Chapter 14 of 23
The rain was a miserable, persistent drizzle, turning the grey tarmac into a shimmering, slick mirror. It plastered Victoria’s cheap blouse to her skin, the thin fabric offering no protection against the chill. Her makeup, so thickly applied, ran in black and pink rivers down her cheeks, making her look like a grotesque, weeping clown. The ridiculously high heels sank into the damp grass verge beside the bus stop, forcing her to stand on an uneven, precarious slope. Every car that splashed past sent a wave of dirty water over her feet, another small indignity in a day that had already defined the word. She was a monument to misery, a sodden, pathetic doll abandoned by the roadside.
An old, dark green Jaguar drove past, its engine a low, refined purr. It slowed slightly as it passed her, the driver a blur behind the rain-streaked windshield. It continued down the road, disappearing around a bend. Ten minutes later, as Victoria was shivering so violently her teeth were chattering, the same Jaguar came back. It drove past again, this time a little slower. She watched it go, a flicker of something other than despair—perhaps curiosity—stirring in her chest. It returned a third time, pulling up a few meters ahead of her with a soft sigh of expensive brakes.
The passenger door swung open. A woman leaned across the seats. She was in her late fifties, with a handsome, weathered face, her silver hair cut in a short, practical style. She was wearing a waxed jacket over a jumper, and there was a faint, earthy scent of horse and leather that clung to her even from a distance.
"For God's sake, girl, get in," the woman said, her voice a warm, slightly brusque alto. "You'll catch your death out there."
Victoria hesitated for a moment, the ingrained suspicion warring with her desperate need for warmth and shelter.
"I'm not a bloody axe murderer," the woman said with a wry smile. "Just on my way home from riding my horse. You're soaked. Get in."
Victoria stumbled forward, her heels catching in the grass, and climbed into the plush leather seat. The warmth inside the car was a blissful, overwhelming embrace. The door closed with a solid, expensive thud, shutting out the sound of the rain.
"Mildred," the woman said, extending a hand.
"Victoria," she replied, her voice a hoarse whisper.
"Well, Victoria," Mildred said, pulling back out onto the road. "You look like you've been through a war. Where are you headed?"
"Home," Victoria said, giving the general area.
"Where's home ?" Asked Mildred
Victoria told her
Mildred said. "Look, my place is just on the way. You can't go home looking like that. Come to mine, get a hot shower, and dry your clothes. Have a cup of tea. It's no trouble at all."
Victoria wanted to refuse. Every instinct screamed at her to be wary, to remember the last time a stranger had offered her kindness. But the thought of a hot shower, of being warm and dry for even a few minutes, was too powerful a temptation. "Okay," she whispered. "Thank you."
Mildred's house was a beautiful, old stone cottage set back from the road, surrounded by sprawling, well-tended gardens. It smelled of woodsmoke and beeswax and old books. It was the antithesis of the cold, modern minimalism of Richard and Akiko's apartment.
"Upstairs, first on the left," Mildred said, pointing up a wooden staircase. "Towels are in the cupboard. I'll put the kettle on."
Victoria stumbled up the stairs and into the bathroom. It was large and old-fashioned, with a claw-foot tub and a hot water tank that gurgled reassuringly. She stripped off her wet, cheap clothes with a sense of relief, leaving them in a puddle on the floor. She stepped into the shower, the hot water a cascade of pure heaven, washing away the chill, the rain, and the grime of her journey. For the first time in what felt like an eternity, she was alone. She stood under the steaming spray, her eyes closed, and let the water beat down on her, feeling the tension begin to seep out of her aching muscles.
She was so lost in the sensation that she didn't hear the bathroom door open. Mildred came in to drop some more towels on the closed lid of the toilet. She didn't say anything, but her eyes fell on the two things Victoria couldn’t remove. The black leather collar and the gleaming, intricate silver chastity belt. She saw them, and her expression hardened, a flicker of something unreadable—with a sly smile, she quietly backed out of the room, closing the door behind her.
When Victoria emerged, feeling almost human again, she found a thick, warm robe laid out for her. She put it on, cinching it tightly around her waist, and walked into the living room. A roaring fire crackled in a large stone hearth. Mildred was sitting on a deep, comfortable-looking sofa, two steaming mugs of tea on the table in front of her.
"Feeling better?" Mildred asked, her voice gentle.
Victoria just nodded, sinking into the armchair opposite her.
