Chapter Four

The hydraulic sigh was real this time.

Kate’s head snapped toward the door before the sound had fully died. The heavy seal released with a soft hiss of equalizing pressure, and the thick padded panel swung outward. Light from the corridor spilled across the floor of the cell. Lydia stood just outside, tablet held against her chest. Three women in matching Chiron scrubs flanked her—nurses, their expressions carefully neutral, movements economical and practiced.

“It’s time, Kate,” Lydia said. Her voice was the same calm register she had used through every previous visit, but something in it had tightened.

Kate’s legs felt unreliable when she stood. The diaper shifted against the locked belt beneath it; the straitjacket kept her arms useless. Two of the nurses stepped in without hurry and guided her by the upper arms. Their hands were firm, not rough. They turned her toward the open doorway where a low, heavy restraint wheelchair waited, its padded straps already open.

The third nurse spoke quietly as they settled her into the seat. “We’re going to the medical prep room now. Everything is on schedule.”

The wheelchair’s restraints closed over her thighs, across her midsection, and around the straitjacket itself. One nurse checked each buckle with practiced fingers. Then the chair began to move.

The corridor beyond the Death Row cells was longer than Kate had imagined. Red emergency lighting ran in a continuous strip along the ceiling, casting everything in a low, bloody wash. The walls here were not padded; they were smooth, institutional, and endless. Each meter forward seemed to stretch the distance rather than shorten it. Fear rose in her throat in thick, irregular waves. She tried to keep her eyes forward and failed. Every red-tinged doorway, every sealed panel, every distant mechanical sound fed the certainty that she was being taken somewhere from which no one returned upright.

Lydia walked on her right, close enough that Kate could hear the soft scuff of her shoes. The psychologist did not speak, but her presence was deliberate.

The medical prep wing was larger than Kate had expected. Several individual chambers opened off a central corridor, each sealed by its own sliding panel and privacy curtain. Hers was only one of them. The room they guided her into was brighter, colder, and smelled of antiseptic and warm plastic. A single gynecological examination table dominated the center, stirrups already adjusted, soft restraints dangling from the sides and foot of the frame. The nurses transferred her with the same steady efficiency they had shown in the cell. The straitjacket was unlocked and removed. For a brief moment her arms were free; then new straps secured her wrists, ankles, and torso to the table. A wide belt crossed her hips. The curtain around the table was drawn with a soft metallic whisper.

The sheer number of restraints, the careful way they handled her, the constant checks and locked hardware—it all made her feel like something dangerous. A feral animal that might lash out if given the slightest chance. Not a woman who, only weeks ago, had been a boring housewife folding laundry and arguing about grocery lists. The disconnect sat heavy in her chest.

Beyond the fabric—and through the shared walls of the neighboring chambers—she could hear other sounds: low weeping, the quiet murmur of another nurse’s voice, the occasional sharp intake of breath that was not her own. The other two condemned were already here, or nearly so. The knowledge made the space feel smaller.

One of the nurses rested a gloved hand lightly on Kate’s shoulder. “We’re going to take care of the preparation now. We’ve done this many times. When the team follows protocol, there is no unnecessary pain. That only happens when someone rushes or makes a mistake. We don’t rush.”

Lydia moved into her line of sight, staying near the head of the table. “I’m right here,” she said. “You can talk if you need to. Or not. Both are allowed.”

The first thing they did was remove the wet diaper. The soft, heavy weight of it peeled away from her skin, the warm dampness suddenly exposed to the cool air of the room. Kate’s face burned. She turned her head toward the wall, eyes stinging, the humiliation sharp enough to cut through the fear for a moment. One of the nurses spoke quietly while they cleaned her.

“It’s all right. This happens with almost everyone by this stage. Nothing to be embarrassed about. We’re used to it.”

The reassurance was professional and almost gentle, but it did not erase the heat in her cheeks.

The process that followed remained methodical and deeply exposing. Kate kept her eyes on the ceiling tiles whenever she could, but the physical sensations and the quiet competence of the nurses made looking away only partially effective. The full colonic enema was administered with clinical care; the anti-nausea injection followed, then the amphetamine dose that sharpened the edges of everything. The depilatory cream was applied neck-down in long, even strokes, left to work, then wiped away until her skin felt unnaturally smooth and exposed.

