Chapter 11 of 13

Avenging Angel

Natalie sat motionless in her small office at the FBI headquarters, eyes staring blankly at a nondescript spot on the opposite wall. The normally tidy space felt oppressive, closing in on her—a stark contrast to how it usually centered her thoughts and helped her focus on the task at hand. Now her mind spun chaotically, unable to escape the traumatic events that continued to haunt her.

It had been five days since that horrific weekend spent at the mercy of the vile Joe Carter and his band of degenerates. Five days since they had taken her dignity, her sense of self, and very nearly her sanity. After enduring countless torments and humiliations she had somehow emerged still breathing, her battered body and spirit clinging stubbornly to life.

Returning to work was meant to provide a sense of normalcy, a respite from the fresh horrors lingering in her thoughts. She had resumed her professional routines, donned her customary pantsuits, and styled her hair into its usual elegant yet practical ponytail. On the surface, Special Agent Natalie Swann presented the same image of poise and capability that had defined her esteemed career for the past six years. But beneath that polished veneer, cracks had formed in her once steely confidence.

Most of the visible scars had faded, the crude markings scrubbed from her skin, the garish makeup and sperm stains washed away under long hot showers. She could do nothing about her dyed blonde hair though, except style it in as discreet a manner as possible. Today she just wore it loose, not caring to even wash it for several days. The drastic change of color had earned her more than a few snide comments and sidelong glances from her colleagues, but an icy glare had been enough to silence them.

The damage inflicted upon Natalie’s psyche, however, remained. In her mind, she replayed those awful scenes in an endless loop, fixating on each degrading moment. The utter powerlessness she had felt refused to release its grip, even now. Closing her eyes, Natalie could picture it vividly. The raucous laughter battering her ears as those leering strangers pawed at her body, their calloused hands groping her exposed curves.

She could still feel the bite of her own handcuffs digging into her wrists as she struggled helplessly. And the sensation of unwanted male flesh forcing its way past her lips, probing deep into her throat. The way she had gagged and choked around those swollen, dripping cockheads pumping in and out of her gasping mouth. How her jaw had ached from being forced wide open for so long, accommodating one faceless stranger’s erection after another. The shame and anger simmering within her as they treated her like a piece of meat rather than a human being, reduced to nothing more than holes for their pleasure.

Natalie’s pulse quickened as she recalled Joe’s final act of degradation—pinning her FBI badge to the outside of that sordid booth like some perverse trophy, splattered lewdly with layers of cum and piss. The utter destruction of everything that emblem represented cut her to the core. She squeezed her eyes shut, but could not block out the image of her soiled badge glinting in the dim light of that seedy backroom hallway. The polished gold that had once gleamed so proudly smeared crudely with the ejaculate of sneering strangers—a stark reminder that her authority meant nothing in the twisted world Joe had trapped her in. Where her esteemed position could be so easily stripped away, leaving her degraded and powerless at the hands of depraved men.

A faint clacking sound stirred Natalie from her spiraling thoughts. She glanced down to see her fingertips tapping an agitated rhythm on the polished wood of her desk. With a frustrated sigh, she stilled her hands, trying to reclaim some sense of inner calm and control. As her eyes refocused on the nondescript office wall, she studied the framed certificates and awards that had once been a source of pride but now seemed to mock her. Those prestigious accolades felt meaningless in the face of how easily Joe Carter and his backwoods cronies had torn down everything she had worked so hard to achieve. All her FBI training, her capabilities, her devotion to justice—none of it mattered in the face of such complete and brutal domination.

Natalie realized how fragile the foundations of identity and security truly were. She had envisioned herself as a strong, accomplished, and respected government agent dedicated to protecting the innocent. But Joe had ripped away that carefully constructed facade with little effort. He had exposed the delicate woman beneath, vulnerable and helpless against the cruelty of evil men.

Natalie sighed, blinking her tired eyes. She hadn’t gotten much work done and was behind on her assignments. Stacks of files and paperwork littered her desk, untouched for days. She knew she should be immersed in investigating leads, compiling reports, coordinating with field agents. But she couldn’t focus, could barely function. She thought of the crude words scrawled in marker across her bare skin. ‘Piggy’ emblazoned in large letters on her chest. A stiff cock drawn lewdly between her breasts. ‘Cocksucker’ proclaimed just above her navel. Each vulgar phrase intended to degrade and objectify her. She could still feel the hot imprint on her cheek where Joe had delivered a stinging slap to her face. He had reveled in exerting that power and control, putting her in what he believed was her ‘proper place’.

