Chapter 2 of 4
Crunch-crunch, crunch-crunch. With determined steps, she walked in the direction the Volvo had disappeared. The gravel crackled, dry and sharp, beneath her sneakers, and every step sounded needlessly loud in the still afternoon. She tried to place her feet more carefully, but it made no difference. The road answered anyway: crunch-crunch, crunch-crunch. The sound followed her around every bend, making it impossible to forget how exposed she was.
Anger kept her back straight. Jennie. That fucking bitch Jennie. She would answer for this. Veronica was even angrier with herself. What the hell had she been thinking? She had surrendered her phone, allowed herself to be stripped, and now stood handcuffed in the middle of nowhere. She had willingly placed herself in a situation that defied every scrap of common sense she possessed. She reviewed her mistakes one by one, as though already drafting the report in her head.
Yet beneath the anger lay something else, something hot and stubborn that refused to die. The cuffs tightened around her wrists with every step, the evening air touched her naked skin, and the heat between her legs had not subsided. Quite the opposite. Naked, handcuffed, and abandoned on a country road. It was insane. Forbidden. And, to her bitter frustration, terribly arousing. The realization made her almost as angry as Jennie’s slap.
Every tenth step, she stopped and listened. At first, she heard only her own breathing, a little too fast, and the faint sigh of the trees on either side of the road. Then nothing. One advantage of a gravel road was that cars could be heard from a long way off. Their tires would grind across the stones well before she saw them, giving her time to get out of sight—among the spruces or down into the ditch if necessary. As she walked, she began measuring the distance between possible hiding places.
But what if a cyclist came along? The thought made her quicken her pace. A bicycle could appear almost silently, announced only by the faint rattle of a chain, and suddenly be right beside her. A stranger’s eyes would have time to see everything before she could hide. The shame should have cooled her, but instead the image sent another dark thrill through her body. She clenched her jaw. She ought to be frightened and furious. Not horny. She listened for the thin hiss of tires on gravel.
She reached the rise where she had last seen the Volvo more quickly than expected, having nearly broken into a run over the final stretch. She had hoped to see two driveways on the left somewhere close by. She did not. There was only more road, the same brown ribbon of gravel curving away and vanishing between the trees. No fresh tire tracks could be distinguished from the old ones.
The road wound on. She could never see more than a hundred yards ahead, sometimes less where the bends came close together and brush crowded the roadside. Every time she rounded a curve, she expected something to appear: a house, a barn, tracks from the Volvo, anything. The road gave her nothing. Only the anger, the mounting unease, and the maddening heat between her legs. Sunlight no longer reached every part of the road, and the air in the shadows was noticeably colder.
She stopped, breathed, and listened. A bird chattered furiously in a nearby tree. That was all. Or—between the bird’s short outbursts, she heard something else. A faint hum, so soft that at first she mistook it for the rush of blood in her ears. She turned her head one way and then the other, trying to determine its direction.
She bent to pick up a stone to throw at the bird, then remembered the handcuffs halfway down. The metal bit into her wrists when she moved too quickly, and the short chain allowed almost no freedom. Crouched there, she strained to listen and held her breath. Yes. The hum was growing. It no longer lingered in the background but had become clearer and heavier. An engine, and gravel crunching beneath tires. A car. She stood and looked back. Nothing was visible, but she was certain the sound came from that direction. Quickly, she assessed her surroundings. To the right lay open, treacherous fields, bordered by an electric fence whose thin wires glinted in the light. To the left, the forest stood dense, dark, and cool, full of spruce, brush, roots, and fallen branches. At least she could disappear there. The engine grew louder. The forest would have to do.
She forced herself upright and ran. A deep ditch followed the road, grass-covered along its sides and muddy at the bottom. It was no wider than she would ordinarily have cleared without difficulty. She had been an athlete, after all, and was still a fit police officer. Her body knew how to gather speed, measure distance, and read the ground ahead. The problem was that her body no longer had the use of its arms.
Jumping with her hands cuffed behind her was not easy. She realized that as soon as she began her approach. Without the ability to swing her arms, balance, or correct herself in midair, the leap carried her less distance than she had expected. She drove off with her legs and threw herself forward, but knew before she landed that it would not be enough. One foot found purchase in the grass; the other slid on the damp earthen bank. If she could only have thrown out her arms, she might have recovered. Instead, she became back-heavy. Her weight pulled her down as though someone had seized her, and she fell ass-first into the ditch. Her sneakers kicked up small splashes of mud as her legs folded beneath her.
