Chapter 12 of 24
The night under the floorboards was a descent into a primal hell. The darkness was absolute, a suffocating presence that pressed against her eyelids and filled her lungs with the scent of damp earth and ancient coal dust. The cold was a predator, sinking its teeth into her naked flesh, seeping into her bones until she shivered uncontrollably, each tremor a fresh agony against the ropes that bit into her skin. Her muscles screamed from the unnatural position of her arms, her shoulders feeling as if they were slowly being torn from their sockets.
Time ceased to exist, marked only by the slow dripping of water somewhere in the darkness and the frantic, useless beating of her own heart. At one point, her bladder, a traitor to her pride, released. A hot flood of shame spread across the cold stone, and she was forced to lie in her own filth, the smell a nauseating testament to her utter degradation. She tried to shuffle away, a pathetic, wriggling motion that only smeared the mess and ground the rough rope deeper into her wrists.
The first grey light of dawn filtering through the grate was a cruel promise. It illuminated her broken, naked body, a canvas of bruises and grime. It gave her a target: the rough wooden ladder leading up to the hatch. The climb was a symphony of pain. Every movement was an act of pure will, her muscles screaming in protest as she inched her way up the splintered steps, her naked body scraping against the cold, damp wood.
She reached the top, her body trembling with exhaustion, and pushed against the hatch. It swung open, and with the last of her strength, she hauled herself out onto the floor under the stairs.
She took the last step out of the cellar, and her legs, numb and useless, gave way completely. She tripped, falling heavily onto her side on the threadbare carpet. The impact knocked the wind out of her, and she lay there, a heap of bound, naked limbs, utterly spent. She had no energy to move, no energy to even lift her head.
It wasn't long before they found her. The sound of footsteps above, then the appearance of three pairs of shoes in her limited field of vision. Clara, Linda, and Mark.
"Well, look what the cat dragged in," Linda's voice dripped with amusement.
They laughed, a trio of cold, heartless sounds that echoed in the small space. They laughed at the sight of her, naked, filthy, and broken, a pathetic creature shivering on the floor.
"Get her up," Clara commanded Mark, her voice devoid of all emotion. "Take her to the back garden. Clean her. She's disgusting."
Mark, his face a mask of grim indifference, hauled her to her feet. He dragged her through the kitchen and out into the cool morning air of the garden. He didn't bother to untie her. He simply grabbed the garden hose, the nozzle set to a hard, stinging jet. The ice-cold water hit her like a physical assault, and she cried out as he methodically hosed her down, the jet blasting the filth from her body, leaving her skin raw and red.
When he was finished, he led her to the side of the house, where a drain pipe ran down the brick wall. He took a short length of chain, attached one end to the collar still locked around her neck, and padlocked the other to the pipe. He left her there, naked, shivering, and exposed, left to dry in the weak morning sun like a piece of forgotten laundry.
She remained there for hours, a spectacle of her own defeat. Late in the afternoon, they came for her. They unchained her and led her back inside, standing her in the middle of the living room.
"It's time to make a choice, Eleanor," Clara said, her voice flat. "We will buy you a ticket to London. You can go back to your old life, your old apartment. You will be free. You will never have to see us again."
She paused, letting the offer hang in the air. "Or," she continued, her voice dropping to a low, menacing whisper, "you can stay here. And you will face the consequences. You will be our slave. You will sleep in the cellar, you will serve us, and you will suffer. The choice is yours."
Eleanor looked at them, at the triumphant cruelty in Clara's eyes, at the cold ownership in Linda's. She looked at Mark, her son, who wouldn't meet her gaze. She saw her future if she stayed: an endless, bottomless pit of humiliation. Freedom, even the freedom of a lonely, broken woman in a city she'd fled, was still freedom. It was a chance to be no one, which was infinitely better than being their no one.
"London," she rasped, her voice a hoarse whisper.
"As you wish," Clara said, a flicker of satisfaction in her eyes.
They gave her some of Chloe's old, baggy clothes, a final indignity. They drove her to Gillingham station in silence, Linda and Clara sitting in the front, Mark in the back with her, a silent, looming guard. At the station, they handed her a small wad of cash, just enough for a one-way ticket. They didn't say goodbye. They didn't even look back as they drove away, leaving her standing on the forecourt of the station, a lost woman in another woman's clothes, utterly and completely washed from their lives.