Natalie yearned desperately for the control and confidence that used to define her world but now seemed beyond her grasp. The prestigious FBI agent so many had looked up to was now a shell, haunted endlessly by the ghosts of that awful weekend. She clung stubbornly to the hope that one day she would reclaim her once unshakable sense of self and justice. For now, she focused on just getting through each day, trying not to drown beneath the deluge of horrific memories.

The path forward would not be easy, but Natalie Swann had never shied away from a challenge. She would find a way to put these pieces of herself back together and rebuild her identity from the rubble Joe had left behind. This was not the end of her story, of that much she was certain. Her spirit remained intact even if her mind continued to wage war against the lingering darkness.

Shaken from her spiraling thoughts by the trill of her desk phone, Natalie took a deep, steadying breath. She smoothed a hand over her mussed hair, straightened her posture, and reached for the receiver. It was time to try resuming her professional duties. She owed that much to her past self—the capable woman she once was and refused to believe was gone for good.

“Agent Swann,” Natalie answered, her voice betraying only the slightest tremor.

“Well, howdy there, Piggy! How ya doin’?”

Natalie’s blood turned to ice as Joe Carter’s gruff drawl oozed through the line. Filled with its usual malevolent delight, that grating southern twang was like nails raking down her spine. Just hearing it again inflated her ongoing mental trauma tenfold and made her heart constrict in her chest.

“I hope you had as much fun as I did last weekend,” Joe said, ending the sentence with one of his insufferable chuckles.

Natalie clenched her jaw. Fun? Being stripped of clothes and dignity, tormented physically and psychologically, used as a plaything by Joe and his depraved cronies—of course that counted as ‘fun’ for a sadistic creature like him!

“I take it you haven’t forgotten about yer little appointment today,” Joe continued, his smug tone setting Natalie’s teeth on edge. “Don’t tell me a silly thing like getting gangbanged by a bunch of horny rednecks made you forget!”

Natalie gripped the phone so tightly her knuckles turned white. She could practically see his cruel sneer through the phone, picturing those beady eyes that had stared down at her so triumphantly as he orchestrated her humiliation.

“Now listen up, blondie,” Joe went on in a more serious tone. “I’m sending you to my old pal Dr. Fitzpatrick this afternoon. He’s gonna get those cute little mosquito bites of yours upgraded to some nice big ol’ knockers.”

Natalie’s stomach dropped. In her trauma-addled mind, she had allowed herself to believe Joe’s demands about breast implants were just empty threats. But now it seemed he was determined to go through with it.

“I want ‘em big and bouncy!” Joe exclaimed. “Solid D-cups at least. Maybe even double D’s, heh. I wanna see you bustin’ out of your shirt next time I lay eyes on those funbags.”

Natalie shuddered, skin crawling at his vulgar words. The thought of Joe’s grubby hands pawing at her bare, inflated breasts, groping and fondling them to his twisted delight, made her want to scream.

“You just listen to everything ol’ Doc Fitz tells ya and be a good little piggy, hear?” Joe said. Though his tone was playful, there was an unmistakable edge beneath it.

“Oh, and Piglet? Don’t even think of standing me up. You know I’d hate to have to... persuade you.”

Before Natalie could even begin to form a response, the line went dead. She sat unmoving, the receiver still clutched in her trembling hand. After a long moment, she slammed it down on the cradle with more force than necessary. Her pulse racing and breath unsteady, she struggled to regain control.

Anger flared within her, momentarily overshadowing the dread and humiliation. She bristled at Joe’s audacity to call her personal line at the Bureau—and to talk about breast implants of all things! How dare he presume to dictate such an intimate, permanent violation of her body and free will! If he thought she’d be marching off to some back-alley clinic to get hacked up by a shady surgeon at his bidding, he’d better think again! The very thought of complying with Joe’s revolting desires after all he had put her through made Natalie bristle with resentment.

His taunting words echoed in her mind. ‘Piggy...’ He still insisted on calling her by that wretched name the hooker Trish had forced upon her during the games and rituals of degradation Natalie had endured in her own home. The degrading moniker made her skin crawl. Natalie forced herself to take slow, deep breaths, steadying her frayed nerves. She would not let Joe unsettle her so easily from afar. Not when she had endured so much worse at his hands.

