Chapter 1

Thump-thump, thump-thump. The train wheels struck the rail joints in time with Veronica’s heart until the two sounds were almost impossible to tell apart. The monotonous rhythm filled the carriage and traveled through the seat, up her spine, and behind her ribs. At every joint, the window trembled faintly in its frame. Beyond it, the Swedish countryside streamed past—green fields, red cottages, and dark stretches of forest dissolving with speed.

Veronica Lund sat with her back straight, feeling foolish, ridiculous, sexy, and brave all at once. The conflicting emotions sent her thoughts spinning and made her pussy pulse. She pressed her thighs together and tried to regain control of her body. She should not be feeling this way. She was following a lead of her own and needed to stay sharp. Every detail might matter; every irregularity might be a sign that something was wrong. Yet her entire body tingled as though she were a schoolgirl on her way to a forbidden encounter.

She let her gaze move through the carriage, studying the other passengers carefully out of long professional habit. An elderly couple sat facing each other by the window, enclosed in their own quiet world. A young woman in headphones stared intently at her phone. A bearded man read the newspaper, his expression relaxed. Veronica noted hands, bags, glances, and the positions of the doors. No one appeared interested in her.

She was fit, with shoulder-length red hair that fell softly around her shoulders. She wore a yellow summer dress made of thin fabric. It felt entirely wrong on her—too bright, too innocent, too ordinary. Over it, she had pulled on a gray cardigan, which she now drew more tightly around her body. She wore a pair of worn sneakers she had bought at a flea market several years earlier. The clothes made her look like someone she might pass on the street and never remember.

She surveyed the carriage once more, slowly and methodically. No one was looking her way. No one suspected what lay beneath the innocent surface. No one knew that she wore nothing under the dress. Beneath the thin fabric, her bare pussy rested against the lining. Every vibration of the train shifted the cloth against her and made it harder to think clearly.

The phone in her lap vibrated hard. The movement went straight through her core and made her flinch. It lay there on his explicit orders, exactly where he had decided it should be. At his command, she had also disabled every notification except his. No social media, no friends, no family—only him. The phone was to remain silent for everyone else but always be ready to receive his messages, whatever the hour. Against her better judgment, she had done exactly as he said. The screen lit up in her lap, cold and sharp against the yellow fabric.

“I see that you are approaching. Upon arrival, disembark and await further instructions. Master T.”

“Yes, Master T.”

Their communication was brief, cold, and precise. No unnecessary warmth, no polite courtesies. In the beginning, she had written longer messages, uncertain what he expected of her and how she should express herself in this unfamiliar situation. He had corrected her at once, stating curtly that he had no interest in small talk or irrelevant details. Since then, she had weighed every word before pressing Send. The reprimand had awakened something new in her: a stab in her stomach, warmth spreading through her body, a mingling of shame and exhilaration she did not fully understand but wanted to feel again.

Ever since the incident nearly twenty years ago, when ten-year-old Veronica had watched her mother’s career and reputation be destroyed, she had taken responsibility. For herself, for her little brother, and for the mother who could barely summon the strength to leave her bed. She had been the best in her class, the best at handball, the best at everything she attempted. Failure had never been an option. Again and again, she had been forced to make decisions she was far too young to face—about money, healthcare, and which people they could trust. No one else had held their lives together, so she had done it herself. The compulsion to remain in control, always to know what was coming, had stayed with her ever since. Now, having someone make decisions for her, about her, sent a tingle through her that was both frightening and liberating.

The train slowed with a long squeal and rolled into the station. They had arrived. Veronica’s heart beat harder as she stood. The sun was still high, gleaming in the station windows, when she stepped onto the platform and looked around. Heat lingered between the tracks, and a faint smell of iron, brake dust, and warm asphalt hung in the air. Passengers boarded and disembarked in a steady stream. They hurried past with bags and backpacks, absorbed in their own concerns. She could not see him anywhere. The photograph that had set everything in motion and brought her here was grainy and pixelated. He had been standing partly backlit, leaving the details of his face almost impossible to distinguish. Still, she had formed an impression of his height, posture, and hair color. No one on the platform resembled him even remotely. Disappointment came swiftly and heavily, but then the phone vibrated in her hand.

“My assistant is waiting for you. Orange shoes.”

Veronica’s thoughts raced. No assistant had ever been mentioned during the planning, not once. It made everything more dangerous, more uncertain, and considerably more foolish. Keeping watch on one person was relatively simple, at least for someone with her training. Two people were another matter entirely.

The phone vibrated again.

“A slave should know that her Master never reveals everything at once. If you wish to withdraw, you are of course free to do so. There is a return train in twenty minutes. I can send you a ticket. Otherwise: orange shoes.”

