Chapter 10 of 24
The notification buzzed on Clara’s phone, a bright, intrusive pop-up on the screen as she lay tangled in Linda’s sheets. Linda’s house, a sleek, minimalist apartment overlooking the river, felt a world away from the suffocating atmosphere of Chatham.
"Look at this," Clara said, a slow, predatory smile spreading across her face. She held up the phone for Linda to see. "Your iCloud account is being accessed from a new device in Chatham, Kent."
Linda, who was propped up on one elbow, tracing lazy circles on Clara’s stomach, leaned in to look. A low, triumphant chuckle rumbled in her chest. "The old cat finally took the bait. She couldn't resist, could she? The arrogance is sublime."
"She couldn't stand not knowing," Clara replied, her voice a thrilled whisper. "The need for total control is her biggest weakness."
The two women locked eyes, and a silent, electric current passed between them. All the weeks of careful planning, of leaving a trail of digital breadcrumbs for Eleanor to follow, had led to this single, perfect moment. The trap was sprung.
"No time like the present," Linda declared, swinging her legs out of bed with a newfound energy. The affair, the shared cruelty, had all been a prelude. The main event was about to begin.
They dressed quickly, their movements efficient and coordinated. There was no need for words; they both knew the plan. As Linda pulled on her sharp, high-necked blouse, Clara slipped into a simple, dark dress.
"I'll drive you back," Linda said, grabbing her car keys. "I'll give you a few minutes. Then I'll come to the door. leave it unlocked."
"Ok," Clara confirmed, her heart a steady, determined drum in her chest.
The drive back to Chatham was silent, charged with a shared, predatory purpose. Linda’s expensive car ate up the miles, its engine a low growl of impending confrontation. She pulled up a street away from Clara’s house, the engine idling softly.
"Go," Linda said, her voice firm. "Face her. I'll be right behind you."
Clara walked the remaining distance, the cool evening air a stark contrast to the fire burning inside her. She let herself in the front door with her key, the click of the lock unnaturally loud in the quiet house. The first thing she saw was Eleanor, sitting in her usual armchair, a self-satisfied smirk on her face. On the coffee sat Clara's old phone.
"Welcome home, my dear," Eleanor said, her voice dripping with false sweetness. "I trust you had a pleasant time with your... friend?"
Clara didn't flinch. She met Eleanor's gaze directly, a calm, unnerving smile on her own lips. "I did, actually. It was very... illuminating."
This was not the reaction Eleanor had anticipated. Her smirk tightened. "Illuminating? Is that what we're calling it now? Your little secret life?"
"I don't have any secrets," Clara said, her voice clear and steady. "But you, Eleanor, you have one. You've been snooping. You've been trying to claw back control, and you just proved how desperate you are."
Before Eleanor could retort, a sharp, authoritative knock echoed from the front door. It wasn't the timid rap of a visitor; it was the sound of a summons.
Eleanor's eyes narrowed. "Expecting someone?"
Clara's smile widened. "Always."
Linda didn't wait for an answer. The unlocked door swung open, and she strode into the room like a general claiming conquered territory. Her face was a mask of cold fury.
"You manipulative old cow," Linda snarled, advancing on Eleanor. "Did you really think you could get away with this? That we wouldn't know you were watching?"
"Get out of my house," Eleanor commanded, rising to her full height, her authority a wall she tried to throw up between them.
But that was the signal. As Eleanor's attention was fixed on Linda, Clara moved. She lunged, grabbing Eleanor’s arm and twisting it behind her back with a violence that shocked a gasp from Eleanor’s lips. At the same instant, Mark, who had been hovering, looked shocked, and his face paled. Linda grabbed his mother’s other arm, and together, she and Clara dragged the struggling, cursing woman towards the heavy oak dining table.
They slammed her down onto the polished wood, her face pressed against the grain. The fight was brutal but brief. Eleanor was powerful, but she was caught completely off guard, outnumbered by those who knew her methods, her weaknesses, and her every move.
Linda calmly reached into her pockets, pulled out a pair of handcuffs, and passed them to Clara. "Let's see how they fit the master," she said with grim satisfaction.
Clara snapped the cuffs around Eleanor's wrists, pulling them tight. The click was the sound of a new era dawning. They dragged the struggling, seething woman to her knees in the centre of the room.
"The mistake you made, Eleanor," Clara hissed, leaning down so her face was inches from her former mistress's, "was thinking you were the only one who could learn. You taught me too well. You taught me that control is everything. You just never expected me to take it from you."
"Mark, get me a steel punishment collar and padlock now", Clara ordered.
Mark snapped out of his haze and went to the sideboard, took the collar from one of the cupboards, and held it out for Clara.
"No", Clara told him, "You do it"
"An eye for an eye," he said softly, his voice devoid of its usual fear. He fastened it around Eleanor's neck, the final, definitive act of his own liberation as he snapped the padlock shut.
Eleanor stared up at them, her face a contortion of disbelief and pure, unadulterated fury. The heavy, wide collar felt like it was stretching her neck. The world she had so meticulously built and controlled had just been shattered.