Today was indeed Thursday, she realized with dread—the day Joe had arranged for her to get breast implants. She cursed internally, hating that the days had blurred together in her trauma-addled mind. Ever since enduring Joe’s twisted torments, time itself felt nebulous, events overlapping in a disorienting haze.

A mental flashback appeared unbidden in her brain—of herself standing broken and dirtied outside of Bubba’s bar. Before allowing her to leave that wretched dump, Joe had stuffed a strip of paper deep inside her pussy. It had taken ages to coax it out with her fingers once she got back home. Rummaging through her purse with trembling hands, Natalie located the crumpled, moisture-damaged note. It bore only an address scrawled in Joe’s crude handwriting, along with the appointed date and time: 2:30 pm.

Glancing at the wall clock, Natalie’s heart sank. It was already five minutes past two. She chewed her lower lip anxiously, considering her options. Refusing to show up was not one of them—not when Joe had made the consequences for defiance explicitly clear. She knew nothing about this doctor aside from Joe’s association with him and there was no time to look him up—if he was even registered. Her gut twisted with unease at the thought of placing her body at the mercy of some unscrupulous back-alley surgeon connected to Joe’s network of depravity. But she had no choice. Or did she?

Natalie stood up straight from her desk, steeling herself for the unknown. She smoothed her hair and clothes, attempting to project an air of poise despite her inner turmoil. Taking a deep breath, she grabbed her purse before reluctantly heading for the door.

The elevator ride down to the parking garage seemed to take an eternity. Natalie clenched and unclenched her fists, eyes darting around nervously as if expecting an assailant to leap out of the shadows at any moment. At this point she had no idea how far and wide Joe’s network extended, if even law enforcement was compromised.

Finally reaching her nondescript sedan, Natalie quickly slid inside and locked the doors. Her lungs were just starting to relax when a sharp rap of knuckles on the driver’s side window made her nearly jump out of her skin. Heart hammering, she turned to see one of her colleagues peering in at her—a junior agent named Levinson.

Natalie lowered the window a few inches, trying to restrain the tremor in her voice. “Yes, what is it?”

Levinson cocked his head, brow furrowing at her odd behavior. “Sorry to startle you, Agent Swann. You just seemed on edge rushing out of here. Everything okay?”

“I’m fine, Levinson, just in a hurry. I’ll see you tomorrow,” Natalie dismissed him curtly. She began rolling up the window, but Levinson stopped her with a hand on the glass.

“Are you sure everything’s alright? I know you’ve seemed...not yourself since last week,” he pressed. Natalie froze, panic constricting her chest. Had word of her humiliation at Joe’s hands already spread through the Bureau’s grapevine?

“I don’t know what you mean,” she responded tightly, fixing him with an icy stare. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I really must be going.”

Levinson held her gaze a moment longer, concern etched on his boyish features. But then he finally relented with a nod and stepped away from the car. “Okay. But if you ever need to talk...”

Natalie didn’t wait for him to finish, hitting the gas and peeling out of the garage, tires squealing. She didn’t slow down until she was a couple blocks away, her heart still thundering against her ribs. Gripping the steering wheel tightly to quell the tremors in her hands, she continued onward, hyper-aware of each passing minute bringing her closer to the deadline Joe had imposed.

* * *

Natalie mulled her choices over as she idled at a red light, her fingers tapping an anxious rhythm on the steering wheel. The engine rumbled beneath her, seeming to vibrate through her very bones. She glanced again at the crumpled paper on the passenger seat, its crude handwriting spelling out a destination she desperately wished to avoid. That 2:30 appointment loomed before her like an executioner’s axe.

Natalie’s heart pounded, her chest tight. She loosened her collar with clumsy fingers, struggling to draw a full breath. The confines of the car seemed to close in, its windows trapping her, forcing her toward an unthinkable fate. Then the traffic light turned green. And in that instant, clarity hit Natalie with the brilliance of sunrise piercing the darkness. No more. She refused to be a prisoner to Joe’s sadistic whims any longer.

In a single, decisive motion, Natalie veered left, cutting across oncoming traffic amid blaring horns. The sedan fishtailed before straightening into a reckless trajectory back toward home. Other drivers shouted curses and flipped obscene gestures as she breezed by, but their venom could not touch her. Natalie was drunk on liberation, every fiber of her being screaming in defiance at last.