They sat in silence for a moment, the only sound the crackling of the fire. Mildred looked at her, her gaze compassionate and direct. "I saw them, you know," she said softly. "The collar and the... other thing."
Victoria flinched, her hand flying to her throat, as if she could hide the evidence.
"It's alright," Mildred said. "You don't have to talk about it."
But something in Mildred's calm, non-judgmental demeanor broke through the dam of Victoria's carefully constructed defenses. The tears she had been holding back for weeks, for months, began to fall. At first, they were silent, but then a sob escaped her, a raw, ragged sound. And then the whole story came pouring out of her, a torrent of words and pain. She told Mildred everything. From the start. About her affairs, how he had always taken her back, how he had always forgiven her. She told her about the last time, how things had changed, how he had changed; he was colder. She told her about Akiko, about the weekend of punishment, about the slow, systematic stripping away of her identity, her will, her soul. She told her how she had allowed it to happen, how she had chosen to stay, how she had fallen deeper and deeper. She told her about the party, about being used by strangers, about the bus stop, about Yumi. She talked until she was hoarse, until there were no more tears left, until she was an empty, hollowed-out shell.
Mildred listened to it all without interrupting, her face a mask of quiet fury and profound sympathy. When Victoria was finally finished, she just sat there, her head in her hands, a wreck of a woman.
Mildred got up and sat beside her on the armchair, putting her arm around her shoulders. "Oh, you poor, sweet girl," she murmured, pulling her close. "Come, sit by the fire."
She led Victoria to the plush rug in front of the hearth. Victoria lay down, her head resting in Mildred's lap, her body curled up like a child. Mildred stroked her hair, her touch gentle and soothing, telling her it would be alright, that she was safe now. The warmth of the fire, the comforting weight of Mildred's hand on her head, the deep, steady rhythm of her breathing—it was all a balm on her wounded soul.
As she was comforting her, Mildred's fingers trailed down to the collar. She slipped her finger through the metal ring and pulled on it gently, so that Victoria was forced to lift her head. Their eyes met. Mildred bent down and kissed her, a gentle, questioning kiss on the lips. It wasn't like the demanding, punishing kisses she was used to. It was soft, warm, and full of a tenderness that made Victoria's heart ache.
Victoria responded, a desperate, hungry need rising up inside her. She kissed Mildred back, her lips parting, a silent plea for more. What started as a gentle comfort quickly deepened into something else, something more profound. They ended up making love there on the rug in front of the fire, Mildred's hands and mouth exploring Victoria's body with a reverence and a care that she had forgotten was possible. She was treated not as an object, but as a person, as a woman who deserved pleasure.
But the chastity belt was a constant, cruel barrier. Victoria could feel the arousal building, a desperate, frantic need, but she was trapped, her own body a prison. She began to sob in frustration, a sound of pure anguish.
"Shhh," Mildred whispered, her lips brushing against Victoria's ear. "It's alright. I've got you."
She reached over to the side table and picked up a handheld massager, one of those large, wand-like devices used for sore muscles. She turned it on, a low, powerful hum filling the room. She looked at Victoria, her eyes asking for permission. Victoria, desperate, nodded.
Mildred pushed the head of the massager hard against the metal plate of the chastity belt, right over Victoria's clit. The vibrations traveled through the steel, a deep, resonant hum that was more intense than anything she had ever felt before. It was a direct, powerful stimulation that bypassed the metal barrier. Victoria cried out, her back arching, her hands clutching at the rug. It was overwhelming, a tidal wave of sensation. Mildred held it there, her other hand stroking Victoria's hair, murmuring words of encouragement as she built her up, higher and higher, pushing her past the point of frustration and into a realm of pure, unadulterated pleasure.
And then, it happened. An orgasm of her own. Not one given to her as a reward, not one teased out of her as part of a game, but one that was hers. It ripped through her with the force of a hurricane, a convulsive, shuddering release that was both physical and emotional. She screamed, a sound of pure, cathartic agony and ecstasy, tears streaming down her face as weeks, months of frustrated need and suppressed pain were released in one single, devastating moment.
When it was over, she lay limp and trembling in Mildred's arms, a sobbing, exhausted wreck. But for the first time in a very long time, she felt something other than despair. She felt a glimmer of hope. And in the warm, safe glow of the fire, she knew, with a certainty that settled deep in her bones, that she was not going back.