The ditch was not deep. The damage was mostly to her dignity, but it was deep enough to conceal her from the road. The fall knocked the air from her lungs, and she clenched her teeth to keep from making a sound. Cold mud pressed against her. Her hot pussy had never been cooled so quickly. She drew air through her nose and forced her breathing to become slow and silent.
As she waited for the car, she thought about what she had seen on the wall behind Master T in his profile picture—the detail that had made her stop and enlarge the image. Although only one corner had been visible, she was certain: The Lament of Vanishing Light hung on his wall. Now, after all these years, she was close. If only the car would pass.
First the sound drew nearer, then the shadow, and finally the car itself. Through the grass, she saw only fragments of it: dark tires and a dusty body gliding past above her. She held her breath. The smell of diesel and hot metal sank into the ditch. One wheel struck a loose stone with a sharp crack. The car continued without slowing. The engine noise receded, the gravel crunched farther and farther away, and at last only the bird remained, as frantic and irritating as before.
Good. That gave her more time than she had expected. A useful reference point for next time. She waited several more seconds before moving.
Getting out of the ditch was laborious. More difficult than she wanted to admit. With her hands locked behind her, she had to struggle up one leg at a time and finally roll over the edge of the road, more like an injured animal than a human being. Grass scratched her thighs, the mud released her with a wet, sucking sound, and the cuffs rattled softly as she twisted. Twice she slipped back before one knee found purchase on the dry gravel.
She managed to stand, unsteady at first, then straighter. Her body was streaked with earth and dust, and her ass was coated in cold, foul-smelling mud that slowly ran down the backs of her thighs. Tiny pieces of gravel clung to her skin and chafed when she moved. She wanted to scream in frustration but swallowed it.
She started walking again. The purposeful crunch-crunch had been replaced by a humiliating squelch-squelch. Every step reminded her of the ditch.
Hope flared when the road curved again and she spotted a driveway on the left. Only one remained. She quickened her pace, slowly at first and then more, until she was almost running. A dozen yards farther on came the next driveway. The second on the left. There was no doubt which one Jennie had meant.
Now she ran as fast as she could. If a car came, then a car came. The objective mattered more than her dignity.
She turned onto the narrower road. It was noticeably better maintained than the one she had left. The gravel lay smooth and firm, without deep ruts, and short grass grew along the edges, looking freshly cut. Someone tended the road regularly and with care. It felt as though she had left something dark behind simply by turning off.
Ahead, a large hedge rose dense and high as a wall. She ran through the opening and entered a courtyard. At first, she saw only the open expanse, the gravel, and the broad facade. Then she took in the rest. She slowed and let her gaze work from left to right.
The house was old and large, but there was not a trace of decay. The facade looked freshly painted, the lawn was neatly cut, and the windows were polished until they gleamed. It was, quite simply, beautiful. Almost too beautiful, as though someone had recently put everything in order and then settled down to wait for her. Not a tool, a toy, or a forgotten watering can disturbed the perfection.
One set of tire tracks led to a closed garage with a white door whose paint was not chipped anywhere. Another ended beside the Volvo. It stood exactly where expected, its nose angled slightly toward the house and one rear wheel almost touching the grass. The engine was off, but a faint shimmer of heat still rose from the hood.
Only then did Veronica slow, not because she wanted to, but because her body could no longer sustain the pace. Each breath scraped her throat, and her legs trembled after the run.
She had come to the right place.
The front door stood open. Veronica went inside. The entrance hall was a stark contrast to the house’s rural exterior: severe, modern, and designed in concrete, glass, and steel. To the right lay a kitchen in the same style. A staircase to the left led to the upper floor. Directly ahead, the door to another room stood ajar. No voices could be heard, but somewhere in the house, wood gave a faint creak. Veronica had the distinct sense that people were waiting inside. She approached, pushed the door open with her foot, and peered in.
The room was large, roughly two hundred and seventy square feet, and almost empty. A solitary leather chair stood near the center. The walls were covered in dark-gray wallpaper with a black pattern. No paintings, she noted. The floor was bare, dark concrete. Ropes and chains hung from the ceiling, and several heavy rings and anchor points had been set into the floor. Everything looked clean, orderly, and deliberately arranged.
Jennie stood beside the chair, her back straight and her hands behind her. The blond woman stood opposite her in the same position. Against one of the long walls, a naked man knelt with his wrists tied to his ankles by white rope. Veronica stopped in the doorway and stared.
“Stand there. Now. He’s coming,” Jennie hissed, nodding toward the place beside the blond woman.
Veronica wanted nothing more than to march over to Jennie, tear into her, demand that she unlock the handcuffs and return her clothes. Then she would deal swiftly with everyone involved. She would identify herself as a police officer and demand their cooperation. The words were ready on her tongue. But heavy footsteps sounded on the stairs. She did none of it. Instead, she hurried forward and took her place beside the blond woman. The footsteps came closer, one at a time. Veronica straightened and pushed out her chest.