As she navigated the bustling city streets, she kept a vigilant eye out for any suspicious vehicles. Joe had an extensive network of shady contacts—any one of them could be tracking her movements right now. She chose a meandering route through lesser-used side streets, careful not to settle into any predictable pattern. If Joe wanted to monitor her whereabouts, she would make it as difficult as possible for his goons.

Finally pulling into an open spot near her apartment building, Natalie hesitated before getting out of the car. Her unease toward entering her own residence still felt strange, even days later. But she couldn’t shake the lingering sense of violation after Joe had ambushed her there, turning the place against her in sinister ways. She glanced upward, scrutinizing the windows. The late afternoon sun glinted off the glass panes, revealing nothing of the inside.

Taking the stairs two at a time, Nat let herself into her apartment. Only then, with the deadbolt firmly thrown, did the anxious energy morph into overwhelmed exhaustion. Her ribcage heaved with each ragged breath as the adrenaline abandoned her system. She sank to the floor with her back pressed against the door, its solid bulk keeping the outside world at bay for now.

As her pulse steadied, Natalie’s gaze traced over the comforting surroundings—the plush sofa she had curled up on countless nights, its fabric still embossed with the shape of her slender frame. The framed photos lining the walls, capturing cherished memories and milestones from her neatly ordered life. Everything appeared undisturbed since she had left that morning, easing a fraction of her anxiety. This had been a safe and peaceful refuge before the storm named Joe Carter had blown in and shattered everything. Forcing herself to stand up and move briskly between rooms, she ensured all entry points were locked tight before turning her focus to more tactical preparations.

In the bathroom, Nat turned the faucet on full blast. Cupping her hands beneath the stream, she splashed the bracing liquid across her face. With the twisted game Joe had ensnared her in, even basics like breathing freely felt like stolen treasures, subject to being ripped away at his whim. But not today. Today, Natalie Swann had seized back a shred of autonomy.

Drying her face on a soft towel, she regarded herself in the mirror. Faint shadows circled her eyes, small outward clues hinting at the ordeal endured within. She had skipped her morning makeup routine, unable to muster the energy for keeping up a facade. Besides, cosmetics felt frivolous and false after being so lewdly painted up against her will on Joe’s perverse command.

Natalie ran a comb through her dyed blonde locks, taming their frizzed state. She had an urge to chop it all off, yearning to reclaim even her natural hair color from Joe’s twisted makeover scheme. But razoring her own hair seemed a bit extreme for now. One act of defiance at a time.

In the stillness, her mind honed in with laser focus to the problem at hand: what now? She had skipped the breast implant appointment, defying Joe’s orders at grave personal peril. Retaliation was inevitable, but she could not continue being his helpless puppet, her strings pulled by cruel whims.

Natalie’s dark lashes fluttered open, her brown eyes clearer and more vibrant than they had been in days. Possibilities began to take shape in her analytic mind, ways she might reclaim her freedom and agency. For now, her main advantage came from Joe underestimating her, seeing Agent Swann only as a weak and frightened plaything entirely under his control. So she resolved to take the least expected action in his eyes. The time had come for Natalie to turn the tables. Joe would never anticipate what she was prepared to do next; she was going to end him.

She was going to kill Joe Carter.

* * *

Natalie woke up with a start. She had only gotten a few hours’ worth of rest, but it was the best sleep she’d had in days. Exhausted after making her fateful decision, she had turned off her phone and crashed on the sofa to regain some energy for her nightly mission. With a yawn, she sat up, brushing back tousled strands of bleached blonde hair. The events leading up to her impromptu nap flashed through her mind—the chilling phone call from Joe, the reckless drive back to her apartment seeking refuge, her decision to end his reign through the most direct means possible.

Glancing at her delicate wristwatch, Natalie grimaced. Time was slipping away, dusk already beginning to settle outside. She had to prepare herself for the upcoming confrontation with her fat nemesis. Moving briskly to the bedroom, Nat stripped off her work clothes and stood before the full-length mirror in just her underwear. She scrutinized her reflection, gearing up for battle. The polished, professional facade Special Agent Swann presented to the world had to go. That capable identity felt fragmented now, the cracks Joe had inflicted refusing to fully mend. Nat’s tan skin looked paler than usual, with faint bruises still healing on her hips and thighs from rough handling. The cruel words Sharpied on her skin had faded but not fully washed away, ghostly outlines still discernible here and there.

