Chapter 9 of 9
It was a small wedding. Emmy and Robert made the trek on foot from their ruined ship to the king's camp only to find that with Baron Shadeguard's demise, the barbarian rebellion that he'd funded had quickly fallen apart. Emmy regaled her father with the tales of their adventures (leaving out the details that no father should hear of his daughter) and he accepted Robert's request for her hand in marriage on the spot. They were wed before the day was out.
As a wedding gift, the king granted the happy couple the use of his own personal airship, the Dovetail, and bade them return the collar to the capital where the council would decide what next to do with it.
Emmy sat in Robert's lap as the ship soared through the billowing clouds. She'd just finished taking a rubbing of the runes on the inside of the collar. They would send it off to Professor Pemberton to see if he could finish the translation that he'd started when they'd visited him before. Emmy turned the collar over in her hands, gazing into the blank gem fixed on the front of it.
"So what next?" Robert asked, nuzzling his new wife's neck with gentle kisses.
"I think there's still a lot of people out there who need our help," Emmy suggested.
"I'm sure that there are," Robert agreed.
She turned to him with a devilish grin. "And, also, I think I'm overdue for a punishment," she said coyly.
"Is that so?"
"I'm sure my father wouldn't be too upset if we 'borrowed' his ship for a while longer," she suggested.
"Oh, you naughty girl," Robert smiled.
Emmy raised the collar to her neck. Robert brought the clasps close together and they snapped shut on their own.
"I think you're a bit overdressed," he decided, and lead her down into the hold of the ship.