When they brought the preprinted metallic chastity bra to her chest, one of the nurses made a frustrated sound under her breath.

“It’s not seating. She’s lost weight since the scan.”

Another nurse was already drawing up syringes. “Saline. We’ll bring the volume up.”

Kate felt the cold prick of the needles, the slow pressure as saline was injected into each breast. Vacuum cups followed, sealing with a soft hiss and beginning a steady rhythmic pull. The sensation was strange and invasive—her already modest breasts drawn outward and upward until the flesh filled the heavy conductive cups of the bra. The nurses adjusted, checked the fit, and finally locked the bra into place with a series of quiet mechanical clicks. The metal sat cold and unyielding against her skin.

They moved lower. Fresh syringes appeared. One of the nurses explained in a quiet, almost apologetic voice as she worked.

“We’re going to inject a small amount of saline into the vulva, labia, clitoris, clitoral hood and root, and the anus before we use the pumps. It helps the tissue seat properly against the electrodes. If the procedure doesn’t go forward for any reason, the saline will leave the body on its own and the swelling will go down within a few hours. Completely safe.”

The tone was sympathetic, careful—yet Kate could hear the unspoken assessment underneath it. They did not expect the procedure to be canceled. The needles were quick and precise. Cool pressure bloomed under the skin of each named place. Vacuum cups followed immediately, sealing with soft hisses and beginning their measured rhythmic pull. The pumps drew blood and fluid into the already-injected tissues until everything felt swollen, tight, and hypersensitive. Only when the nurses were satisfied that the flesh was engorged enough to properly seat the electrode nodules did they proceed.

The anatomical chastity belt came next. A thick layer of cold electro-conductive gel was spread along every contact surface. The chill made Kate flinch. Then the copper pear was brought into view—small in its collapsed state, gleaming under the lights. One nurse coated it thoroughly with lubricant.

Kate’s voice came out thin. “What is that? Why—?”

“It’s part of the belt assembly,” the nurse answered quietly. “It stays closed and powered down until the chamber. It’s not meant to hurt you now.”

The insertion was slow. The lubricated metal pressed inward, stretching her just enough to be unmistakable, then settled deeper until the tip came to rest firmly against her cervix—as if it were only waiting for the command to push further into her womb. The last thing that had ever been inside that space was her daughter. The thought landed hard and cold. At the entrance itself the stem of the pear was actually quite slender, the base narrow enough that it sat without much additional discomfort once the initial stretch had passed. The device locked into the vaginal shield of the belt with a soft, final click. In its closed state the pear was only a firm, unfamiliar presence—uncomfortable in its foreignness rather than truly painful. The belt itself closed around her hips. A circle of small electrode nodules tightened into place around her engorged clitoris; another ring sealed against the swollen tissue of her anus. The cold gel and the precise pressure combined into a sudden, involuntary pulse of arousal that made her hips try to shift against the restraints. Shame flooded her face. The nurses did not comment.

The special execution diaper was fastened over everything, its rear port aligned and screwed into the open anal segment of the belt until the connection was seamless. Every strap was checked. Every connection verified.

Lydia never left the head of the table. When Kate’s breathing turned sharp and irregular, the psychologist simply rested two fingers against the back of her hand and kept them there. The nurses continued their work without comment on the tears that tracked into Kate’s hairline. They had seen this too many times for surprise, yet something in their manner remained carefully gentle, as if the professionalism itself were a form of mercy.

When the final check was complete, one of the nurses looked toward Lydia and gave a small nod.

“Prep complete,” she said. “She’s ready for transfer to the chamber when you are.”

Kate stared at the ceiling. Beyond the curtain—and from the other chambers along the wing—the soft weeping continued. The red-lit hallway waited somewhere behind the sealed door. The amphetamine kept her heart knocking hard against her ribs, denying her even the small mercy of drifting. The pear sat quietly inside her, its tip pressed against the entrance to her womb. The electrode nodules remained a constant, low pressure against the most sensitive places. The cold gel had begun to warm against her skin.

Lydia’s fingers remained lightly against her hand.

“I’m still here,” the psychologist said quietly. “We go together as far as I’m allowed.”