Suddenly she found herself inside one of her fantasies. After seeing what she believed to be The Lament of Vanishing Light, she had examined the profile closely—or what little there was to examine. The introduction was almost nonexistent: an alias, Master T; age, forty-seven; height, six foot one; seeking a slave.
At first, Veronica had understood none of it. Then she had read everything she could find about the BDSM world. The factual articles had been interesting enough, but something inside her had given way when she began reading the stories. She loved tales of dominant men and women doing whatever they wished with willing slaves. These days, she masturbated herself to sleep almost every night, her phone clutched tightly in one hand.
She bit her lip and forced the thoughts aside. She was not here to make a fantasy come true. She was here to follow a lead of her own.
The door opened, and he glided into the room with a cat’s soundless assurance. A panther. His presence immediately filled the room.
He wore dark suit trousers, a white shirt, and a charcoal-gray vest. A large wristwatch was his only jewelry. Everything fit him perfectly, and everything looked expensive. Veronica’s skin prickled as he passed behind her and let his hand brush hers. He moved without a sound, circled them, and sat in the chair. Resting his elbows on the armrests, he leaned back and allowed his interested gaze to settle on Veronica.
She drew a deep breath and pushed down her shame. She stood before him naked, sweaty, and streaked with mud, her pulse racing. Because she had shaved her entire body smooth at his command, her pussy was completely exposed. He had to be able to see how horny she was.
Master T opened his arms in a gesture of welcome.
“Welcome.” His voice was deep, calm, and utterly assured. “Welcome to an evening—and a night—you will not soon forget.”
No one answered. They stood with their hands behind their backs and their eyes facing forward. The naked man on the floor was now out of Veronica’s sight.
“As you have no doubt already understood, I am Master T. Beside me stands Jennie, whom you have all met. She is an alert and ambitious young woman who desires nothing more than to become Master J one day. That is why she is apprenticed to me.”
Jennie raised her chin slightly.
“Make no mistake,” Master T continued. “She is my slave. But she holds absolute authority over you. You will address her simply as Jennie.”
Jennie inclined her head.
“The man on the floor is Slave E. He and I have met before. Isn’t that so, slave?”
“Yes, Master T,” came the reply from behind them.
Master T turned his gaze to the blond woman.
“Welcome, Slave A. I trust you have prepared yourself in accordance with my instructions.”
“Yes, Master T. I have done exactly as you instructed.”
Her voice was faint and trembling.
At last, he turned his attention to Veronica.
“And last, though certainly not least, we have Slave V.”
He allowed his gaze to travel slowly over her naked, restrained body.
“I must confess, I am curious to know what happened here.” A faint smile touched his lips. “Jennie?”
Jennie drew herself up.
“She talked back, Master T. She behaved like a disobedient little cunt.”
Her voice was clear and steady. As she spoke the final words, she turned her eyes toward Veronica.
Veronica opened her mouth to protest, but Master T was faster. He raised one hand, palm facing her. Veronica immediately closed her mouth.
“So I made her walk the final stretch as punishment,” Jennie continued. “Why she is so filthy, I have no idea, Master T.”
Master T gave a low laugh.
“A well-chosen punishment. You are learning.”
He turned to Veronica.
“Slave V, why are you so dirty?”
At last, she was permitted to speak.
“I had to hide from a car in a ditch. But I wasn’t disobedient, I was only trying to—”
Master T rose in one swift, fluid movement. A single stride brought him to her, and his hand closed around her throat. His grip was firm and unyielding.
“What did I ask you?”
His voice was low now, almost quiet. That only made it more threatening.
“W-why I was dirty, Master T.”
“And what do you do when I ask you a question?”
“I answer the question. Nothing else, Master T.”
He held her gaze for another moment before releasing her.
“That was a considerably better answer.”
He returned to his chair and sat with the same calm composure, as though nothing had happened.
“As I was saying, Jennie: the punishment was well chosen. The fact that circumstances also forced her into a ditch makes the result all the more impressive.”
“Thank you, Master T.”
Jennie smiled and nodded.
“But remind me,” he continued. “What, precisely, were your instructions?”
Jennie swallowed.
“To take the Volvo to the train station, have the slaves kiss my shoes, and then drive home to you, Master T.”
“Did I say anything about improvising?”
“No, Master T.”
“And what does that mean?”
“That I have been a disobedient slave, Master T.”
“And what happens to disobedient slaves?”
“They are punished, Master T.”
Master T slowly leaned back.
“Precisely.”
