Chapter 10

In that part of the country, some people said Hell had once been a real place.

Not a figure of speech. An actual territory. A pit with walls and a name, as real as Juárez, as real as the stone that now held Steve and Kaylah. The story went that it had been destroyed—ripped open, emptied out, undone—and that its inhabitants survived the unmaking. The fire died. The jailers walked free.

Men like Captain José Torres, they said, were what was left.

Not born so much as set loose. Demons released onto the earth when the old prison of the damned came down, who chose to wear badges and skin and speak excellent English, who learned the new geography of their war. Sulfur was gone. They had corridors now. Pitchforks were gone. They had product, and a black box, and two cells side by side.

In that telling, Torres did not simply hate what Steve and Kaylah stood for.

He knew it on sight.

Virtue was the world that had closed off the hunting grounds of men like him and Señor López. A marriage, a cross, an untouched life: these were not innocent facts. They were enemy colors. To take the good wife and turn her into a promiscuous thing from his dose was not mere cruelty. It was restoration—Hell working its old trade in a world that claimed the pit had been sealed.

Whether the story was true no longer mattered.

This place conducted itself as though it were.

Torres moved through it with the patience of something that remembered confinement and had learned to reverse it.

Steve and Kaylah stood for the world that tried to shut Torres and Señor López out of their business. Torres meant to lock that world in his cells and ruin it.

Kaylah was the target: virtue turned into sex and addiction, the good wife unmade by his product.

Steve was the true audience: a husband destroyed not by the dose itself, but by being made to watch his wife’s virtue stolen and her fall unfold.

Reggie had been recruited for that torment. He was Torres’s soldier in the cage, placed with Kaylah so the torment would have a body. Steve would have no way to call the nightmare abstract as he watched his wife not only get high, but have repeated intercourse with another man, brought to multiple orgasms by his enormous penis.

Torres had staged this scenario enough times. The adjoining cells, the witness-husband, the woman given over to the product, the recruited man left in with her—none of it was invention born of a single arrest. It was a method he already trusted. He knew the sequence as a butcher knows an animal’s joints. He knew what Kaylah would become when the doses stacked and the will thinned. He knew what Steve would become when watching replaced saving. The outcome was not in doubt. Only its hour.

The husband would break soon enough. His drive was building, and sooner or later he would give in to it—would start masturbating while watching his wife and Reggie together in the next cell, unable to stop himself. That was the design. That was what Torres wanted. Until the process finished and bore its rotten fruit, Torres would keep confined what had once confined him, and work its corruption to the bone.

The solitary light in the corridor buzzed like a dying wasp, stuttering as Kaylah stirred, blinking against its dull glare. Cold bars, gray stone walls, her cellmate standing near them in his green jail clothes, watching her naked body. Her bare backside showed plainly in the dim light—an unintended offering, laid out for him without her asking.

“When did the light come on?” she groaned, reaching for the sheet that had slipped off her during the night, stiff in places where their dried fluids had soaked into it. She pulled it over herself and got up from the tangled heap she’d slept in, her face going red.

The blush wasn’t innocence coming back. It was knowledge arriving too late, with nowhere to go. The drugs were still wearing off; her mind stayed fogged, leaving her stranded between two states—able to feel shame before she could think clearly enough to understand it.

She wrapped the soiled sheet around herself and sat inside it like a woman trying to hide after the hiding had already failed. The cell gave her no privacy. It only gave her the awareness that she needed some.

Steve was on the other side of the bars.

She didn’t look there yet.

The blush itself was a kind of wound: proof that the high was loosening its grip, and that the self Torres meant to destroy could still, this hour, feel how far it had been dragged.

“’Bout 20 minutes back,” her cellmate said, his voice a low rumble.

She rose with the sheet still clutched around her.

Its stained patches came with her—ugly relics of hours she couldn’t fully claim. She gathered her scattered clothes the way she gathered her thoughts: silently, one piece at a time, never sure which belonged to the night and which to the drug’s lying theater.

