Chapter 1 of 24

A visit From Mother In Law

The Medway towns held a grey, damp beauty that Clara found both comforting and oppressive. She and her husband, Mark, had moved to Chatham a year ago for his work at the naval dockyard, buying a neat little terraced house that still smelled fresh and new. At 28, Clara was trying to build a life, to be the perfect wife, to create a home that Mark would be proud of. Her biggest obstacle arrived in a cloud of expensive perfume and unshakeable self-assurance: Mark's mother, Eleanor.

Eleanor was a woman who consumed rooms. At 55, she retained the formidable presence she had as a headteacher in her younger years. She was tall with a large, solid frame, her posture always immaculate. Her mahogany skin was set off by beautifully tailored clothes, and her dark, intelligent eyes missed nothing. She was visiting for a week, a visit Clara had been dreading.

"My, you've tried hard with this little place," Eleanor said on her first afternoon, her gaze sweeping over Clara's carefully chosen cushions and freshly arranged flowers. The praise felt like a criticism. "It's very... twee."

Clara forced a smile. "I wanted it to be nice for Mark."

"Of course you did," Eleanor replied, her voice smooth as honey but laced with something sharp. "That's a wife's purpose, isn't it? To try. The success of that trying, however, is another matter entirely."

The seduction began with these small, corrosive comments. Eleanor would find fault with Clara's cooking—"A little bland for my son, he always preferred more spice in his life"—and her cleaning—"You've missed a spot behind the radiator. A good wife is observant." She would touch Clara constantly, a hand on the small of her back that steered her, a pat on the cheek that was just a little too firm, a brushing of fingers against her breast that left Clara flustered and confused.

Mark seemed to shrink in his mother's presence. He was a capable, confident man at work, but around Eleanor, he became a boy again, eager for her approval, quick to agree with her assessments of Clara's efforts.

The psychological twisting was masterful. Over dinners, Eleanor would tell stories of Mark's ex-girlfriends, vibrant, exciting women who had "fire." "He always did love a challenge," she'd say, looking directly at Clara. "Someone who could stand up to him. Not that you're not... sweet, my dear. But a man doesn't want sweet forever."

The words wormed their way into Clara's mind. She started to see herself through Eleanor's eyes: plain, inadequate, a temporary placeholder until Mark found someone better. She became desperate for Eleanor's approval, trying harder, cooking more elaborate meals, cleaning until the house gleamed, but it was never enough.

The turning point came on the fourth day. Clara was scrubbing the kitchen floor, her back aching. Eleanor entered, holding a cup of tea.

"Leave that," she commanded. Clara froze. "Come here."

Clara stood up, her hands dripping suds onto the floor. She walked over to Eleanor, who was sitting at the kitchen table.

"You're trying so hard to be a good wife to my son," Eleanor said, her voice softer than Clara had ever heard it. "But you don't understand what he truly needs."

She reached out and took Clara's hand, her grip surprisingly strong. "He needs structure. He needs to be led. And you, my sweet girl, you want to be led. I can see it in you."

Eleanor stood up, her height forcing Clara to tilt her head back. She used her free hand to stroke Clara's cheek, her thumb lingering on her lips. "Let me help you. Let me teach you how to give him what he needs. Let me teach you how to be what we need."

The "we" hung in the air, a promise and a threat. Clara felt a strange sense of relief, a surrendering of a burden she hadn't known she was carrying. She nodded, her eyes filling with tears.

"Good girl," Eleanor murmured, and then she kissed her. It wasn't a motherly kiss. It was slow, deep, and possessive. Clara's mind recoiled, but her body responded, a traitorous warmth spreading through her.

From that day, Clara's education began. Eleanor would have her kneel at her feet while she read, teaching her stillness. She would make her serve her hand and foot, anticipating her needs. The physical intimacy escalated, with Eleanor teaching Clara how to pleasure her with hands and mouth, praising her when she did well, correcting her with sharp, stinging slaps when she didn't. Clara was being broken down and rebuilt in Eleanor's image.

