Chapter 9

“Huh?” The word was thick in Kaylah's mouth. Consciousness returned not as clarity but as a slow, sickening dawning. The shadows still clung to the cell, deep and unchanged. A steady drip from the faucet marked time in the hollow dark. Behind her, Reggie's weight shifted on the thin mattress, his hand closing around her knee, lifting her leg without resistance. “Please,” she whispered, the sound barely there. “What are you doing?”

“Damn, you keep makin’ me hard, baby,” Reggie rasped, his voice thick in the dark. “Ain’t never been like this before.”

It was still night—somewhere near four, that hour when shadows grow teeth and silence hangs like a threat. The fog in her head had finally begun lifting. Not with sun. With stone-cold stillness and the rhythm of a stranger’s breath against her neck.

What filled the emptiness wasn’t relief. It was revulsion, hot and sour in her throat, and a fear so deep it felt like cold water in her lungs. They tangled together until she couldn’t tell one from the other. Fragments of what he’d said—or done—in the black hours clung to her like sweat.

She was awake now. Fully. Cruelly.

She could feel the sheet under her skin. She could count the slow drips from the faucet. She could remember Steve—his name like a cut—and understand exactly where she was, and who was with her. Being clear didn’t erase what had happened. It made it real. And it wasn’t over.

In the dark of four in the morning, she aimed her anger where she had always aimed her prayers—upward, at God. For the corridor. For Torres and his drugs. For the bars that kept her husband near enough to hear and too far to do anything. For letting any of it happen. The words that left her were not a prayer. They were an accusation. Her faith did not shatter in one blow there in the abyss.

It began to come apart slowly.

One strand at a time, like the chain that used to hold the cross around her neck.

“What?” The word broke out of her, half disbelief, half protest. “You can’t be hard again. I’m not doing anything to you. Please, just leave me alone.” She shook as he moved her, drawing her sideways against him, hooking her leg over the crook in his elbow, spreading her thighs wide once more. She stiffened, cold dread sitting in her like a stone.

“Why are you doing this? I don’t want to… I have a husband…please in the next cell, no more…” Her whisper went nowhere in the dark, swallowed by the endless round of violation and weariness, every minute a fresh taunt from the shadows.

“You ain’t married no more, baby. I’m your boyfriend now, ‘member?”

“What time is it?” she asked, voice unsteady, reaching for something solid to hold onto.

“‘Bout four, I reckon,” he said, careless as a man naming the weather. “Now take my cock and put me in your sweet, little pussy again, baby.”

“No… I won’t do that anymore,” she said, defiance rising through her fear. “You’re not my husband. You disgust me. Leave me alone.”

The lights slammed on.

After so long in the dark, the light came in like a hand slap. Steve kept his eyes slitted and let his body go slack, the way a sleeping man’s does. Through his lashes he could see the bunk in the next cell: Reggie and Kaylah, both naked, Kaylah on her side with Reggie curled behind her, her leg hooked up over his elbow before he let it drop.

Her knee snapped down, a frantic shield against the sudden glare. But the light had already done its work, exposing the slick, glistening evidence of her body’s unwilling betrayal. Steve saw it all: the dark, heavy shape of him against her pale thigh, her pink open wetness that glistened under the bulb, the blunt tip of him still pressed close to where he had been seeking entry.

Footsteps in the corridor again.

Not the aimless shuffle of a jail at night. These had a direction. Slow, unhurried, coming toward the cell where everything Kaylah had once been was already bleeding out.

Torres first. One guard. Then the orderly carrying the small black box Kaylah recognized—the thing that delivered that bright, erasing light, that took a woman’s mind and gave her back a fake heaven instead. In Torres’s war it wasn’t medical equipment. It was a weapon pointed at what little of her was left.

They came in while she had nothing left to cover herself with.

“Nooh!”

A raw scream clawed its way out of her, a sound too alive for the dead stone. Her eyes locked on the black box, and she knew. They weren’t just making her high this time—they were taking the disgust still sour in her mouth, the fractured prayer, the self she’d only just dragged back from the dark. She wouldn’t go. Not if it were her choice.

It wasn’t.

“Steve—help me!”

“Do not call for him,” Torres said, his voice flat. “He is not your husband. Reggie is your boyfriend now. You will love him. You will do what he tells you. You will learn to like it.”

“Never! I love my husband! I love my husband—get your filthy hands off me! Steve! STEVE—wake up! Wake up, please, God, wake up—don’t let them! Don’t you dare let them!”

