Chapter 16 of 24
In Chatham, the world had settled into a new, terrifyingly stable order. Over the next few weeks, Linda's hold on the household grew stronger, her authority becoming as natural and unshakeable as the rising of the sun. It was a subtle process, a slow tightening of the reins that Clara, in her post-victory haze, failed to notice until it was too late. Without ever realising it, she had found herself slipping back into a familiar role, not as a slave, but as the subordinate in a new power dynamic. She had traded Eleanor's cruelty for Linda's control, and in the end, it was all the same.
Now, the reality of her position was inescapable. She hung in the centre of the master bedroom, a grotesque living ornament. Her head and wrists were locked into heavy wooden stocks, the rough wood pressing uncomfortably into her skin. The entire device was suspended by thick metal chains hanging from a ceiling beam, her feet barely touching the ground, and her ankles screaming in protest at the cumbersome ballet boots that had been locked around them. A ball gag was shoved deep into her mouth, silencing any protest. She was naked, her body exposed and vulnerable, save for the stark, cold metal of a chastity belt locked around her waist and a spreader bar connected to black leather cuffs on her ankles, forcing her legs wide open.
It was Linda's latest game, a new piece of furniture for their ever-evolving dynamic. And Clara was the furniture.
Her torment was being amplified by a new presence. Linda had introduced Shelly, a young, timid-looking intern at the dockyard. Linda had found her on a fetish contact site, a girl with big, frightened eyes and a desperate desire to be owned. After a month of discreet meetings, Linda had offered her a job, bringing her directly into their web. At work, a new and terrible triumvirate had formed. Linda and Shelly now both tormented Mark, their cruelty a tag-team effort that left him a shell of a man, flinching at their every move.
But tonight, Linda had brought Shelly home.
Clara watched, her vision blurred by tears of helpless rage, as Linda and Shelly lay on the big bed, the bed where Clara had once slept as a queen. Linda held Shelly in her arms like a porcelain doll, stroking her hair, whispering in her ear. Shelly, for her part, was a perfect puppet. She was pliant and eager, her body melting against Linda's. But every so often, she would look over at the hanging Clara, and a sly, knowing smile would play on her lips. It was the smile of a favourite pet who knows the old one is being put out to pasture.
Linda saw the look and laughed, a low, throaty sound of pure satisfaction. "She's a good girl, isn't she?" Linda said, her voice carrying clearly to Clara's suspended prison. "She knows her place. She's eager to please. Unlike some people, who get ideas above their station."
She ran a finger down Shelly's arm, her eyes fixed on Clara. "You see, my dear Clara," she continued, her voice a soft, mocking caress, "you were a magnificent once, you were a challenge, but now, just look how easy it was for me to take control, you're almost as bad as that pathetic husband of yours. Shelly, on the other hand... is fresh. She's imaginative. She understands her place."
Shelly giggled and snuggled closer to Linda, her eyes never leaving Clara. She was revelling in it, in Clara's downfall, in the proof of her own favoured status.
"We're going to have so much fun," Linda said, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper meant for Shelly but loud enough for Clara to hear. "The four of us. Well, the two of us," she corrected herself with a cruel smile.
Clara squeezed her eyes shut, a single, hot tear tracing a path down her cheek. She had fought so hard, had endured so much, only to trade one cage for another. She had helped Linda seize control, only to become the first victim of that new regime. The irony was a bitter poison, far more painful than the stocks or the gag. She hung there, silent and powerless, a monument to her own foolishness, while her new owner and her new pet laughed in the bed she used to own.
