Chapter 14 of 24
Back in Chatham, the house felt different. The oppressive weight of Eleanor's presence had been replaced by a light, almost giddy sense of liberation. That first night, they celebrated their victory with a ritual that was part catharsis, part inauguration. Mark was bound spread-eagled to the bed, a gag in his mouth, his eyes wide with a mixture of fear and a strange, new kind of acceptance. He was no longer a participant, but a centrepiece.
Clara and Linda, clad in matching black lingerie, danced around the bed. They moved with a fluid, predatory grace, their bodies illuminated by the soft lamplight. In their hands were riding crops, which they used to tap against Mark's exposed skin—his thighs, his chest, his caged cock—in a rhythmic, staccato beat. It wasn't a punishment, but a performance, a joyful, mocking dance around the symbol of their vanquished foe. They laughed as they moved, their shared triumph a potent aphrodisiac.
When they were done, they untied him. Without a word, Mark crawled to the foot of the bed and curled up inside his steel cage. Clara clicked the lock shut. While Eleanor was taking a shower in her London flat, cleansing her body for her new conquest, Clara and Linda fell asleep in each other's arms in the master bed, the house finally, truly, theirs.
Over the following days, a new dynamic settled in. Linda, whose dominance had always been sharp and public, began to take a more central role in the household. Clara found it easy to let her. The fire of her personal vengeance against Mark and Eleanor had been banked; now, she was content to co-reign, to share the power she had fought so hard to attain. Linda was a natural ruler, her authority effortless and absolute. She would issue commands not with anger, but with a calm, expectant certainty that made disobedience seem impossible.
Mark remained at the bottom of the pile, his status now unchallengeable. And Linda made it her personal mission to make his life at the dockyard a living hell. Her campaign was one of relentless, inventive psychological warfare.
It started with the small things. She reassigned his desk, moving him from a semi-private cubicle to a workstation in the middle of the open-plan office, directly in the line of sight of everyone. She "accidentally" deleted a project he had spent weeks on, forcing him to start again from scratch while she "apologised" profusely to management for the "clerical error."
Her humiliations became more public, more intricate. She instituted a new "efficiency" policy that required all staff to account for their time in fifteen-minute increments. Mark's reports were always sent back with red-pen corrections, his language "not sufficiently corporate," his time management "unacceptable." She would call him into her office for "performance reviews" and make him stand at attention while she critiqued him for minor, invented infractions, her voice just loud enough for her assistant outside to hear.
The physical torment, which had once been a private affair, became a more frequent threat. She would call him into the stationery cupboard, the same place where she had first caned him. "Your posture is terrible," she'd say, running the cane lightly down his spine. "We need to correct that." She wouldn't always beat him; sometimes the threat, the cold touch of the cane on his neck, the knowledge that she could do it whenever she pleased, was a more effective punishment.
She took special pleasure in undermining his masculinity in front of his colleagues. She started bringing him a small, floral-patterned mug for his tea, a stark contrast to the sturdy mugs the other men used. "It's the only one left," she'd say with a sweet, false smile as his male colleagues snickered. She'd make him carry files for her, a stack of binders so high he couldn't see over them, then "accidentally" bump into him, sending them scattering across the floor for everyone to see.
One afternoon, she called him into her office. "We're having a team-building exercise tonight," she announced. "Drinks at the pub round the corner. The company's paying, of course." She paused, letting her eyes linger on him. "But you'll be serving."
At the pub, Linda held court, while Mark, his face a stony mask of humiliation, moved from table to table, taking orders and returning with trays of pints and glasses of wine. He had to endure the snide comments and knowing smirks of his colleagues, who were all too aware of the shift in power. Linda watched him with a look of cool, satisfied ownership.
When the tab was paid and the main crowd began to thin, Linda made her move. "Alright, that's enough for most of you," she announced to the remaining staff. "Mark, a few of us need to go back to the office for a debrief. You too."
Back in the empty, dimly lit office, Linda wasn't with just a few people. She had gathered a select group of staff she trusted—two other managers who enjoyed the office politics and a junior admin who worshipped Linda's authority. They arranged their chairs in a circle, leaving a space in the middle.
"Kneel, Mark," Linda commanded, her voice sharp.
He sank to his knees in the centre of the circle, his head bowed.
Linda began to speak, her voice low and cutting, pacing around him. "We're here because your performance has been letting this entire team down," she began. "Your work is sloppy. Your attitude is poor. You are a drag on this department's efficiency. You are a disappointment."
She stopped in front of him. "Look at your colleagues. Look at Janet. Look at Steve. You have made their jobs harder. You have wasted their time. I want you to apologise to them. One by one."
Tears of shame pricked at Mark's eyes. He looked at the floor, his voice a choked whisper. "I'm sorry."
"Sorry isn't good enough!" Linda snapped. "Look them in the eye and beg their forgiveness."
Forced to perform, Mark crawled from person to person, his face burning, as he stammered out apologies to the smirking, triumphant faces of his colleagues, who lapped up every moment of his degradation. When he was done, he knelt back in the centre of the circle, a broken man.
"Good," Linda said, a note of finality in her voice. "Now you know your place." She dismissed the others, and Mark, his spirit finally and completely crushed, drove home to the sanctuary of his cage.
