eyes meet.

Nadia doesn't speak. She crosses the space between them in three strides and takes Serena's face in her hands. Her palms are rough, calloused, warm. She holds Serena's gaze for a long moment — something passing between them that doesn't need words.

Then she kisses her forehead. Brief. Fierce.

She steps back.

"Don't let them win," she says.

It's the first time Serena has heard her voice crack.

She turns. She walks back into the dark corridor, her footsteps fading, until the silence swallows her.

Serena stands at the threshold. The door is open. The mountain air flows in, cold and thin, carrying the scent of cedar and earth.

Leila stands beside her.

"Ready?"

Serena looks out at the dark valley, the road that will take her down to Casablanca, the plane that will carry her to Geneva, the client who will believe she's broken.

She doesn't know if she's ready.

But she steps through the door anyway.
