Chapter 7

The bell above the door of the launderette chimed a cheerful note as Amelia Jackson stepped inside. The air was thick with the scent of damp fabric, fabric softener, and the underlying chemical tang of industrial detergents. Rows of machines hummed and chugged in a rhythmic, monotonous symphony. Behind the counter, sorting a basket of clothes, was Mildred Smith. She looked up, her eyes narrowing almost imperceptibly as she took in Amelia's expensive suit and predatory stillness.

"I'm looking for Mildred Smith," Amelia said, her voice cutting through the ambient noise. She didn't bother with a smile.

Mildred's expression flickered, a momentary crack in her composed facade that told Amelia everything she needed to know. Her secret was out. But the shock lasted only a second. A slow, calculating smile spread across Mildred's lips, crinkling the corners of her painted red mouth.

"That's me," she replied, wiping her hands on her faded housecoat. "Business or pleasure?"

"Let's call it a bit of both," Amelia countered smoothly. "I think we have some mutual interests. Specifically, a tall, handsome CEO who likes to visit you occasionally."

Mildred didn't flinch. She simply gestured towards a door marked 'Private'. "Best we discuss this in my office."

Amelia followed her through the door and down the short, dim corridor into the cluttered back room. It was exactly as she imagined: the armchair, the desk. Mildred motioned for Amelia to sit in the worn armchair against the wall. With a delicate, almost disdainful gesture, Amelia brushed a layer of dust from the seat before sitting down, crossing her legs elegantly.

Mildred settled behind her desk, her movements unhurried. She looked at Amelia for a long moment, her eyes sharp and assessing. Then, with a feral grace, she smiled and pressed a small, almost invisible button on the underside of her desk. A loud, heavy THUD echoed through the room as an iron bar shot from a metal housing in the door frame, slamming into a reinforced plate on the door itself. The sound was final, absolute.

Amelia's posture didn't change, but her eyes dilated. This wasn't the expected reaction from a woman backed into a corner.

"Just a precaution, my dear," Mildred said, her voice now stripped of its false cheerfulness. She pulled a packet of Woodbine from her desk drawer, tapped one out, and lit it with a cheap plastic lighter. She took a long, satisfying drag, blowing the acrid smoke directly into the air between them. Amelia coughed once, a sharp, controlled exhalation. She had never been a smoker.

Mildred then produced a surprisingly high-end bottle of Glengoyne scotch and two crystal tumblers. She poured a generous measure of amber liquid into each and slid one across the desk towards Amelia. "Drink?"

Amelia picked up the glass, sniffing the contents. She had gotten the distinct sense that this wasn't going to be as easy as she had thought. "So," she began, taking a small sip. The scotch burned a smooth path down her throat. "Jonathan Clements. I want him. Permanently."

For the next hour, the two women circled each other, a fascinating dance of power, ambition, and mutual respect. They were two sides of the same coin, recognizing in each other a ruthless efficiency that others often missed. Amelia laid out her plan: not just to own Jonathan, but to absorb his company and assets through a carefully constructed legal and financial trap, leaving him a compliant, broken figurehead. It was a plan she had executed before, but never on a scale this grand.

Mildred listened, occasionally interrupting to ask a pointed, insightful question that proved she understood the mechanics of corporate warfare far better than a simple launderette owner should. Eventually, she stubbed out her cigarette and leaned forward.

"Ten thousand pounds," Mildred stated, her voice flat and final. "Cash. Up front. I hand over Jonathan's psychological leash. He's yours."

Amelia arched a perfectly sculpted eyebrow. “Done.”

Mildred put her hand up. “But there's a condition. If your plan succeeds, and you gain control of his assets, Clements Electronics will then purchase my entire chain of laundrettes from me. At fair market price. Think of it as a retirement package."

A genuine smile touched Amelia’s lips. "You drive a hard bargain, Mr. Smith. I accept."

They shook on it, a business transaction sealed between two predators. Mildred pressed the release button. The iron bar retracted with a hydraulic hiss. Just as Amelia reached the door, Mildred's voice stopped her.

"Before you go, a keepsake."

Mildred turned on the computer monitor on her desk. On the screen appeared a crystal-clear recording of Jonathan, naked and collared, whimpering as he knelt before Mildred. The video then cut to a few minutes ago, showing the two of them at the desk, discussing the deal in its entirety, every word captured by the small, hidden camera Mildred had pointed at the armchair.

Mildred smiled at Amelia's stunned face. "Just in case you get any stupid ideas, my love," she said, her voice dripping with venom. "I could ruin a lot of lives with these files. Including Jonathan's."

Amelia stood frozen for a second, watching the recording of her own face, a mask of disbelief. Then, she broke into a slow, admiring smile. She had completely underestimated this seemingly unimpressive woman. She was impressed. Genuinely impressed.

"He's all yours," Mildred said, canceling the video. "Be here tomorrow. With the money."

Amelia nodded once, a gesture of respect between equals, and walked out.