She called his name and the sound hit the bars and got nothing back. Steve kept his body slack on the bunk and despised every second of it. To stand, to let her see his open eyes, would be to admit he had been lying there awake in the dark, that he had heard everything, that he had watched what he could not prevent—and that he was going to watch the next cruelty too. So helplessness put on sleep’s mask and kept it on.

Reggie and the guard forced her down onto the stained mattress. The orderly opened the box.

Kaylah saw what she needed to see.

She knew what was coming.

The second dose went into her the way the first had: not as medicine, not even as violence she could name before it was too late, but as an invasion that swelled into a flood.

The euphoria came back in one bright rush—too soon, too total, a light that had weight. It pressed her down under its own sweetness. She had only just recovered the ability to feel disgust, only just taken her horror back into her own hands, and now the high took it from her with the quiet assurance of something that knew it would return.

There was nowhere to hide inside it.

No room of her mind the light did not reach.

The woman who had raged at God in the four o’clock dark was still there, briefly, like a face under ice. Then the ice thickened. Pleasure that was not hers took the place where refusal should have been. She rose into it against her will, and the rising was the horror: to pass from terror into bliss, and to know, in the last seconds before knowing left her, that this mercy was the trap.

Steve did not move.

The lights stayed on long enough for Steve to see too much.

Her voice, if it kept going, would soon belong to something other than her. But her voice did not return as words.

From the next cell it was horrible.

Steve heard his wife’s voice lose its human use—mewling, nonsensical, unformed, the sound of someone still alive and already far gone. A throat that minutes ago could scream his name now made noise without meaning. It was the sound of Kaylah going under.

Kaylah did not hear it that way.

The shining flood had closed over her. She could no longer see the cell, or the men in it, or the evil being done to her. She could no longer feel the horror that would have named it. Language went first—plea, prayer, Steve—and after language went the judgment that told one sound from another.

What filled her was only euphoria: vast, crushing, complete. She no longer knew it as distress. She knew it as light.

The terror remained in the room.

It no longer remained in her.

The realization hit Steve with the force of a physical blow. Torres served Señor Lopez, and the Cartel’s business wasn’t just narcotics—it was flesh. Kaylah’s beauty, once her most radiant quality, had become a commodity to be processed and traded. He understood now: the drugs were part of a refined system, a methodical unraveling of will. How many others had been broken this way? How long before Kaylah stopped resisting Reggie—or the next man Torres brought in? The question burned: why keep him alive? To make him watch. To use his agony as one more leash on her.

After they had injected her again. Steve knew what came next. The needle had slid home, and soon her knees would loosen, her speech dissolve into helpless sound. She and Reggie would pick up where they’d left off—Reggie showing her things she’d never learned as Steve’s wife, while she made those small wet noises in her throat, like an animal twitching in its sleep. Later, she wouldn’t recall any of it. That was the true cruelty: how the process worked, subtle as decay, turning revulsion into reflex until her body answered on its own, until she arched toward what she once fought.

Torres, the guard, and the orderly stepped back, leaving her naked on the mattress.

Reggie’s huge black cock had gone soft, but it still glistened from its time inside Steve’s wife, hanging slack but still impossibly thick and long. He climbed back onto the mattress with her.

Steve watched as Reggie turned Kaylah onto her side and settled in behind her. He hooked a hand under her knee and raised her leg, and Steve caught the wet pink flash of her as she opened again for her cellmate. Through the bars there was no doubt what Reggie meant to do.

Kaylah had come back too far before. Clear-headed, she’d had a mind that could say no, and she’d used it. Torres had not allowed that refusal to stand. Now Reggie was picking up where the dark had left them—and this time Kaylah would have no refusal left to give.

She did not see Reggie’s intent, or Steve watching helplessly, or the trap closing over the woman she’d once been. The second dose had already opened its heaven. There was only light: brilliant, crushing, total. Euphoria sat where fear should have been. The cell dissolved. The meaning of the men dissolved. Even knowing she was naked and remembering how she’d fought went under the shine.

From outside, the horror was plain enough.

From inside her, nothing remained to call it by name. Only the flood, and the sweet incapacity to know she was drowning.

The iron door shut hard enough that the sound traveled the length of the corridor. The echo did not fade so much as settle, as if the building had accepted this arrangement and meant to keep it.

Torres stopped at Steve’s cell, his boots scuffing softly on the stone floor. His voice remained low, almost conversational, the English precise but carrying the faint music of Spanish beneath it.

