The weeks that followed was filled with various preparations, both too busy that neither
suggested to spend time in their shared virtual play-space.
The first step was an upload of Moira's genetic profile, which was a routine task.
Yet even though a clone could be quickly gestated for medical use, when an organ was
needed for transplantation.
Such a body would not be fit to place a consciousness in, as both bones and the brain
would be undeveloped. And the roles of their relationship demanded that the clone
would not be appear young either. So they decided to give the process a full two months,
which was the minimum time - and even then it was only possible with an extensive use
of micro-machinery.
To keep Pilar updated, Moira had sent a complete sensorium of her preparations.
Pilar sat down closed her eyes and played those back, experiencing what her Mistress had
been up to during the previous days.
*****
Moira inspected her actual body that was resting in the asteroid cave, first with cameras
only. But with the plan set in motion, she also activated the awakening sequence that
included muscle training and fitness so that she could return in a fully functional body.
Then she filed a request for bodily work, and was surprised to have the application
granted in only a few weeks. It turned out that there was a shortage of personnel both
for robot maintenance as well as He3 pilots.
Moira immediately applied for the job as a pilot. And started the process of uploading her
mind to her original body.
Though the job was slightly dangerous, the job of a pilot did not require extensive training;
The major part of any flight was managed by ai systems, and the human pilot's role was
more of an overseer. In most cases, the pilot only had to choose between options the ship
provided.
This did not mean that she did not have to practice flying the scramjet’s in a simulator,
after some days she was provided with the experience of an older pilot uploaded to the
co-processor implant in her head.
Even so, a pilot from an earlier age would have found this rushed flight education to be
laughably short and superficial.
Not that Moira intended to complete her training, all she needed was enough experience
and knowledge to handle the ship in open space.
She spent late hours studying various flight that would reach the quantum gate, she was
only slightly surprised when the AI teacher reacted by asking why she was studying flights
that were so far outside the normal parameters.
Moira had anticipated the need to reply quickly before the AI notified a supervisor.
So she had an answer prepared: “In case I would end up in the wrong belt, and the strong
jetwinds transport me around the planet. I would have to consider docking at alternative
stations. So far I have only made simulations for reaching the small hub
at the quantum gate. But I intended to do flight paths for the hydrophonic farm station
and the others also.”
The AI replied: “You did not consider that the winds in the fastest belts blow around the
planet in a mere 12 hours? You could simply delay your return flight by half a day at most
and arrive at your intended delivery point?”
Since Moira already had the scenario saved, and intended to break off from the flight plan
already on the outbound leg, she agreed with the AI and closed the simulation.
“Ok that takes care of that.” She told herself, while still hoping that no person in charge
would be notified. Even though the small fleet of ships were running on a skeleton crew,
there could be complications if the managers decided to keep an extra close eye on her.
Though she felt certain that no one had any knowledge about the plans she had made
together with Pilar. Any attempt of wiretapping a quantum connection would immediately
be exposed.
This built in as an integral part from the very nature of such communication, they could be
intercepted, but the user would always know about it. This fact has led authorities
everywhere to keep their hands off what the citizens did online.
Nonetheless, she had conducted a search for information for any possible cases of
someone actually stealing a spaceship in any system they were in contact with. She found
no example of theft even of any minor ship in the last 50 years, and thanked her lucky star
that she lived in a system that was so loosely organised as the one she called home.
Then again, Moira told herself, such information might have been hidden from public view
to avoid copycat criminals. Not that she considered herself to be one, her intention was
rather to borrow the ship and make certain it could be retrieved by any crew later.
The following day, and to her surprise, she found that she had gotten a commendation for
creative thinking with the alternative flight paths. Moira cursed; her intention had been to
appear unremarkable in order to avoid drawing undue attention to herself.
*****
The sensor recording ended and Pilar smiled for the shrewd behaviour, now that she had
been made up to date on how the preparations were progressing on the other end she left
the inductor ring on her head while she carried out minor tasks while awaiting Moira's call.
