Chapter 3 of 24

A Father's Secrets

Simon's thumb traced the embossed whip on the black card, the raised leather coils a strange, tactile puzzle in his hand. He stared at the silver number, the two beers having given him just enough liquid courage to bridge the gap between curiosity and action. He pressed the screen, the click of the connection unnaturally loud in the silent study. The phone rang twice, each tone a sharp, formal chime that echoed his trepidation. Then the ringing stopped, and a voice, smooth as polished steel and utterly devoid of warmth, filled his ear.

"You've reached the line of Mistress Genevieve. Be advised that my time is precious and my standards are absolute. If you wish to be considered for an audience, you will leave your name, your number, and a brief, respectful explanation of why you believe you are worthy of my attention. I do not tolerate timidity, nor do I entertain the curious. Only the truly devoted will receive a response. Do not call back. Wait."

The message ended with a final, decisive beep, leaving Simon in profound shock. His mind, already clouded by grief and alcohol, reeled. He panicked. The carefully constructed world of his father's legacy, built on piety, discipline, and unwavering moral principle, showed its first crack.

"Er, I'm very sorry," he stammered into the phone, his voice a pathetic squeak. "I must have dialed the wrong number." He fumbled with the screen, his thumb slipping in his haste, then jabbed the disconnect button. He dropped the phone onto the desk as if it were contaminated, the clatter unnaturally loud in the suffocating silence.

He leaned back in the leather chair, his heart hammering against his ribs. He stared at the black card lying innocently on the pile of tax receipts. Mistress Genevieve. The name itself sounded like something from a cheap novel, not the life of a man who considered a glass of sherry before dinner a wild indulgence. Could his holier-than-thou father, the man who judged others with the righteous fury of a biblical prophet, have had a secret life? A secret life of whips and mistresses? It didn't make any sense. It was a contradiction so profound it made his head ache, a single dark thread threatening to unravel the entire tapestry of his father's memory.

The battered blue Mini Cooper was now parked in the discreet, private garage of their modern townhouse. Inside, the atmosphere was a world away from the oppressive gloom of Simon's inheritance. Chloe lay with her head nestled against her mother's chest, Miriam reclining back against the comfortable leather cushion of their sofa. She was casually stroking her daughter's shoulders, her fingers tracing lazy circles on the warm, bare skin, as they both basked in the post-coital relaxation that settled over them like a soft blanket.

Chloe idly flicked through their business phone, scrolling through the gallery. She looked at pictures their clients had been ordered them to send, each image a carefully crafted tableau of control and submission. All were demeaning and humiliating by design. Before adding them to her library, she checked the Cash App payments they had received for the privilege of being ordered to take such pictures. Satisfied, she navigated to the voicemail tab. A new message icon pulsed softly. She clicked it, putting it on speakerphone.

A man's panicked voice filled the room. "Er, I'm very sorry," he stammered, "I must have dialed the wrong number."

Chloe tutted in annoyance. "Honestly," she sighed, already reaching to delete it. "It was only a stupid wrong number. Probably some bloke who found our card in a pub restroom and chickened out."

But Miriam's ears pricked up. Her eyes, which had been half-closed in blissful repose, snapped open. "Play that again," she told Chloe, her voice suddenly sharp, all traces of languor gone.

Chloe rolled her eyes. "Mum, it's nothing. Just another time-waster."

"Just play the damn thing again," Miriam insisted, her tone leaving no room for argument.

"Okay, okay, don't get your panties in a twist," Chloe retorted, a flicker of her old, defiant humor surfacing. The remark earned her a sharp, corrective tap on the head from Miriam. She yelped playfully and replayed the message.

As the stammering, panicked voice filled the room a second time, Miriam's expression shifted from concentration to dawning comprehension, then erupted in a loud, rich laugh. "Well, I'll be fucked," she declared, her voice booming with triumphant amusement.

"What?" Chloe asked, confused by her mother's sudden outburst.

Miriam grabbed the phone from her daughter's hand, a wicked grin spreading across her face. "Don't you recognize your brother's whiny little voice?”

Simon jumped as his phone buzzed on the polished mahogany desk, the sound like an electric shock in the oppressive silence. He snatched it up, his heart thudding. The screen read "Unknown Number." His mouth was dry as he answered, his voice a croak. "Er, hello? Who is this?"