Tonight called for Natalie’s darker half to take charge—the part of her that thrived on adrenaline and chaos. She had suppressed that wild side for years, burying it beneath the responsible, cerebral persona expected of an FBI agent. But those primal instincts, honed from her rebellious youth, bubbled beneath the surface. Now they needed to re-emerge if she hoped to regain any control over the battle waging inside her.

Steeling her nerves, Natalie turned from the mirror and walked to the closet, shoving aside her rows of pantsuits and modest blouses. At the very back, behind a hidden panel, she uncovered a stash of tactical clothing reserved for undercover operations or raids. Swiftly she donned the wardrobe of her alter ego, feeling her inner warrior resurface—form-fitting black cargo pants, a black long-sleeved compression top, low-profile shoulder holster, sturdy ankle boots with aggressive tread, leather half-gloves to protect the hands and ensure a firm weapon grip.

The cargo pants’ sturdy material hugged her sculpted legs, pockets placed strategically for easy access to weapons and supplies. Her athletic figure was accentuated by the snug, black top designed for both functionality and agility, wicking moisture while allowing full range of motion. The outfit felt like a second skin, melding perfectly to Natalie’s toned curves. She pulled her hair back into a tight ponytail, wincing at the bright unnatural color, then shrugged on a black leather jacket. Twining the ponytail up into a tight bun, she tucked it beneath a black ballcap. A few finishing touches, dark eye makeup and deep red lipstick, completed her transformation.

She checked the clip of her Glock 22, then slid the gun into the slim shoulder holster nestled against her torso, its reduced printing concealed by the leather jacket. The familiar weight of her weapon offered tangible reassurance. Next, she pocketed her FBI-issued set of handcuffs and a compact canister of mace—basic but useful tools if things got physical. Lastly, she sheathed a slender tactical knife inside her boot as backup.

Natalie turned to examine herself in the mirror once more. The polished, upstanding FBI agent was gone. In her place stood a femme fatale of the shadows—a seductive siren crossed with a deadly mercenary. Natalie barely recognized herself beneath the tactical facade. But she felt the long-dormant darkness rising within her, primed for combat. Slipping out of the apartment like a silent avenging angel, Natalie entered the night, ready to face her destiny. She did not know if she would return here again, but she moved forward with purpose, propelled by her vow to make Joe pay for the atrocities inflicted upon her mind, body and soul. She would have justice, or she would have blood. Perhaps both before this night ended.

* * *

Natalie drove her sedan through the empty backroads, the beams of her headlights cutting through the inky darkness. The wooded landscape was bathed in shadow, the moon and stars obscured by a thick canopy of leaves overhead. She knew these old logging routes well from her initial trip to this area, having memorized the way leading to Joe’s isolated trailer park lair. An uneasy silence permeated the night, broken only by the low rumble of her engine and the crunch of tires on uneven tarmac. Natalie’s heart pounded, her half-gloved palms gripping the steering wheel tightly as the looming confrontation grew closer.

She remembered the last time she had traveled this lonely route, though it seemed like ages ago now. How naive and unprepared she had been then, venturing blindly into the spider’s web that awaited her. The events that had transpired over a single night had irrevocably altered Natalie’s world, fragmenting the polished veneer of her life into jagged shards. She could never take back the choices made in ignorance on that fateful drive, could not undo their devastating consequences. But with iron resolve, she now returned to the scene of her undoing in order to reshape the outcome on her own terms.

The ghost of her former self seemed to sit beside her, wide-eyed and unsuspecting as silhouetted trees whizzed past the window. Natalie remembered the nervous excitement churning within her on that first trip, an intoxicating cocktail of fear and desire propelling her into the unknown. How curious she had been about the mysterious Joe Carter and what forbidden fruits awaited discovery in his tangled web.

Now, Natalie’s mouth twisted into a bitter smile at the naivete of her past self. She had willingly walked into a viper’s nest expecting fulfillment, only to be sunk into fathomless humiliation and torment. Joe’s poison had infected her, warping Natalie’s spirit and sense of self. But no more.

She had come prepared this time, armed not just with a weapon but with the element of surprise. Joe expected his broken little plaything, not the femme fatale bent on vengeance barreling toward his door. Come what may, Natalie would seize control of her fate this night. The timid lamb who had stumbled blindly into the wolves’ den was gone. In her place now stood a dark panther, claws unsheathed and eyes burning with retribution.

