Chapter 1 of 3
My name is Eva, and I’m a shy girl. I graduated from high school this year, and my parents gave me a gift: they signed me up for a summer cheerleader camp. They said it would be good for my self-confidence. Not that they ever cared about what I wanted; I always had to live up to their expectations because they knew better what was best for me, even if I wanted to do something completely different. On the first day of camp, I was assigned to the blue team, where I met Megan. She was a tall, blonde girl full of confidence the kind of girl every guy wanted. “Welcome to the blue team. We won the camp championship last year. So, as captain, it’s my responsibility to make sure that happens again this year.”
I slowly looked up at her and nodded silently. Megan continued, “First, we’re going to assess the new girls’ skills. Your performance today will decide what role we assign you on the team.” After Megan finished her speech, we went to the locker room where we received our uniforms. I’ve never worn a cheerleader uniform at school before—only the popular girls are allowed to join the team. The outfit is a little tight.
Later, we went over to the gym. Megan stood on a chair and continued where she had just left. “We’ll start with twelve laps around the gym, followed by box jumps and balance exercises. Everyone, do your best!” Running wasn’t a problem—we usually ran that much in PE class, too. When we lined up for the box jumps, I was, of course, last in line. As I watched the other girls complete the task with ease, I started to feel more and more confident that I could do it too. When it was my turn, I gathered all my strength and ran toward the box. As I ran, I saw that Megan wasn’t paying any attention to me at all. That shattered the confidence I’d built up, and my hand slipped, causing me to fall during the jump.
I hurt myself, but I wasn’t prepared for what came next. All the girls around me were laughing at me, led by Megan. My stomach clenched, and I started crying. I heard them calling me a crybaby, and that made my tears flow even more. After training, I was still crying when the girls gathered around me. “Don’t cry, baby! We talked it over with the team, and I think we’ve found the perfect role for you,” Megan said with a giggle. I opened my locker to change, but my clothes were gone. I looked at the girls questioningly. “Don’t worry, baby, we took your clothes to your new room. Follow us.”
I followed the girls, still sobbing. The Blue Team was staying in a house with two floors, complete with its own kitchen and bathroom. One of the camp’s mottos was that they taught campers to be independent. So the Blue Team was, you could say, self-sufficient. We walked into a large room with three beds that looked comfortable. When I saw it, I was thrilled. It would be nice to rest after training. Just as I was about to jump into my bed, Megan said, “No, no, little girl, this isn’t your room! We have a special room waiting for you upstairs.”
Megan took my hand, and we went up the stairs. When she opened the door to my room, I couldn’t believe my eyes. It looked like a nursery, only everything was much bigger. There was a changing table, a play corner, and even a crib. I immediately turned around and tried to leave the room, but Megan wouldn’t let me. “What’s wrong, baby? Don’t you like your room?” I shook my head vigorously. “No, no, Megan, I’m not staying in this room! Let me go!”