She hesitated and quickly considered the options and their possible consequences. Then she made her decision and turned back toward the platform, her lips pressed into a hard line. The elderly couple from the train sat on a bench near the exit. They spoke quietly, leaning toward each other. Beside them sat an exhausted woman with dark circles under her eyes and a screaming child at her feet. The crying cut through the surrounding murmur, but the mother seemed too tired to react. None of them wore orange shoes.

Three or four yards from the bench stood a dark-haired young woman, alone. She was tall and lanky, scrolling absently through her phone with one thumb. Her black bomber jacket was worn in a way that looked deliberate, and tight jeans traced her slender legs. She wore a pair of enormous orange shoes that clashed with the rest of her dark clothing. They could not possibly be a coincidence. Veronica swallowed, felt her pulse quicken, and crossed the platform toward her.

“Hi, my name is—” Veronica began cautiously.

“Kiss my shoes,” the woman interrupted without looking up from the screen.

“B-but what? Here?” Veronica cast a quick glance toward the bench. They were out of earshot, but not out of sight.

“Kiss my shoes.” The woman looked directly into her eyes now. The irritation in her voice was unmistakable.

Veronica stood frozen. She tried to think quickly, but her mind had turned to mush and her thoughts refused to settle. The dark-haired woman rolled her eyes and sighed loudly. The seconds passed. With each one, the command became more public, more humiliating. At last Veronica managed to collect herself. This was a direct order from Master T, and she did not want to defy him, whatever the cost. She had to go through with it. For herself. For her mother. She was just about to kneel when someone stopped close beside her, near enough for Veronica to feel the warmth of her body.

“Hi, I was—” another woman began.

“Kiss my shoes,” the young woman interrupted her in exactly the same way.

The newcomer immediately dropped to her knees and kissed both orange shoes lightly, almost reverently. Her lips brushed the worn leather with a humility that made Veronica shiver. It took only a few seconds. No protest, no hesitation. The people on the bench did not seem to have noticed anything. They continued talking and laughing as though everything were perfectly normal.

“Up,” the young woman said curtly.

The woman rose immediately, her gaze still lowered.

“Come.”

The young woman made a decisive gesture and set off along the platform at a brisk pace. The other woman followed like a shadow, no more than a few feet behind. Veronica hesitated for a moment before falling in behind them, third in line, unsure what she had just witnessed but unable to turn back. She kept the same distance as the woman ahead of her, as though that too were part of a rule no one needed to explain.

The woman in front of her looked about Veronica’s age, perhaps a little younger—not yet thirty. Her short blond hair appeared freshly cut, and she was stocky, with short, powerful legs and broad hips. Her face was soft and kind. Like Veronica, she wore a dress and cardigan: a navy-blue dress dotted with tiny white spots and a beige cardigan. She walked with short, obedient steps and kept her eyes on the ground.

No one spoke in the tunnel beneath the tracks. Their footsteps echoed from the concrete walls and mingled with a distant metallic rumble as the train began to move again. The smell of damp, dust, and exhaust hung heavily in the air. They continued through the station building, past a few late travelers, and out through the revolving doors on the far side. The doors squeaked behind them and slowly swung shut.

Several ordinary cars stood in the parking lot: a newer Toyota, a silver Volkswagen, and, among them, an old Volvo 240. It was rusty and crooked and looked as though it had survived four decades of Swedish winters. Paint had peeled away in broad patches along the bottoms of the doors. The young woman went straight to the Volvo, yanked open the driver’s door with a loud creak, and slid behind the wheel with practiced ease. The blond woman climbed into the back seat without hesitation. The engine started with a roar that shook the car. Blue-gray exhaust rolled across the asphalt behind it. Veronica barely had time to circle the car, note the license plate, and climb through the other rear door before the Volvo began to move.

The town quickly vanished beyond the windows, and soon they were back in the countryside. Green fields, red farmhouses, and lakes glittering blue between the trees. The sun had passed its zenith and cast a warm glow across the landscape. Long shadows stretched from trees and buildings. It was almost offensively beautiful, bordering on idyllic. Veronica forced her attention away from the scenery and back to what was happening inside the car. It smelled of old upholstery, gasoline, and the faint residue of cigarette smoke. The situation was insane. She was traveling with two unknown women toward a man she had only spoken to online. A man she knew almost nothing about. What had first caught her interest was not even his face, but something in the background of his dating-site profile picture.