The pink briefs lay by her cellmate’s foot.

A small, ugly proof. A reminder of how deeply he’d been allowed to violate her.

“Could you hand me my panties?”

The words embarrassed her as they left her mouth. They were too ordinary for what they meant—a fragile, humiliating bridge thrown across the quiet toward the man who’d been inside of her. Tension hummed in the cell. Fabric rustled. Breath stayed shallow.

In the adjoining cell, Steve had already seen everything. He’d already heard everything. He’d already smelled his once faithful wife having sex with another man. That knowledge sat on his side of the bars like a fourth occupant.

Kaylah’s memories did not sit so clearly. They came fogged and scattered—blurred images, scraps of pressure, ecstasy, light—a night that wouldn’t hold still long enough to become testimony. She could not have sworn, in that moment, what had actually been done to her and what had only been a hallucination poured into her veins.

The uncertainty did not make her safer.

It only left her asking a stranger for her own clothes while her husband, a few feet away, already knew the answer she was afraid to know.

Her cellmate crouched, the material of her panties a cool whisper against his calloused fingers. A slow grin spread across his face as he brought the fabric to his nose, breathing in deep. The scent was still there—her scent. “Mmm,” he hummed, low and satisfied. “Smells like you.” His tongue wet his lips. “Tastes like you, too. Remember how you shook when I had my mouth on you? Gonna be doin’ that a lot.” He held the underwear out to her, not letting go right away, forcing her to pull.

She snatched them, face burning, and turned her back to him, fumbling beneath the sheet to put them on. Her movements were hurried, defensive.

“Had myself a real good time with you,” his voice cut through the quiet, smug and sure. “You came around after a while. How many times was it? How many times you cum for me?”

She kept her back to him, jaw clenched, saying nothing. The memories were foggy but undeniable—the wetness between her legs, the involuntary clenching, the cries she hadn’t meant to release.

He moved closer, his voice dropping to a growl. “I asked you a question. How many?”

“I don’t know,” she whispered, the words cracking.

“Eleven,” he said, grinning. “Bet I’m the first brotha ever had that white pussy. Now every time you get fucked, you gonna be wishin’ it was me.” His words hung in the air, ugly and deliberate.

“You’re disgusting!”

She spat the words at him then turned away as if she could erase him from the cell. The dim corridor light offered no comfort, only clarity. Her eyes found Steve’s through the bars.

It was worse than facing her attacker.

The heat returned to her cheeks—shame at her near nakedness, at the stained sheet, at the ordinary exchange she’d just had with the man who’d raped her. A sob broke from her throat, then another, helpless and small. “I’m sorry, Steve,” she choked out. “What did they do to me last night? Why is he doing this to us?”

The questions lingered in the space between cells, fragile and raw. She needed Steve to explain her own violation, to make sense of the captain’s cruelty. Steve had witnessed it all—but having seen didn’t mean he could speak it. Torres’s design was unfolding exactly as intended: she was being unmade, and Steve was being forced to watch.

Reggie remained silent, a dark shape against the gray stone. Steve understood the arithmetic of it—the heavy drugging, the stranger left in her cell, the reason for his blackness and youth. Kaylah did not. Her mind, still clearing, sought answers where there were only instruments.

She had questions. They had terror. What they lacked was the context of war—the quiet life they’d lived, the votes they’d cast, the bumper stickers on their Lexus that had drawn a line in some distant sand. Their innocence made them perfect sufferers. It left them unable to read the cruelty like text.

Reggie knew.

He sat listening as she spoke to her husband, her voice fraying at the edges. Kaylah still had a narrow ledge of sobriety; she didn’t feel how thin it was. Steve didn’t either. Reggie did. He knew Torres would return. He knew the black box would come back. He knew what became of women like her here—that this raw morning talk, her apologies, her why, was only intermission.

They still spoke like there was a future. There wasn’t. For her, only the needle and the bed. For him, the watching.

