Chapter 6

Rosie's first move was a masterpiece of subtlety, a symphony of corporate warfare played out across two continents. During her travels, she had acquired more than just skills; she had acquired assets. One such asset was a small but profitable Olive Grove in Andalusia, Spain. It was a legitimate business, producing award-winning oil, but it was also the perfect vehicle for her revenge. Under the guise of this company, 'Aceitunas del Sol,' she approached the Aldridge shipping company for a quote. It was a substantial but not unusually large order: several crates of premium olive oil destined for a new distributor she had "established" in the UK. The quote came back. Rosie accepted the terms, handling all the correspondence and paperwork herself, with impeccable corporate letterhead and professional demeanor. Nothing raised an eyebrow.

The next phase of the plan required the undesirable contacts she had cultivated during her years on the fringes. She paid a significant sum to a Balkan smuggling network to do one simple thing: pack the crates. They were instructed to fill the bottom and center of each crate with the jars of olives as ordered, but to conceal cartons of cheap, high-tar cigarettes and bottles of unbranded, duty-free liquor within them. It was a classic smuggling technique, one any competent customs inspection would catch. That was the point. She then made an anonymous call to UK Border Force, giving them the ship's name, the container number, and a vague but credible tip about contraband. She ensured the paper trail—the invoices, the emails, the shipping manifests—was flawless and led directly, and only, to Aldridge's.

The container was flagged as it came into Felixstowe. UK customs officers swarmed over it, and within an hour, they found the hidden cigarettes and liquor. It was a major bust, and the paperwork trail led them straight to the shipping company responsible for clearance: Aldridge & Sons. The investigation was swift and brutal. Charles Aldridge was brought in for questioning under caution, his bluster about corporate responsibility collapsing under the weight of evidence he couldn't possibly have falsified. He swore he was being framed, but the paperwork was too perfect, the trail too direct. The story was too good to keep quiet. Rosie leaked the story to the local press, and the Kent Messenger ran with the headline: "Aldridge & Sons at Center of Multi-Million Pound Smuggling Ring."

The fallout was immediate and catastrophic, a perfect mirror of the social destruction they had inflicted upon Rosie. Charles was forced to step down from the board of his own company, his own directors viewing him as a liability. The charities he had chaired, the institutions he had graced with his name and his money, all quietly and publicly asked him to step down until "the matter was cleared." His name, once synonymous with integrity, was now mud. Geraldine's world crumbled just as quickly. The WI, that bastion of genteel respectability, asked her to "temporarily relinquish her duties" to avoid bringing the organization into disrepute. The invitations dried up. The phone calls from their so-called friends stopped. They discovered, just as Rosie had, how few real friends they had when the tide turned. They were learning, in the most painful way possible, that shit sticks, regardless of the truth. And from her house in Maidstone, cup of tea in hand, Rosie followed every news report, every whispered gossip column, with a serene smile. It was a start. But it was only the beginning.