As the decrepit entrance sign for Twin Pines Meadows emerged from the shadows, Natalie killed the headlights. She coasted the last mile by sparse moonlight alone. Pulling the car off the main road, she parked it behind some dense underbrush and paused to steady her nerves. The full weight of what she was about to do sat like a stone in her gut. For a long moment she sat gripping the inert wheel, peering into the void beyond the windshield. Somewhere in that abyss of trees and shadows lurked the man who had shattered her spirit and stolen her dignity. Ending Joe’s life would irrevocably alter her own. But it was a price she was prepared to pay. Gripping the handle of her G22, she slipped from the vehicle and melted into the woods.

The tactical outfit she wore aided her stealth, blending seamlessly into the shadows. Natalie relished the empowerment it granted after being so cruelly stripped of clothing and dignity at Joe’s hands. The night air was brisk, raising goosebumps along her arms beneath the leather jacket. Her breath came out in faint white puffs as she moved steadily toward her destination, hyper-alert to any sounds or signs of life. The faint crunching of her boots navigating the gnarled roots and brittle undergrowth lacing the forest floor seemed deafening in the stillness, making her cringe at each snap. Her eyes strained against the pitch blackness surrounding her. Natalie fought back the primal fear threatening to unsteady her focus, calling upon her FBI training to quell the unease. The woods around her remained still, cloaked in hushed shadows as if the trees themselves sensed the gravity of her mission.

Up ahead, the broken chainlink fence surrounding the park came into view. Natalie spotted an opening wide enough for her slim shape and crept beneath the sagging sections, its rust staining her gloves. Then she was through, moving swiftly across the muddy earth beyond.

Skeletal silhouettes of deserted vehicles soon emerged before her, just as dilapidated as she remembered—the perimeter of Joe’s ramshackle domain. Natalie moved into cover beside the rusted hulk of an old school bus, its peeling yellow paint barely visible in the darkness. She strained her ears, listening for any sign of life nearby. Only silence greeted her. The fine hairs on the back of her neck prickled. Something about the heaviness of the atmosphere felt sinister, as if the very darkness was complicit in concealing secrets.

Natalie suppressed a shudder. She half-expected Joe’s leering face to emerge from the gloom at any moment, taunting her with his ugly words. But she could not falter now. Pushing away from the bus, Natalie slipped from shadow to shadow, a specter of death itself come to collect. She silently cursed the bright bottle-blonde hair peeking out from beneath her cap, certain it would give her away. But the shadows seemed to embrace her, concealing the tactical assassin from sight.

Spiky, dead grass crunched softly beneath her boots. Somewhere nearby, a lone owl hooted, its forlorn call piercing the heavy silence. The ghostly shapes of wrecked cars formed a maze around her. Heaps of discarded machinery and moldering furniture lay abandoned, seeming to watch her passage with unseen eyes. The familiar stench of stale beer and cigarette smoke lingered in the air, faint but unmistakable. It turned her stomach, bile rising in her throat as memories of degradation threatened to overwhelm her composure. Natalie clenched her jaw, pushing back the dark visions that tried to cloud her mind. She had to stay focused.

She passed the dilapidated playground near Joe’s lot. The broken swing hung motionless now, its chains stiff in the calm of the night. And there, not far beyond, loomed the battered semi-truck Joe called home, its bulk receding into the gloom. Memories of past violations inflicted within its tin walls stirred an icy fury in Natalie’s core, steadying her resolve. She tightened her grip on the Glock’s checkered handle, its solidity centering her chaotic thoughts. Drawing on her training, Natalie visualized the tactical entry she would soon attempt. She pictured her target—the loathsome, grinning face of Joe Carter—and imagined putting a bullet between his pig-like eyes. She would have justice this night.

Nat slid up against the semi’s cold metal exterior, the chilled steel biting through the thin leather of her jacket. Pressing her back flat against the chipped paint, she held her breath, straining to discern any sounds coming from within. Only silence greeted her. Glock poised to fire, she crept alongside the trailer’s length, senses on high alert.

Reaching the front corner, she peeked around. A rusted red old pickup truck that she assumed was Joe’s stood parked in the dirt lot. So, he was home. But was he alone? A quick test of the semi’s door handle found it locked up tight. Natalie paused to think. A frontal assault seemed unwise, despite the heady vengeance boiling her blood. Joe surely took precautions against unwanted guests barging through his front door guns blazing. A clever agent would need finesse in this situation, not brute force. Natalie decided to instead try her luck at the trailer’s rear entrance that she remembered from her last visit here.