Moira made contact only a short while later, but as soon Moira got visual contact with
Pilar she simply gawked for a moment before asking.
“Have you really tattooed yourself in the same manner as I used in our virtual scenario?”
“Are you not pleased to see me like this?”
“I admire your commitment, but was taken back that you've gotten to such lengths.”
Replied Moira.
“Oh it's nothing said Pilar. Thank you though, but no I have no tattoos whatsoever.”
“What is it I am seeing then, it's not actually you? You're sending an image of a
virtual construct?” “....Or wait! It's that an overlay on your video feed?”
“Neither!” replied Pilar and giggled.
“Ok you had me there, and you claim it's the real you I see.”
Pilar nodded but said nothing.
“Bodypaint?”
“Wrong again.” The tattoo marks faded, and Pilar's skin returned to its natural color.
“How the heck did you do that then?”
“Oh it's nothing, I took the patterns from our session, and instructed the micromachines
in my body to replicate the look.”
“Wow! So your medical tech is so advanced that each machine is fully programmable?”
“Not really, in fact I don't think that's even hypothetically possible. There's not enough
atoms for a full processor.”
“My stunt can only be done when I sit here or on my bed, where a field map the location
on each micromachine and tell each one what to do with ultrasound commands.”
“I see, a bloody nifty trick anyway.”
“You have nothing similar?”
“Not really, we got micromachines that deliver drugs and can do repairs and internal
surgery, but only when controlled by one autodoc.”
“So what looks will you give to my clone?” Asked Moira. “The same looks as I used for
the avatar.”
“Well I have gotten used to you being blond and blue eyed, so we’ll use your genotype
and that’s what I am aiming for in general. But I do intend to make some changes.”
“I see, will there be any tattoos?” Moira asked with a taunting voice.
Pilar giggled: “Don’t tempt me, but there's none, only a slight change to your looks
that have you fit better with the aesthetics on this world.”
“Someone once said that it is the slave who’s in control,' said Moira. 'I guess I literally
will have to live with that. So go ahead, pimp my genes!”
Pilar grinned and played along with the idea: “Yeah sure! I’ll give you the looks of a
pimpette.”
“Well seriously this do not concern my wishes that much. It's more about having you
to fit in. Only a very small population here are naturals, I guess you picked that look
for your avatar to make it realistic. But we’re so far gone with our hedonist style, that
most have their facials and bodies remodeled to classic looks.”
“Oh I can live with that.” Replied Moira, while feeling a bit uncertain how she would
feel about watching herself in a mirror for the first time. “As long as you don’t make
me 3 meters tall, with four legs and three arms I will be all happy.”
Pilar laughed at this silly comment that eased the tension she had felt, as she had
done several alternations without consulting Moira first, not that either couldn’t have
been undone with a rather simple adjustment.
“Don’t you worry, your bonestructure is the same as your genotype. The changes are
minor and only to your nose and the lines around your eyes.” Pilar stopped talking as
she wondered how she would present one small piece of genetic data she had uncovered.
“I am in fact surprised that you look the way you do right now.”
“That might have to do with my birthplace, open space and low gravity messed up my
phenotype and I actually did change it in the first years after our arrival here. So don’t you
worry about some small changes, I have already made adjustments and your clone might
actually be closer to my true self than anything before.'”
“I am relieved to hear that.' said Pilar, now I wish you good luck with the other things you
need to do there. I wish I could help but I am a bit too far away for lending a hand.”
“Don’t worry about that.” Moira said.
“It’s the thought that matters. Whip you later my love.”
“Thank you Mistress, looking forward to that.” Said Pilar. And with that final phrase they
ended their conversation. The following day they went down into their shared illusion to
have a last session as android Mistress and slave. Which also provided the proof of concept
that Moira's mind safely could be transmitted between the worlds.
