Last Mistake

Chapter Ten

An amber warning flared on the primary console.

Anya’s head snapped toward the readout. One of the deep-body sensors on the center chair—Kate’s—was reporting a possible misalignment of the titanium rod relative to the esophageal axis. Protocol left no room for interpretation. She crossed the stage in four long strides, black apron snapping against her legs.

“Hold pattern on chair two,” she ordered. Valerie acknowledged and locked the other two systems in stasis.

Anya unsnapped the oral shield of Kate’s faceplate with practiced speed. The inflatable plug deflated in a single hiss and was withdrawn in a slick, bloody rush. Kate’s mouth sagged open. A flashlight beam cut into the dark red cavity. Anya leaned in, ignoring the delirious, garbled sounds that spilled out—half-formed pleas, wet choking attempts to swallow or force the obstruction upward. Bloody drool ran in thin strings down the leather of the hood and onto the posture collar. The trachea was visibly compressed around the shaft; each failed swallow only tightened the spasm.

The beam found the tip exactly where the biometric program had placed it: centered, stable, a fraction short of the sinus floor. No correction required.

Anya allowed herself one controlled breath.

She turned her head just enough for the gallery microphones to catch her voice. “Apologies for the brief interruption. Sensor anomaly resolved. Alignment is correct. We continue.”

Then, lower, only for the woman in the chair: “I’m sorry.”

The plug was reseated, reinflated, and the oral shield locked back into place. Anya was already moving toward the control panel. In compensation for the delay she overrode the standard sequence and entered a manual pattern—sharper peaks, tighter intervals, higher localized amperage across the pelvic and thoracic nodes.

Inside the hood Kate could not tell whether the pause had been real or another hallucination born of overload. Every second remained pure devastation. Her body continued to writhe in small, futile convulsions around the immovable column that occupied her from anus to throat. Then the mouth was sealed again and the new current hit.

It arrived first as a vicious, focused assault on the electrode ring around her clitoris and the conductive surfaces of the metallic bra. The sensation detonated outward. Her ruined vagina clenched hard around the fully bloomed pear in a series of violent, involuntary spasms. Orgasm tore through her with no pleasure left in it—only a searing, full-body seizure that forced a fresh scream into the sealed plug. Before the aftershocks could fade the original full-path current slammed back online. Her muscles locked and released in rapid, arrhythmic waves, driving her against the restraints in the grotesque, continuous motion the machine demanded.

In the gallery Kalani watched the entire alignment check in open horror. When the faceplate opened she saw the flashlight beam glint wetly off metal at the very back of her mother’s throat. The reflective flash was small and unmistakable. Kalani’s own throat closed in pure sympathetic reflex; she swallowed hard, once, then again. Around her several other witnesses made the same unconscious gesture, hands rising to their necks before they realized what they were doing. Karen’s fingers remained locked around hers.

The current did not relent.

Kate felt the pooled blood and urine in the diaper begin to heat, then boil against her shredded crotch and the stretched tissues around the pear. Her belly, forced outward by the expanded copper device and the rigid pole, pulsed visibly with each surge of electricity, as if something alive and wrong were trying to force its way out. Every major muscle group screamed. Somewhere in the chaos of sensation she felt the sharp, grinding give of ribs fracturing under the restraints and a deeper, sickening crack through the pelvic girdle as the thrashing continued.

Time lost meaning. The overhead monitors tracked heart rates as they climbed, plateaued, and began their final, irregular declines. Fifteen minutes. Eighteen. Twenty.

One by one the traces flatlined.

Anya waited the required confirmatory interval, then stepped forward, professionalism fully restored.

“Time of death for all three subjects confirmed. Sentence complete.”

She unlocked the gallery doors with a single command and initiated pole retraction. The titanium rods withdrew with slow, wet, sucking sounds that carried clearly through the chamber speakers. Several witnesses had already used the emesis bags under their seats; the sharp smell of vomit mixed with the heavier scents of blood, scorched fluid, and ozone.

Kalani wanted to leave. Every instinct told her to stand and walk out before anything else happened. Instead she remained seated, eyes fixed on the center chair, while the nurses began the unstrapping sequence. When the faceplate and hood were finally removed, her mother’s face was revealed—swollen, mottled, streaked with blood and mucus, the mouth still shaped around the memory of the plug. The expression was no longer human in any way Kalani could recognize.

She watched them transfer the body to the waiting gurney for autopsy and subsequent cremation. Somewhere in the administrative offices a form would be generated asking her to select an urn.

Karen stayed beside her until the stage was cleared and the lights began to dim. Only then did Kalani allow herself to be guided toward the exit, the image of the open throat and the glint of metal still burning behind her eyes.