Veronica was not proud of spending her evenings on dating sites. She had carefully constructed an image of herself as the strong, single woman. The woman who did not need a man. The woman who could take care of herself, thank you very much. That was the image she presented at work, among friends, and in every social setting. But it was only half the truth. Everyone needed closeness, someone who cared, someone who saw them. And Veronica needed cock. It was a simple physical longing she could no longer deny. She had tried to treat it like any other need: identify it, satisfy it, and move on. Dating had still been an unbroken series of disappointments. No man had come close to what she was looking for. Profile after profile, message after message, had felt empty. Slowly, she had widened her search, first to neighboring towns and then to the entire county. That was when she found him.

Her phone gave a brief vibration against her thigh. Almost simultaneously, the blond woman’s phone moved, as though they had received the same message. Both women looked down at their screens and then at each other.

“Give your phones to Jennie. You will not need them again today.”

The phone was Veronica’s only lifeline to the outside world, her only connection to the reality beyond the car. Her stomach tightened. She could take care of herself, certainly, but the phone was still an anchor, something from everyday life and the normal world. With it, she could call for help quickly if anything went wrong. It was a direct line to the station and to Martin, her colleague and closest friend. Without it, no one could track her route or hear from her if she changed her mind. She met the blond woman’s gaze. The same doubt was there, perhaps even the same fear.

Veronica was the first to extend her phone between the front seats. Her hands trembled. For a moment, her fingers clung to the familiar plastic case, to the last tangible sense of control, before she let go. The blond woman followed her example a few seconds later, her hand equally unsteady. The woman behind the wheel, whose name was apparently Jennie, accepted the phones without changing expression. She switched them off one by one with quick, practiced movements and tossed them into the worn brown glove compartment. The door shut with a dull thud. The sound felt final.

They had been driving for half an hour, perhaps a little longer—time was difficult to judge with her nerves stretched taut—when the Volvo abruptly slowed and stopped at the side of the road. Veronica looked around quickly, searching for something she could recognize later. To the right of the narrow gravel road lay open meadows and fields in the afternoon sun. Farther away, farmsteads were scattered across the landscape, red houses and white barns that looked both idyllic and disturbingly remote. To the left, the spruce forest rose dense and dark, almost impenetrable. There were no signs, no route numbers, and no house within shouting distance. A solitary brown-and-white cow stood beside a fence, chewing as it watched the car.

Jennie left the engine idling with a low rumble. She yanked up the handbrake until it caught with a click, climbed out, and strode around the car in quick, hard steps. Gravel crunched under her enormous shoes. She stopped at Veronica’s door and wrenched it open.

“Out. Now.”

Veronica hesitated, then climbed from the warm car on trembling legs. Jennie gripped her arm hard. Her fingers pressed through the cardigan like a vise as she marched Veronica away from the road and toward the edge of the forest. The engine continued to rumble behind them.

“You fucking disobedient slut,” Jennie hissed, her face only inches from Veronica’s. “You will do exactly as I say. Do you understand? Exactly as I say.”

Veronica opened her mouth to explain, but no words came. Only a low, strangled sound that died in her throat. She felt her pulse beating against Jennie’s grip.

“You dared refuse to kiss my shoes. Are you too good for that? Huh? Do you think you’re better than me?”

“No, b-but I—”

The slap struck her cheek with a hard, dry crack. Her ears rang, and Veronica had to summon every ounce of strength to keep instinct and training from taking over. She stood perfectly still. Pain spread like heat across one side of her face. Jennie spun her around and pulled off the cardigan. Then she seized the thin summer dress and tore it up over Veronica’s head in one powerful movement. Everything happened so quickly that Veronica had no time to react. The slap and the absurdity of the situation had made her thoughts sluggish.

Suddenly she was naked, her arms stretched above her head. Jennie seized her wrists and forced her arms behind her back, holding them together firmly with one hand while rummaging through her jacket pocket with the other. Veronica heard the faint jingle of metal. Then everything happened at once: click, click, cold steel around her wrists. Jennie tested the lock with a short tug on the chain. The handcuffs sat tight and immovable. It felt strange to be on this side of them.

Jennie turned her roughly until she faced down the road, then pointed ahead.

“Keep going. Second driveway on the left.”

Jennie stamped back to the Volvo, threw Veronica’s clothes onto the back seat, and dropped behind the wheel. The door slammed hard enough to shake the whole car. For a moment, Veronica saw the blond woman’s face through the side window, pale and still. Then the Volvo shot away, spraying gravel from beneath its tires and accelerating into a cloud of dust.

Police Inspector Veronica Lund stood alone and naked on the quiet gravel road, apart from her worn sneakers and the handcuffs behind her back. She watched the Volvo disappear over a rise some fifty yards away. The cow lowed softly on the other side of the fence. When the engine noise faded, the silence became absolute. The evening breeze moved across her bare skin.