Crouching low, Nat retraced her steps through the disheveled park and entered the woods bordering its perimeter, weaving her way carefully across exposed roots and loose stones until she reached the tree line behind Joe’s trailer. She pressed against the rugged bark of an oak, its grooves digging into her spine. Nearby, the rear of his ramshackle trailer stood dark and silent, just visible between shadowed trunks.

Then, out the corner of her eye, a glint of reflected moonlight flashed. Natalie froze, pulse hammering as she discerned the thin tripwire strung at ankle height through the underbrush. One wrong move would’ve triggered the unseen trap, alerting Joe to an intruder, or worse. Natalie let out a slow, shaky breath, cautiously shifting her foot to avoid the wire. These backwoods hillbillies were craftier than she expected. She would need to tread lightly.

Thanking her lucky star, she moved on toward the crude rectangular cutout that posed as a makeshift back entrance to the trailer. She reached out a cautious hand, black leather glove just brushing the handle.

Locked as well. Damn!

Natalie chewed her lower lip, debating her next move. Trying to force or pick the door lock could alert Joe and lose her the advantage of surprise. Keeping flush against the exterior wall, Natalie crept toward the nearest grime-smeared window. She held her breath, slowly lifting her gaze to peer inside. The interior was cloaked in darkness. Gripping her Glock tightly, she chanced cracking the window open an inch. The faint screech of the sliding pane set her teeth on edge. She froze, pulse roaring in her ears as she listened for any reaction from within. After an agonizing moment of stillness, she let out a shaky exhale and grabbed the windowsill, hoisting herself up with the grace of a feline. It was a tight squeeze, but with some agile maneuvering she managed to slip her slender frame through the opening.

Natalie’s boots landed silently on the dingy linoleum floor. The interior smelled of stale cigarette smoke, unwashed bodies, and lingering depravity. Memories of her first visit here flooded back. The interview with Joe, his forward behavior, her return visit that same night, and the perversions she had more or less willingly gone through at his hands before leaving in shame. She shook those disturbing thoughts from her mind and crept forward, relying on her honed senses to navigate the pitch black trailer. Her outstretched fingers brushed against a surface coated in grease and crumbs—likely the small kitchen table where her torment had first begun. Palming the grip of her Glock, she moved onward through the darkness.

The shuffling of Natalie’s stealthy footsteps was deafening in the cramped space. She cringed at each creak of the floor, convinced Joe would leap at her from the shadows. Moving slowly, cautiously, she cleared each area—filthy kitchen first, then a cluttered living space smelling of stale smoke. Hallway, bathroom, all empty. Only Joe’s bedroom remained, door slightly ajar at the end of the hall. As she neared it, her foot collided with something solid. An empty beer bottle went skittering across the floor, bumping into the wall. Natalie froze, heart in her throat. Then came a series of snorts and grunts. The sound of a man’s slumbering breath rumbled from the next room, blissfully undisturbed.

Approaching the bedroom door, Natalie steadied her nerves and nudged it wider with the tip of her boot. The creak of old hinges echoed unnaturally loud in the stillness. She scanned the dim space, gaze settling on the unmade bed, and a human-sized lump tucked beneath a threadbare blanket. From the size of that shape, it could only be Joe.

Natalie stepped inside, pulse roaring in her ears. This was the moment, her chance to end this nightmare once and for all, consequences be damned. She crept toward the bed on cat-like feet, coming to stand over Joe’s sleeping form. In the gloom, she made out the rise and fall of his wide chest, deceptively tranquil. Her grip tightened on the Glock, ready to fire point blank into his odious body.

Righteous fury ignited within Natalie’s core, her finger tightening on the trigger. Then she hesitated. Shooting an unarmed man in his sleep, no matter how vile, went against everything she believed in. And yet simply wounding him would not guarantee her freedom from his twisted games. Her chances of escape were slim to none if he regained consciousness. Natalie’s mind raced as she stood frozen in indecision, her finger moving away from the trigger and back onto it, then away again.

A floorboard creaked under Natalie’s shifting boot. She froze, heartbeat thundering in her ears. For a split second, her eyes dropped down toward the source of the sound. At the same time, a sudden snort came from the bed, followed by the heavy thud of Joe’s feet hitting the floor. Natalie darted back as the dark shape of blubber came alive, lumbering toward her with frightening speed. She squeezed the trigger. A deafening crack split the air as a bullet buried itself in the wall inches from Joe’s head.