"Who is this?" the voice on the other end replied, a cool, cutting contralto that he recognized instantly. "You called me."

It was the same voice from the voicemail, Mistress Genevieve, but this time it was live, immediate, and infinitely more intimidating. Panic flared in Simon's chest. "Erm, I'm sorry," he blurted out, the words tumbling over each other. "It was the wrong number."

"Nonsense," the lady stated, her tone leaving no room for debate. "You read the number from one of our exclusive cards, and I demand to know why you called it." There was something in that voice, an unshakeable authority that put him squarely in his place, as if he were a small child again standing before his father, caught in some transgression. The old, ingrained instinct to obey, to confess, kicked in with a sickening lurch.

"Erm, I'm sorry," he stammered, his defenses crumbling. "It was a mistake. I found it amongst my father's things, and I was curious."

"Who is your father?" she demanded, her question sharp as a shard of glass.

"Er, I'm not sure I should say," he faltered, grasping for a sliver of control. "He has recently passed away."

Her response was immediate, devoid of even a hint of sympathy. "Well, who was your father?" she asked again, the question a command, not an inquiry.

Simon felt the last vestiges of his resistance dissolve. Just like he could never resist his father's demands, he found himself utterly unable to defy the will of this woman on the phone. The name fell from his lips like a confession. "Charles Holden.”

Miriam smiled to herself on the sofa, a predator's glint in her eye. She loved it when men were on the back foot from her verbal assault, and this was particularly sweet. Her whiny son, who had refused to go against his father's wishes and had cut off all contact, was falling directly into their trap, saving them the considerable trouble of having to hunt him down. She would ensure he walked willingly to the gallows, convinced he was acting out of duty. She put her game face on, her voice transforming into the cool, commanding tone of Mistress Genevieve.

"Ahh, Charles," she said, drawing the name out with a theatrical purr. "One of my favorite naughty boys." She clapped a hand over her mouth to stop the laugh that was building up, a wave of giddy, triumphant hysteria washing over her. She hadn't seen her ex-husband since the day he disowned her and her daughter, though it seemed he had thought about them; what else could explain the card? The irony of referring to him in the past tense while tormenting his son was almost too delicious to bear.

"Er, what do you mean?" Simon stuttered, completely bewildered.

"I think we need to talk, boy," she commanded, ignoring his question. "Be at the corner of Boley Hill and St. Margaret's Street, tomorrow evening at 7 o'clock."

"What?" stammered Simon, his mind reeling. "No, I can't—"

"Now, Simon, isn't it?" she cut him off, her voice dropping to a menacing whisper. "Don't be late. Because you will not want the local press getting a phone call from me about the private life of the upstanding Charles Holden."

The line went dead.

Simon stood frozen, the phone still pressed to his ear. The silence that followed was a roaring void. What was his father into? The question bounced around his skull like a frantic, terrified bird. He knew he had to go. Out of a warped sense of duty to his father and his reputation, he had to keep this woman appeased. After all, if it were simple blackmail, he had the money. But this felt different, more personal. He was a pawn in a game he didn't understand, at the whim of a woman who held all the cards.

Chloe looked at her mother, her expression mirroring Miriam's predatory glee. Miriam smiled back, a wide, triumphant curve of her lips. "The little prick is coming to us."

Chloe let out a peal of delighted laughter and threw her arms around her mother's neck. They kissed, a deep, passionate kiss that was both a celebration of their victory and a transgression that should never have been shared between mother and daughter. It was a kiss forged in shared exile and sealed by mutual power, a secret language that belonged only to them.

Miriam pulled away first, her eyes bright with excitement. "Can you call David?" she asked, her voice crisp with renewed purpose. "Tell him we need a pickup tomorrow. Tell him to take the special glasses and drive him around for about an hour. He doesn't need to know how close we are to him, not just yet."

Chloe nodded, her fingers already flying across her phone screen. She called David, her mother's one-time lover, the only man they had ever met who could please both of them, individually and together. He was an ex-cop, now a highly paid security consultant, a man of formidable presence and absolute discretion who would do anything for these two ladies. When Chloe gave him the instructions, his deep voice came back smooth and unwavering. "It would be a pleasure," he said, the words laced with an understanding that went beyond the professional.

She ended the call, then nodded to Miriam. "It's on."

Miriam clapped her hands in pure, unadulterated joy, the sound sharp and triumphant in the quiet room. The game was afoot.