Torres approached balancing three trays, his uniform crisp, hair slicked neatly back. “Buenos días,” he said, eyes lingering on Kaylah’s disheveled form. “Getting to know your new boyfriend better, I see.”

Her stomach tightened.

“He is not my boyfriend. Please,” she said, voice trembling, face flushed as she avoided his gaze. “Put me with my husband. Or another cell. I can’t stay here.”

Torres regarded her with a clean, almost polite calm.

“That is not possible, señorita. You no longer have a husband. You have a boyfriend now, sharing this cell with you.”

“No, I don’t! And my name is Señora Jordan!”

He gave her a thin smile. The previous night she had insisted on the title—señora, the married woman—and he had tucked that away. Now he handed the girl-name back to her the way one reclaims a gift.

The courtesy came edged with contempt, and his voice never climbed.

“The prison is overcrowded. Space is scarce. You receive no special treatment. In time you will learn to accept and love your boyfriend, Reggie.”

"He's not my boyfriend and I'll never do that!"

He pushed two trays under her door and a third under Steve’s. The plates rattled—a small, ordinary sound in a place that had no business containing it.

“Eat, señorita. You are a mess.”

The air sat heavy with sweat and rot.

“You’re insane!” Kaylah looked down the corridor at the empty cells standing open like graves nobody had bothered to fill. “This place is deserted!”

“Torres.” Steve’s voice came through the bars, wrecked from a night of screaming until nothing was left to scream with. “Look at me. That’s my wife. She told you what to call her. Señora. You don’t get to take that from her too. You don’t leave her in there with him. If you want something from us, you deal with me.”

Silence followed. The light buzzed, a mean little pulse, until Torres spoke again, low and even, still refusing Steve the courtesy of turning all the way around.

“Steve talks tough, señorita. But his safety and how he is treated depend mostly on you.”

He turned to Reggie with a crooked grin.

“How did your girlfriend treat you last night?”

He asked it as though the answer were entertainment. It was not a question. Torres already knew. He had scripted the night beforehand: the cartel’s product to take her mind, and that quieter additive in the doses to make her own body an accomplice—sensitivity and wetness she would never have asked for, answers she would have refused if refusal had still belonged to her. He did not need Reggie’s report.

He wanted Steve to hear it.

He wanted Kaylah, fresh with daylight shame, to stand there while last night was discussed like a meal.

Reggie’s mouth began its curl into the smirk Torres had expected.

In the next cell, Steve understood the question for what it was: not curiosity.

A continuation of his wife’s humiliation.

“She warmed up real nice after them shots you gave her. Got real wet and came for me more than 11 times, I reckon.”

“Don’t you talk about her like that.”

Steve’s fury struck the bars and went nowhere.

“Kaylah. Look at me. You didn’t do this. He’s doing this. They put that poison in you so you couldn’t fight. That’s the point. They want to—”

He stopped.

The rest had already risen too close to his teeth: what Torres meant to make of her, what the watching was for, what last night had been designed to become. She was looking at him through daylight and shame, asking why, and he understood, almost too late, that explanation could do another kind of damage.

The unfinished sentence hung in the corridor like a door he would not open.

Torres nearly smiled.

“All of you eat.”

He did not raise his voice. The cruelty sat in his eyes instead. Even the food trays served his plan. Steve’s meal was no kindness—it was bait, dosed to stir him up while he watched. Reggie’s plate held the same sildenafil, a tool to keep the man going, a soldier on rations in the small cell with her. Kaylah would get hers again soon, though not from the tray—from the needle, laced with something extra to open her up, to make her wet without her asking and without her say.

“You’ll shower soon, señorita.”

He had run this before. He knew how the title worked when you repeated it alongside the doses—señora fading, señorita taking root, a new name sliding onto the finger where her rings had been.

The marriage was already stolen. He didn’t need to take it twice.

He only needed her to start answering to the word that said it was over.

Her fingers wrapped the bars. “You planted those drugs for your dirty game,” she said, chin up, refusing to bend.