“The fuck?” Joe bellowed. Natalie fired again wildly. Joe lunged and his meaty fist connected with her wrist, sending the Glock skittering away into darkness. Before Natalie could react, Joe’s hands closed around her throat, slamming her back against the wall.

“You wanna play tough, cunt? I’ll give you tough!” Joe spat in her face. Natalie clawed at his iron grip, choking for air. Summoning all her strength, she drove her knee up hard into his groin. Joe howled and loosened his hold just enough for Natalie to tear free. She bolted for where she had dropped her gun, only for 250 pounds of raging redneck to tackle her from behind.

They crashed to the floor, his obese bulk pinning her down, crushing the breath from Natalie’s lungs. She thrashed beneath him, desperate for air. Flailing wildly, she managed to land an elbow into his face. Blood spurted from Joe’s nose, hot droplets splattering her cheek. But his grip remained unbroken, his meaty hands encircling her throat again, thumbs digging into her windpipe in an iron chokehold. Caught between his bulk and the unforgiving floor, she had no leverage to wriggle free.

“I didn’t think you’d be stupid enough to come looking for me, blondie,” Joe taunted through yellowed teeth, his fetid breath rolling over her face. Natalie writhed helplessly in his clutches as black spots swam across her vision. She knew she was passing out. With the last shred of her fading consciousness, she grabbed for the mace in her back pocket, fingers fumbling for the canister within. Finally catching the slim cylinder, she wrenched it free and angled the nozzle toward Joe’s leering face hovering above. She pressed down hard, unleashing a hissing torrent of fiery spray into his beady eyes.

Joe howled in agony, releasing his death-grip on Natalie’s throat to claw at his burning eyes. She gasped, sweet air flooding her starving lungs. Squirming out from under him, she scrambled across the filthy floor toward where her Glock had fallen. But a meaty hand closed around her ankle, jerking her back with bruising force.

Once again she found herself pinned beneath Joe’s colossal frame. Fury boiled inside Natalie, her blood aflame. She would not surrender—she had to fight with everything she had left. As Joe reared above her, ugly features contorted in mace-reddened rage, she drew back her leg and unleashed a powerful kick straight into his already tenderized groin. His cry was pure anguish as her boot connected with crushing force.

Seizing the precious seconds his pain afforded, Natalie rolled free and leapt to her feet. Joe lunged for her, arms outstretched, but blind fury had made him sluggish. Before he could recover, Natalie delivered a forceful frontal kick straight into his massive gut. The breath left his lungs in a great whoosh as he doubled over. Wasting no time, Nat followed through with a spinning back kick, her heel connecting solidly with his jaw in a spray of bloody spittle. Joe crashed to the floor with a resounding thud that seemed to shake the very walls.

Natalie stood panting over his crumpled form, poised to continue her assault. But Joe lay unmoving save for a faint groan, the fight knocked out of him. She had bested the ogre, if only for a precious moment. Natalie’s chest heaved, her nerves electric, body coursing with adrenaline. She had to escape now before Joe regained his senses. Giving up the search for her fallen Glock, lost to the bedroom shadows, she darted back the way she had come, making for the open kitchen window.

Natalie elongated her body into a spear-like shape and dove through the narrow opening. She landed in a smooth tuck and roll on the grassy patch outside, before rising fluidly into a sprint, heading for the cover of the shadowy woods.

Freedom was so close she could taste it. A dozen more strides and she would melt into concealing forest. But in her adrenaline-fueled haste, her boot caught the tripwire strung at ankle height—the same wire she had avoided minutes ago! Before Natalie even registered her misstep, her leg ripped out from under her with brutal force. The ground spun away as she was hoisted upside down by one ankle, the wire biting into her leg. The forest canopy whirled around her and something solid—she thought it might be a tree trunk—slammed hard into her back, the breath punched from her lungs once more. Gasping, she clawed at the air, struggling to orient herself. How could she have forgotten about the stupid trap?

As her vision stabilized, Natalie’s blood turned to ice. Joe’s hulking silhouette lurched into view, a large knife glinting in his raised fist. Though his features were contorted in rage, blood still dripping from his lumpy nose, his beady eyes held chilling purpose. There would be no mercy shown now.

Natalie thrashed against the wire’s unyielding hold, her inverted world tilting. Chest heaving, pulse roaring in her ears, she watched Joe approach as if in slow motion. She knew then with chilling certainty that this sadist would not stop until she was dead or broken beyond repair.
