Chapter 1 of 20

The Gilded Cage

Elaine Sparrow surveyed the boardroom with the practiced ease of a predator examining its territory. At seventy, her silver hair was coiled in an immaculate chignon, her tailored suit a second skin that radiated authority. The Sparrow Group logo—a stylized bird in mid-flight—gleamed on the polished mahogany table before her. She had built this empire from nothing, clawing her way through male-dominated boardrooms and hostile deals until the world bowed at her feet. Her fingers, adorned with only a single ruby ring, tapped rhythmically against the polished surface as she listened to the quarterly reports, her mind already calculating the next moves in her corporate chess game.

"The Q3 projections are solid," she said, her voice cutting through the sterile air. "But I've heard whispers of discontent."

Her eyes settled on Joshua Robinson, the forty-year-old golden boy whose tech conglomerate had merged with the Sparrow Group eighteen months prior. He was handsome in a generic way—perfect teeth, tailored suit, and an arrogance that barely masked his ambition. Elaine had seen his type before: young, hungry, and foolish enough to mistake her age for weakness. She watched him now as he leaned back in his leather chair, exuding a confidence that bordered on insolence.

"Discontent?" Joshua flashed a disarming smile. "Just exploring all strategic options, Elaine. That's why you brought me on board, isn't it?"

The other board members shifted uncomfortably. Elaine had heard the rumors—Joshua was quietly rallying shareholders, positioning himself as the fresh blood the company needed. He saw her as a relic, a barrier to his ascent. What he didn't understand was that relics like her didn't crumble—they sharpened their edges and prepared to cut.

"How about we continue this discussion at my estate in Upnor this weekend?" Elaine suggested, already knowing his answer. "A more relaxed setting might clear the air."

Joshua's eyes lit with triumph. He thought he was being invited to negotiate her surrender. The foolish man. If only he knew what "clearing the air" truly meant in Elaine's world.

Later that evening, as she prepared for the weekend's events, Elaine stood before the full-length mirror in her private chambers. Her body, though aged, remained firm and disciplined from decades of rigorous exercise and strict self-control. She traced the faint lines around her eyes—lines that told stories of battles won and enemies crushed. At seventy, she had outlived three husbands, buried countless competitors, and built an empire that spanned three continents. Yet here she was, still having to deal with arrogant young pups who thought they could challenge her authority.

Her phone buzzed, and she answered without looking at the caller ID. "Speak."

"It's Victoria," came the crisp voice of her oldest friend and confidante. "The preparations are complete. The kennel master has the hounds ready, and the stables have been alerted. Margaret and Beatrice will arrive tomorrow evening."

"Excellent," Elaine replied, her fingers tightening around the phone. "And our guest?"

"Confirmed. Joshua Robinson accepted your invitation with enthusiasm. He's bringing an overnight bag, as requested. The fool actually thinks he's coming to negotiate your retirement."

Elaine's lips curved into a predatory smile. "Let him think whatever he wishes. It will make the awakening all the more delicious."

"Shall we prepare the usual... accommodations?" Victoria asked, a hint of excitement in her voice.

"Of course," Elaine said. "The east cell, I think. It's coldest this time of year. And have the blacksmith fit him with a size medium collar—nothing too tight, we don't want to damage the merchandise before the hunt."

There was a pause on the other end, then Victoria's low chuckle. "You always did have a flair for the dramatic, Elaine. It's why I love you."

"It's why we're both still relevant, my dear," Elaine replied, ending the call without another word.

She turned back to the mirror, studying her reflection with critical eyes. The weekend ahead would be more than just business—it would be a reminder to all who dared challenge her that age and gender were irrelevant when it came to power. True dominance came from the will to subjugate, the pleasure in breaking others, and the wisdom to know exactly how and when to strike.

Joshua Robinson wanted to play corporate games? Fine. She would teach him that in her world, there were no rules—only predators and prey. And he was about to learn which category he fell into.