“You’re wrong, Señorita Kaylah.” His voice came out flat. “The drugs we found in your SUV after we towed it would put you and your former husband in Mexican prison for twenty-five years at least. And prison is the least of your worries. Cooperate, or I hand Steve over to Lopez for payback. Comprende?”

“There were no drugs,” she said, eyes hot. “You’re lying.”

“A simple drug test will show cocaine, fentanyl, and a few other things in your system,” he said with a laugh. “If Señor López hears your ex-husband was moving Morales Cartel product through his territory, he won’t let Steve rot in a cage. They’ll open him up slow, one piece at a time, and chain you to the wall so you watch every cut. Now shut your mouth and eat. Down here, food is a privilege.”

Torres turned and walked off.

“No, wait! Don’t leave me here!” Kaylah begged.

The stone gave her plea back and nothing else as Torres disappeared.

Reggie tried a softer tone, as if pity might bridge something between them.

“Sucks, you two catchin’ blame for somethin’ neither of you did.”

Kaylah looked at him with contempt that needed no translation.

“Don’t act like you’re on our side.” The words came out ragged. “You raped me in front of my husband. We have nothing to say to you. You animal.”

What Kaylah knew was enough.

The man in her cell. The night she couldn’t fully recall. The smirk. The way he had told Torres—in front of Steve—how her body had answered him last night.

Reggie’s false kindness died where it stood. He was no fellow prisoner with a theory about their charges. He was the man Torres had left with her, and she would not let him wear a human face in front of her or her husband.

Reggie got off the bunk and came toward her.

Kaylah backed up until the bars between the cells hit her spine. She gripped the iron as if it could still be a husband’s protection. It couldn’t. The gloom only made Reggie bigger.

“You raped me, you disgusting pig,” she said again. “Keep away from me!”

His hand closed on her arm.

He hauled her off the bars and out of Steve’s grasp, dragging her back toward the bunk as if the morning’s talk had been nothing but an intermission. She went down hard—pulled off her feet, across his knees like something being reclaimed.

“Kaylah—!”

Steve’s voice tore itself raw and failed. What came out was barely louder than a shouted conversation, a ruined throat still trying to scream. His hands found only iron and empty air.

The empty cells down the corridor stayed shut.

Reggie had not been asked to comfort her.

He had been left there to continue.

“You my girlfriend now, baby. We gonna fuck like rabbits together.”

“No, let go of me! I’ll never be yours! What are you doing? Stop!” she cried, thrashing against him.

He yanked down the scrub pants they’d given her, baring her pink briefs and sculpted ass. “Shut the fuck up, bitch. You respect me, I’ll be nice to you. But you sayin’ I raped you when your little white pussy slobbered all over my big Black cock last night beggin’ for it? Time we knock that white privilege outta you.”

His hand broke across her cheek, and she cried out, the mark of it rising red.

“Did I rape you or love you?” No give in his voice.

“You raped me, you sick son-of-a-bitch!” she sobbed, tears hot on her face.

Another slap landed on the other cheek, and she bit her lip to blood. “Please!” she begged.

He did not hear her, or did not care.

Steve tried to scream and got almost nothing.

Each try came out weaker than the one before, a ruined throat pouring itself out on air. He watched Reggie punish her—Kaylah dragged down, made to suffer in front of him as much as for herself—and his voice gave way under the weight of a night and morning that had already taken everything from it.

What came out of him now was only a scraped, dying sound.

It did not stop Reggie.

It did not reach Torres.

It only told the corridor that the husband was still awake, and that even his outrage had been worn down to something the stone could ignore.

“Do you love me?” Reggie demanded of Steve’s wife, pinning her wrists as she tried to cover her tender flesh.

“No!” she shot back, holding fast.

The blows came down in a brutal rhythm, welting her skin, his questions hammering the same loop. The cell became a torture den for both Kaylah and her husband, each strike pressing her deeper into Reggie’s grip. She prayed for release as her body failed.