The day before Eleanor was due to leave, she decided it was time for the final unveiling. "Tonight," she said, as Clara knelt naked at her feet, "you will be introduced to Mark as his slave."

That evening, the three of them sat in the living room. Mark was nervous, shooting confused glances between his placid mother and his strangely submissive wife.

"Mark, darling," Eleanor began, her voice calm and authoritative. "Clara and I have had a very productive week. We've come to an understanding about her role in this marriage."

Clara knelt on the floor beside Eleanor's chair, her head bowed.

"Clara has willingly accepted her position as not just your slave, but as our... shared property," Eleanor continued, her hand resting possessively on Clara's head. "She exists to serve us both. To bring us pleasure. To obey without question."

Mark stared, his mouth agape. "Mum? What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about reality, son," Eleanor said sharply. "The reality of your needs, and her desire to fulfill them. Isn't that right, Clara?"

"Yes, Mistress," Clara whispered, the words feeling both alien and right.

Eleanor laughed. "You see? She understands. And you will too."

The transition was immediate and absolute. That night, for the first time, Mark and Clara shared a bed with Eleanor. It wasn't a threesome of equals; it was an instruction. Eleanor directed them, commanding Mark to take his wife while she watched, critiquing his performance and Clara's. Clara felt like a doll, a body being used to demonstrate a lesson. Her shame was immense, but so was the strange, dark thrill of finally being useful, of finally getting it right.

Over the next few weeks, their life settled into a new, horrifying routine. Clara was their sex slave, their housemaid, their pet. Her days were spent in a state of constant, low-level arousal, denied any release unless her performance was deemed exceptional. She learned to worship both of them, to anticipate their desires, to find a sliver of worth in their praise.

The discovery happened by accident. She came home early from the shops, a rare moment of freedom. The house was quiet. She pushed open the bedroom door and froze.

Eleanor and Mark were on the bed. Together. Not with Clara as a conduit, but with each other. The raw, uninhibited passion between them was something Clara had never witnessed. It was primal, a connection that went far beyond the dominant-submissive games they played with her. Mark, her husband, was looking at his mother with a hunger that was both worshipful and carnal.

The scene slammed into Clara, and a sound she didn't recognize escaped her throat—a raw, animal scream of betrayal and revulsion. "No! You... you're disgusting! Both of you!"

They stopped, turning to look at her. There was no shock on their faces. No guilt. Only annoyance. And then, to Clara's horror, they started to laugh. A deep, mocking, united laugh that echoed off the walls and tore at her sanity.

"Look at the little mouse, thinking she has a right to an opinion," Eleanor sneered, getting off the bed.

Mark followed, his face hard, all traces of the lover gone, replaced by the cold authority of a master. "She forgets her place."

They moved towards her, and Clara scrambled back, a trapped animal. "Get away from me!"

They descended on her. Their hands were rough, efficient. She fought, scratching and kicking, but it was useless. They were stronger. They dragged her to the floor. Eleanor produced a bundle of rope from the bedside drawer, and with practiced ease, they trussed her up like a calf for slaughter. Her wrists were bound to her ankles behind her back, forcing her into a hogtie that was agonizing and humiliating. A ball gag was forced into her mouth, silencing her screams to choked, pathetic sobs.

They stood over her, two towering figures of power, looking down at her writhing, helpless form.

"You scream and shout," Eleanor said, her voice devoid of all warmth. "As if you have a right. As if you matter."

"You are nothing," Mark added, his voice like ice. "You are nobody."

"You are a thing we use," Eleanor finished, nudging Clara's side with her foot. "A pathetic, crying thing on the floor. This is your reality. Accept it."

They left her there. Hog-tied on the cold wooden floor of the bedroom, gagged and weeping, the sounds of their renewed passion washed over her. The fight drained out of her, replaced by a vast, empty void. She had thought she was falling in love with a domineering mother-in-law. She had thought she was finding her place in a new kind of marriage. She was wrong. She hadn't fallen. She had been pushed. And she had landed in hell, a hell where she was nothing, nobody, and utterly, completely pathetic.
