Chapter 2

Reggie Johnson sat in the hard wooden chair, facing the captain’s oak desk—dark, scarred, and thick with the smell of old polish and sweat. Every time Torres shifted in his swivel chair, it let out a low, splintering groan that seemed to eat at the silence. Reggie’s wrists were cuffed behind him, the metal biting each time he breathed. He kept his eyes fixed ahead, listening as Torres’s voice filled the small room like something heavy and slow-moving.

Torres leaned back. The chair protested again. “You know,” he began, voice even, almost conversational, “I don’t have a problem with men like you. Ambition—I respect it.” He paused, letting the words settle. “We’re both men of color trying to make our way. Maybe not so different after all. Race, age… a line on a map. That’s all.” His tone was smooth, but underneath ran something colder—a current waiting to pull you under.

“Selling poison to the children of your decadent country does not trouble me—lost souls who cannot even say whether they are boys or girls. Let the whole nation rot. But you carried Morales product across Lopez territory, and that is a line no man crosses with me,” he went on, the words sharpening as they left his mouth.

“My original plan was to turn you over to Señor Lopez’s men,” Torres said, his voice level. “They would have opened you up right where you stand. No trial. No questions. By sunrise, nothing of you would remain to find.”

He stopped, watching Johnson with a flicker of amusement.

“Then I reconsidered your situation, Señor Johnson. It struck me that a man like you might still have some value.”

Torres let the quiet sit between them, giving the hope of living time to grow.

“Perhaps,” he said, almost genially, “I write in my report that you were carrying only a small amount of marijuana. A foolish error. A modest fine. And with my word that you cooperated fully, you walk out of here.”

Reggie stared at him.

“And Señor Lopez?” Reggie asked.

Torres’s smile thinned.

“Señor Lopez will never know you were here.”

Reggie let out a long breath. It was the first one he’d taken since the cuffs went on.

Torres watched him do it.

“Of course,” Torres said, quiet now, “there is something you must do for me first.”

Reggie sat still, turning the words over. Every door out of this place was closing, one by one. Torres had him in a grip he couldn’t see and couldn’t loosen—a predator playing with food he hadn’t decided how to eat yet.

Then Torres grinned, his crooked teeth showing like a broken fence. He looked Reggie up and down, slow, and stopped at the heavy bulge in the green scrubs—something Torres had noticed early, given how little privacy prisoners got here. Reggie’s dark skin carried tattoos from face to chest to arms, every inch of ink a story of gang loyalty and street violence. His thick braids swung when he moved, framing a face that had grown up hard. Twenty years old. Black. Exactly what Torres needed for the job, and the thought gave him a dark little charge.

“I must confess you have the largest penis I’ve seen come through this facility,” Torres said. “How big do you get when you’re...ah...hard?”

Reggie’s smirk widened, a flash of arrogant pride. “Don't know, never measured it,” he said, his voice thick with defiance. “You some kind of fag, Captain? ‘Cause I don’t do that shit.” He spat the words like they tasted bad.

Torres leaned back, a slow, predatory satisfaction settling over him. The young gringa in the cell—proud, untouched, with that righteous fire in her eyes—was exactly the kind of challenge he savored. Breaking her wouldn’t just be business; it would be pleasure. And using this coarse, tattooed street dealer to do it—a man her type would cross the street to avoid—made the plan feel poetic. He could already picture her husband’s face pressed against the bars, watching as everything he believed in was methodically dismantled.

Torres’s chuckle was a low, unpleasant sound in the small stone room. “No,” he said, his tone flat, the humor gone as quickly as it came. “I assure you, my interests lie elsewhere.” He leaned forward, elbows on the scarred wood, and the gold on his uniform caught the dim light. “But I can make your problems with Señor Lopez disappear. I can make your stay here… comfortable. In exchange, you assist me with a task. One I think you’ll find… agreeable.”

He let the silence stretch, watching Reggie’s face. When he spoke again, his voice was lower, intimate.

“A young man like you must get lonely in a place like this. How would you like company? A young, very pretty woman. American.” A cold smile touched his lips. “She’s in my custody. I have a method for dealing with her type—proud wives who think they’re untouchable. It requires a certain… participation. I believe you are uniquely qualified to provide it.”

Reggie sat up straighter. He had to have misheard. A year, maybe more, since he’d touched a woman—paroled on a technicality just before Torres picked him up. The thought hit him low, his cock stirring against his thigh as he pictured it. “You playin’ with me, man? You want me to help you hook some white girl on your shit and turn her out for you?”

Torres’s mouth curved, something wicked moving behind his eyes.

“I have never been more serious, amigo. A fresh little gringa, clean as Sunday morning, hooked and fucking you—and all of it where her husband can watch.”

He gave a short laugh with nothing in it.

“That,” Torres said, rolling the word around like he was tasting it, “should be well worth your while.”

He leaned in, dropping his voice to a near-whisper.

“And the husband…” He let the word sit there. “Think about it. He’ll be in the cell right next to hers—close enough to watch every minute of what happens to his wife, close enough to hear her, smell the sex on her. And there is nothing—nothing—he can do about any of it.”

Torres's grin widened.

“Don’t see why you’d even pitch me a deal like this,” Reggie snapped, his unease sharpening every word. “Sounds goddamn reckless.”

Torres studied him for a beat, almost amused by the complaint. When he spoke, his tone was ice-cold and self-assured—enough to send a chill racing down Reggie’s spine.

“Reckless? There’s virtually no danger here, amigo. Remember—you’re not in your own backyard. We’re deep in Lopez country, and out here, I call the shots.”

He leaned forward.

“There’ll be no courtroom. No judge. No defense attorney poking around. Soon enough, I’ll hand her husband off to Lopez’s boys. They’ll make him vanish—swiftly, cleanly.”

Torres paused, letting the quiet stretch. Then, low and calm:

“Exactly the fate I almost reserved for you.”

A wicked spark flared in his eyes.

“And the wife…” He curled his lips into a cruel smile. “She’s a brash American who had the gall to sneer at our product—as if she were too good for it.”

His smile went darker.

“I think she needs a chance to rethink her attitude. Once you’re done with her, she’ll be working for the Cartel—and white women like her fetch a high price.”

His grin turned predatory, amusement dancing in his gaze.

“That Lexus SUV gave them away before they ever spoke—money, status, churchgoing respectability. They probably never imagined people like us existed outside their cushioned world.” He chuckled. “They kept insisting they were innocent all the way here. Which, of course, they were. I only arrested them because of how damn beautiful she is. Being that pretty should be illegal.”

Torres shrugged dismissively.

“She’s proud. Conceited. Defiant. She’ll fight tooth and nail.”

He leaned in close, his face a frozen mask.

“But your passage to freedom is… negotiable, amigo. The more you help me crack her—get her hooked on our product, break her spirit, turn her into a puta—the more I’ll sweeten your own release.”

Torres held Reggie’s stare, unblinking.

“I gave that lovely woman who will soon be your girlfriend a very thorough cavity search when I hauled her in. Trust me, you’ll appreciate everything she has to offer.”