Reggie took his time spanking her, each precise strike turning her ass a fiery red, power running through him…

Afterwards she lay broken and sobbing while he stroked the heat coming off her skin in front of her husband.

“I’m sorry I lied about you, Reggie,” she choked out.

He pushed hair from her tear-streaked face and gentled. “Who you love, baby?”

“I-I love you, Reggie,” she whispered, defeated in front of Steve. “You’re my boyfriend. I’ll be good—your girl. I’ll do whatever you ask.”

“What about your Steve?”

“I-I belong t-to you now,” she said, the words dragged out of her, and Steve’s head sank lower on his neck as he listened.

“Did I rape you?” He stared at her, waiting.

“N-no.” She shook her head. “You didn’t rape me—you loved me, made me cum.” The lies he’d beaten into her came out in pieces, fear showing through every gap.

He grinned and pulled her panties down to her knees, spread her buttocks apart, and worked a finger against the tight ring of her anus. “You like this, baby?” He watched her squirm and moan against his hand.

“Ah… oh… uh… I don’t know…” she whimpered, disgust fighting with what the truth would cost her.

His fingers slid forward to her folds, still slick from the drugs Torres had put in her arm that morning. “Mm, your pussy drippin’ again. That the spankin’ or my finger on your tight little asshole?”

She said nothing. The shame was a rope around her neck.

“Oh, my Christian girlfriend shy now?” He slid one finger into her vagina and drooled onto her anus before pushing a second into her sphincter, taking both holes at once.

“Ah… uh… no… p-please… not there…” she gasped in front of Steve, eyes wide, revulsion washing over her.

“Gonna make you like it eventually, baby,” he said, enjoying how little she could do. “Christians don’t do anal—but you will, and eventually you'll like it. Gonna make you cum hard first thing in the mornin’, get you relaxed for the day.”

“Uh… oh… no… don’t…” Her hips jerked against him, wetness soaking into his pants as he whispered filth into her ear and worked the now-sober Kaylah toward climax in front of her husband. She fought it; he pinned her flat and used her like a toy while she bucked in shame.

“That it—cum good for me, baby,” he growled.

“See how much your little wife likes this?” he asked Steve.

“Naaah… aaah… p-please… don’t… uuuh,” she moaned, coming apart under his hands as he drove her through one peak and then another, a third, a fourth, until she lay shaking and emptied out.

“Get up, baby,” he sneered, lifting her off him. She scrambled to her feet with shame burning in her cheeks.

“That oughta cheer you up some,” he taunted. “What be wrong? Didn’t you cum hard enough?”

She wouldn’t answer him with Steve watching. Not this time.

“Answer me, bitch, ‘fore I spank you again,” he snapped.

“It was enough,” she said, keeping her head down so he couldn’t see her face.

“Enough what?” His grin widened.

“I climaxed enough.” The words came out small, and she hated every one of them.

“Mm-hm. And look what your pussy did to my pants—soaked ’em. Felt good, didn’t it?”

“No, it didn’t… I didn’t like it. You’re sick—evil and disgusting,” she said, her voice breaking on the last word.

“You moaned like a dog in heat and now you say it wasn’t good? I know when a woman’s lyin’, baby—and you got me hard all over again just lettin’ me do that to you.”

"I didn't let you do anything," she hissed.

He peeled off his uniform right there in front of her and Steve, his huge cock bobbing free as his pants dropped around his ankles.

“Come over here and sit on my lap—practice takin’ my cock in your pussy like you did last night. Show your husband what I taught you. Gonna keep ruinin’ that pussy with big Black cock. You gonna ride me while we eat breakfast. Captain said make sure you eat every crumb.”

She stared at him, hate burning in her eyes.

“Wipe that look off your face ‘fore I smack it off, and get over here ‘fore I beat your ass!”

His roar broke the last of her resistance. She glanced at Steve for help, but he wouldn’t look up—just hung his head like a dog that’s given up. Fear made her move; she knew waiting meant worse.
