Chapter 3

“Puta Preciosa,” the guard breathed out, a low sound of appraisal as her gaze traveled the length of Kaylah’s body. Kaylah hesitated, then slid her panties down her legs, the last of her clothing pooling at her feet. She didn’t understand the words, only the tone. The guard’s open palm waited. Kaylah dropped her engagement ring into it, then her wedding band. The metal was cool against her skin one last time before it left her fingers colder than the stone beneath her feet.

She was alone now, separated from Steve under the pretense of “processing”—a hollow word that rang like a lie told to soften a blow. The corridor behind her had already taken his voice. Whatever was coming had begun.

The guard—short, heavy-set, with cropped dark hair and eyes that held no softness—paused at the gold cross resting just below Kaylah’s throat. For a long moment she simply stared, as though weighing whether belief itself could be seized. Then her hand shot out. The chain broke with a sharp bite against Kaylah’s skin. The cross disappeared into the guard’s pocket.

“You won’t be needing this no more,” she said, laughing, the Spanish accent thick enough to bend the words into something worse.

Kaylah was walked deeper into the building. The shower was not a shower—a small stone room, a rusted pipe climbing the wall like a dead vein, one corroded head spitting water the color of old blood. The drain was a black hole in the floor, bottomless, as if the building drank whatever it was given.

“Female prisoner must clean self good,” the guard said in broken English.

Kaylah stepped under the cold, thin spray. The water hit her like a verdict. The guard did not look away. She watched with the patience of a woman who had seen this many times and had never grown bored of it, giving quiet orders that left no part of Kaylah untouched, no inch of her alone. The shame came down heavier than the water. Every instruction brought the walls nearer. Every second under that stare made it plainer that being clean was not the only thing this was about.

Somewhere in this building something waited for Kaylah, and it wanted her emptied first.

When the water quit, Kaylah came out of the stone room dripping and smaller than when she had gone in. The guard was already there with what passed for clothes.

A fresh pair of light pink briefs, almost cheerful, cut in a style that suggested someone had pulled them from a drawer where they had no right to be. They covered less than what she was used to, and somehow that left her feeling more exposed than being naked. Green prison scrubs, loose, hanging off her frame like saggy skin that belonged to another person. No bra—that absence unsettled her just as much as the panties. Thin sliders for her feet. Her sundress was gone. Her rings were gone. Her gold cross necklace was gone. Every item that had once declared she was someone with a life beyond these walls had been taken and would not come back.

The pink panties felt like a joke made at her expense. In the gray corridor they looked obscene, a scrap of softness left behind to remind her what softness used to mean.

The truth was a cold stone in her stomach. They were not getting out. They were prisoners in a country that had invented charges for them, their names now property of the men who ran this place.

The guard raised the cuffs that had been taken from Kaylah’s wrists earlier. The metal glinted dully under the weak bulb overhead.

“Turn around, senorita,” the woman said. They knew she was married. Senorita was a choice. A way to peel back the person she’d been until only the raw girl remained. Kaylah knew better than to correct her.

“Do you have to?” Her voice barely reached the guard. “I won’t run.”

The guard’s reply was flat, final.

“No hablar. Do it.”

The cuffs hung behind her. The hall stretched empty. Somewhere beyond it, Steve was waiting too, and Kaylah felt the walls press in like held breath.
