Chapter Three

The Death Chamber smelled of ozone, cold metal, and the faint residual bleach from the last cycle’s cleanup. Anya Sterling stood in the center of the raised metal stage in her vintage white scrubs, black rubber apron already tied, black gloves snapped tight at the wrists, surgical mask hanging loose around her neck for the moment. The three oversized execution chairs sat in a precise row under the high industrial lights, their heavy frames bolted into the reinforced floor. Around her, two equipment techs were still arguing.

“The standard chair packages were already staged,” one of them said, gesturing at the open crates. “Nobody told us until an hour ago that the board upgraded all three to Impaler protocol.”

Anya’s voice stayed level, but the edge under it was unmistakable. “Then unpack the specialized units, recalibrate the generators, and stop wasting my time. I signed the change order the moment it came through. The protocol is more rigorous. Safety interlocks for staff are non-negotiable—especially since I gave that psychologist special permission to remain inside until arming. You will treat the chamber as live the entire time she is present. Am I clear?”

They muttered assent and moved. Anya turned, tapped her earpiece, and paged the nurse team. Confirmation came back almost immediately: prep room ready, tables set, soft restraints and monitoring leads laid out. She acknowledged, then crossed to the control console and keyed the witness gallery clearance. The outer doors could open; the viewing window itself would stay fully opaque until she ordered otherwise. No one on the other side would see a thing until the moment she chose.

She issued the prep orders next, speaking crisply into the open channel so every nurse on the team heard it once.

“Full colonic enemas on all three. Depilatory treatment neck-down only—the scalp electrode is no longer part of this protocol. Anti-nausea injectables. Amphetamine dose sufficient to keep them conscious and responsive through the entire procedure. Print the leather restraint sets and the heavy bondage Death Hoods—current body scans are already in the queue. Fit the anatomical chastity belts: electrodes over the clitoris, gluteal groups, and bladder musculature. Insert the ultra-conductive copper Pear of Anguish into each with generous lubrication, then pre-lock it to the vaginal shield of the belt while still in its closed, powered-down state. It should not be particularly uncomfortable once seated. Once the belts are locked, fit the special execution diapers rated for total body fluid volume. Unlock the rear ports and screw them directly into the open anal segments of the belts. I want zero leakage path between diaper and hardware.”

She ended the transmission and turned back to the stage. The heavy-duty leather cuffs had to be positioned individually: thigh, waist, abdomen, chest, posture collar at the neck, bicep, and wrist. Ankle stocks with tight rubberized linings waited at the base of each chair; additional straps would lock over the feet on the slightly raised footrests. She moved from chair to chair, adjusting the hardware according to the height and weight data already loaded for each condemned woman. Rolling tray tables stood ready beside each station. She placed a freshly printed Death Hood on each one, the thick leather still warm from the fabricator, interior padding dark and absorbent. Next to every hood sat the matching metallic chastity bra, already printed and waiting, its conductive surfaces dull under the chamber lights.

The metal stage was only two steps high, but the heels of her work shoes made her conscious of every transfer of weight. She stepped up carefully, refusing to give the techs the satisfaction of a stumble.

Generators first. Primary bank, secondary bank, tertiary backup. All green. Ventilation system cycling at the elevated rate required for Impaler procedures—smoke, aerosolized fluids, and the particular chemical tang the cold titanium rods produced when electrified. She logged each check.

Valerie Stone hovered at the edge of the stage, tablet clutched to her chest, eyes bright. The apprentice was competent, eager, and a little too ready to suggest increases in duration or intensity. Anya had noticed it for weeks. She herself felt a deep, private satisfaction in the precision of the devices—the way the hardware fit, the clean geometry of force and current—but she had not yet decided whether Valerie’s open appetite for severity should be sharpened or blunted.

“Valerie. Bolt integrity on all three chairs. Now.”

The younger woman nodded and began checking. Anya watched for half a minute, then pointed at chair two.

“Sit. Generators are offline. Seat shields are closed. Give it a proper test.”

Valerie perched lightly, gave a polite rock of her weight, and started to rise. Anya’s voice cracked across the chamber.

“That is not a test. These chairs will hold women who are dying—convulsing, thrashing, putting every ounce of remaining strength into the restraints. Throw your weight into it. Try to shift the frame. Do it like it matters.”

Color rose in Valerie’s cheeks. She dropped back into the seat and drove her body sideways, forward, back. The chair held, but a faint metallic tick answered from the rear left bolt. Anya was already moving. Together they torqued the fastener until the tick vanished. She made Valerie repeat the full-force test on all three chairs before she was satisfied.

Only then did she begin the technical briefing.

“Current path today is not the simple head-to-ankle circuit. It travels between the ankle electrodes, the chastity belt array, the vaginal pear, the metallic chastity bra, and the impaling pole itself. Everything is sequenced. Everything is logged.”

She stepped to the nearest chair, unlocked the floor hatch, and extended one of the titanium rods from its recessed housing beneath the stage. The metal rose in a perfect vertical line, cold enough that the air around it seemed to tighten. Anya opened the anal seat shield and let the tip catch the light. The point was needle-fine, the taper engineered with obsessive care.

“Each rod is programmed to the individual anatomy. It will pass through the diaper port, the chastity belt port, the anus, the intestinal tract, the stomach, the esophagus, and stop just short of the sinus cavity. While current pulses move through the body, the rod remains ultra-cold. It assists in airway obstruction as the musculature spasms open and closed. The primary cause of death is not asphyxiation and it is not the electrical current. It is exsanguination. These women will remain conscious and active in the restraints for twenty to thirty minutes while they bleed out internally.”

She let the rod retract a few centimeters.

“The pears are already seated and pre-locked in the prep room. Inserted with ample lubrication, closed and powered down, they are not meant to be a source of discomfort beforehand. We are not barbarians. The expansion and conductivity activate only when the sentence is carried out. When fully deployed the pear opens to approximately the diameter of a basketball. While the pole rises, the pears are electrified and opened to provide a counter-anchor that keeps the condemned seated in a way the positioning blocks, leather restraints, and shoulder guards never can. The pole itself tapers from roughly golf-ball girth at the tip to soda-can girth along the main shaft. Microscopic hooks line the surface. They are nearly invisible to the naked eye. When a current pulse hits, the hooks extend and catch tissue. When the pulse drops, they retract. Every cycle creates additional micro-tears. Cumulative blood loss accelerates.”

Anya tapped the edge of her personal tablet where it rested against her hip. “All mechanisms are preprogrammed according to each woman’s biometric profile, but I retain ultimate manual control. Every stage—pole ascent, pear expansion, current sequencing, ventilation adjustments—can be overridden or fine-tuned from this tablet or from the main control station as needed.”

Valerie’s gaze stayed fixed on the hardware, lips slightly parted. Anya watched her for a moment longer, then sealed the seat shield and locked the rod home.

“We do this cleanly,” she said. “We do this exactly. Sentiment is irrelevant. Enthusiasm that compromises precision is a liability. Understood?”

“Yes, Head Nurse.”

Anya pulled the surgical mask up over her nose and mouth, the black rubber apron settling heavily against her legs. The chamber lights hummed. The generators waited. In the prep rooms down the corridor, three women were already being emptied, stripped of every hair from the neck down, injected, fitted with the pre-locked belts, and prepared for the chairs that now stood ready under the cold white lights.

She checked the time.

The four o’clock cycle would begin on schedule