“I know you’re awake, Señor Jordan. I imagine you wish you weren’t. A man does not sleep through that kind of screaming.” A pause, just a breath. “But by all means—keep up the performance, if it brings you comfort.”

Somewhere in the darkness behind Torres, a piece of metal settled or shifted.

“Dawn is not far off. You cannot pretend forever. When the light returns, you will watch. Reggie will continue fucking your beautiful wife in front of you. We will continue giving her what she needs to keep her receptive, and you will see what our product—and Reggie—make of her. Addiction is not a performance, Señor. It is quiet. It remains.”

Then he was gone.

A moment later the lights cut out, as if the corridor had been waiting for his leave. Darkness fell over both cells.

“Rub my dick against your clit,” Reggie whispered to her, his voice intimate and coarse. “Get me hard again.”

The sounds resumed.

Not words. Not a name. Only the raw, immediate noise of Kaylah and the man with her, carrying clearly through the bars to a husband who now understood that even pretending to sleep was no longer an option.

Steve did not move.

The dark no longer hid anything.

It only made him listen.

Reggie’s need was palpable, a heat that seemed to radiate through the bars. Steve heard the wet slide of skin on skin, the shift of weight on the thin mattress.

“There—right there, baby,” Reggie murmured.

A soft, broken sound escaped Kaylah—not refusal, not recognition, just breath shaped by sensation.

Then a sharper intake—a gasp cut short by two deep, punishing thrusts. The bedframe groaned.

“Oof—ah—n-no’… rea’y… ‘urts…”

“I know, baby. That for earlier and you refusin' me.” Reggie’s tone was half-tender, half-menacing. “You don’t remember, but I do. Now I’m pullin’ out. You gon’ guide me back in yo’self. We gon’ practice ’til you get it right.” His voice dropped lower. “You understand?”

Silence, then a shaky exhale.

Her breath hitched, the drug-thick air slowing her reply. Then another deep thrust drove the meaning home, a bloom of pain low in her belly. The bed groaned under their weight. “Oof… yesss… I underst—” she gasped, the words dissolving as her mind swam away from her.

His cock slid out of her, a wet, heavy withdrawal that left her trembling and empty. Her body clenched involuntarily at the loss until it slapped against her thigh with a soft, wet sound. “Go on now,” he murmured, his voice low and insistent. “Do like I showed you. Take me in your hand and put me back where I belong.”

Her fingers found him in the dark, wrapping around the heat and thickness of his shaft. A soft gasp escaped her as she guided him back to her entrance, her body opening with a slickness that was the drug’s doing, not her own.

“There you go,” Reggie groaned, approval thick in his voice. “Just like that. Now do like I said—when I pull out, you stroke me. Use your hand. Then put me back where I belong since I'm your boyfriend now.”

“Okeee… okeee…” Her words were slurred, half-lost. “M’rdy…”

He withdrew again, wet and heavy, leaving a glistening trail across her thigh. “Go on now. Stroke it nice.”

Her hand moved along his length, small against him, the rhythm unsteady but obedient. A low hum of pleasure began somewhere deep in her core—a traitorous warmth she didn’t choose.

“That it,” he murmured. “Get used to me. I’m all you got in here. Touch yourself with the head now—right there, yeah.”

She did, the smooth crown circling her clit, and her hips lifting slightly of their own accord. It was a response without consent, sensation without meaning—the high had hollowed out her revulsion and left only raw nerve. She felt the pleasure unfold inside her like a poison flower, beautiful and wrong. She could not hate it. That was the deepest ruin.

“That it, don’t stop,” he murmured, his hand over hers. “Feel how good that is? Now guide me back inside.”

Her breath hitched as she did, his slow entry a grotesque parody of tenderness. When he withdrew, the wet sound of his flesh against hers was unmistakable. “Now use your hand,” he whispered against her neck. “Just like before.”

A rhythm took hold in the dark—not dance but mechanism, her obedience the only thing holding her together. She trembled as she brought the head of him against herself, circling that swollen bud until her hips lifted without her consent again.

“Keep goin’ just like that,” he urged softly. “Remember, I'm your boyfriend now. Do what I tell you, and it’ll be easier.”

She guided him back into her body and he came with a low groan, his release hot and deep. A broken cry escaped her—not triumph, not protest, just raw sensation.

“Yeah, just like that,” he breathed into her hair. “Your body know what it want from your new Black boyfriend, baby.”
