Chapter 19 of 19
As Rosie looked up at the older woman, shocked, a profound silence fell over the penthouse suite. Beatrice stood nearby, her hand covering her mouth in astonishment, while Thomas and Alistair remained frozen, their eyes wide with disbelief. Rosie had never encountered such indomitable will, such commanding presence, even in the formidable Isabella who had mentored her all those years in Spain. Here was a woman who radiated power not through intimidation alone, but through an unshakeable self-assurance that captivated everyone in the room.
Erin Wilson's eyes crinkled with amusement as she surveyed the scene she had so dramatically interrupted. Then, to Rosie's complete surprise, she extended her hand. "Let me help you up, dear," she said, her voice carrying the tones of aristocratic upbringing that belied her rumored humble origins.
Rosie hesitated for only a moment before accepting the offered hand. As Erin pulled her to standing position, Rosie felt not just physical strength but something more—a magnetic energy that seemed to pulse from Erin's fingertips. It was the same kind of hypnotic power Rosie herself had been cultivating, yet somehow different, more refined, more practiced.
Erin glanced around the room at the shocked faces and laughed, a rich, melodious sound that seemed to reverberate through the penthouse walls. "Oh, do stop looking at me as if I've just descended from Olympus," she said wryly. "I've done my homework, Miss Ward. All of it."
Her gaze shifted momentarily to Thomas, who visibly flinched under her scrutiny. A slow smile spread across Erin's lips. "I see we have quite a lot in common in how the men in our lives should be treated," she remarked, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper that somehow carried across the entire room.
Rosie felt a strange kinship with this woman she had been prepared to despise. Erin Wilson—ruthless property developer, breaker of spirits, the woman who had supposedly forced a family of travelers from their land with no compassion—was revealing herself to be something else entirely.
From a designer handbag that must have cost more than Rosie's former family home, Erin produced an elegant silver cigarette case. She opened it with practiced fingers and offered one to Rosie, who took it automatically, as if mesmerized. With a flick of her thumb, Erin produced a flame from a lighter that appeared from nowhere, first lighting Rosie's cigarette, then her own. The gesture was intimate, conspiratorial, as if they had known each other for years rather than minutes.
"If you had done your research properly," Erin began, her voice now calm and measured as she exhaled a plume of smoke, "you would have discovered that when I asked the travelers to move on, a very nice family, Irish, I believe. They had two wonderful little children, bright as buttons and full of mischief."
Rosie's expression must have betrayed her skepticism, because Erin's smile widened. "I offered them a very large amount of money and an alternate site I wouldn't be developing for a couple of years. Just as a cherry on the cake, I offered to introduce them to a dear friend and sometimes lover who specializes in educating traveler children."
Rosie looked at her with a different light in her eyes, the amber glow of the lamplight catching the mixture of surprise and understanding dawning there. "The story I heard was one of a ruthless landowner who would stop at nothing to get her own way," she said softly, almost ashamed now of her assumptions.
Erin let the smoke from her cigarette find its own way out of her mouth in a slow grey-blue cloud before answering. "Sometimes it's beneficial for people to see certain things a certain way," she mused, her gaze distant for a moment. "It gives them pause for thought. Keeps them on their toes. The men who underestimate us, they need to believe we're capable of anything."
Rosie saw the sense in that immediately—it was a tactic she'd used more than once. She was about to speak, to ask more about this fascinating woman's methods, but Erin held up a hand to interrupt her.
"Listen, Miss Ward, it has been an interesting evening, but I have to head back to Kent. Busy day tomorrow." As she spoke, she moved toward the penthouse door with a natural grace that commanded attention. At the threshold, she paused and turned back to Rosie, reaching into her pocket for a black card with a gold-embossed number.
"This number belongs to an interesting group of women," she said, pressing the card into Rosie's palm. "If you receive a call from this number, you may find it advantageous to answer it."
With a final, knowing smile that seemed to contain a thousand unspoken understandings, Erin Wilson was gone, leaving behind only the faint scent of expensive perfume and tobacco, and a room full of people whose lives had just been irrevocably altered.
Rosie looked down at the card in her hand, then across at Beatrice, who was staring at her with wide eyes. The men in the room remained silent, perhaps sensing that the power dynamic had shifted yet again, this time in ways none of them could fully comprehend. In that moment, Rosie understood that her path, which had seemed so clear just hours before, had taken an unexpected turn toward something far more intriguing .
